Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound diagnostic is a tool that allows to successfully solve problems of not only early sex differentiation but also ongoing monitoring of gonadogenesis process or retrospective analysis, performed in accordance with the results of the bonitation. The materials introduced in this book are the result of many years of research and practical work on identification of sex and sturgeon maturity stages performed by the authors on sturgeon farms in Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan Azerbaidzhan and other CIS countries using different methods. The guide provides basic principles of ultrasound diagnostic and recommendations for the sturgeon ultrasound diagnostic equipment and workplace arrangements. There is a detailed description of ultrasound diagnostic procedure for identification of sex and maturity stage of sturgeon gonads. There is also a detailed instruction on ultrasound images analysis and description of specific diagnostic features. Annual sexual cycles with various inter-spawn intervals were for the first time analysed specifying the duration of each maturity stage in heat-reserve units. The principles of controlling linear and generative growth of sturgeons contained in replacement and breeding stocks of sturgeon farms had been defined. The Atlas contains more than a hundred illustrations, provided with detailed descriptions and notes which allow even a novice fish farmer to independently learn ultrasound diagnostic of sex and maturity stage of sturgeon gonads. The book is addressed to specialists and chief managers of sturgeon farms, the farmers involved in sturgeon breeding, scientists and students.

Book excerpt: The second edition of the manual on ultrasound diagnostics of the sturgeon reproductive system contains several significant additions based both on the appearance of new equipment for ultrasound diagnostics and on the results of recent studies of the authors. The new edition describes in detail the features of various types of ultrasonic sensors, including previously not used for sturgeon diagnostics. At the request of readers of the first edition, the features of the analysis of echograms obtained using a convex sensor are considered. The section describing the diagnosis of pathologies of the reproductive system of fish, including hermaphroditism, has been substantially expanded. The guide provides basic principles of ultrasound diagnostic and recommendations for the sturgeon ultrasound diagnostic equipment and workplace arrangements. There is a detailed description of ultrasound diagnostic procedure for identification of sex and maturity stage of sturgeon gonads. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Siberian sturgeon, Acipenser baerii Brandt 1869 is the most widely farmed sturgeon species. Continuing from Volume 1, which focuses on the biology of the species, the present Volume 2 in turn examines farming aspects. It is divided into six parts, the first of which deals with reproduction and early ontogenesis, i.e. reproductive cycles, controlled reproduction, sperm cryoconservation, and weaning of larvae. The second covers the growing phase with a focus on food and feeding (management, fish meal replacement, potential endocrine disruptions, usefulness of prebiotics and immunostimulants, and nitrogen excretion). Production-related data are the focus of the third part and include: characteristics (countries, structures of production, evolution in production, economic features) of the gross production of the species (meat and caviar) worldwide, a method for assessing the quality of caviars, off-flavors management, and an example of production of fingerlings for restocking. Part four addresses selected long-term management issues: genetic variability of brood stocks, genome manipulation and sex control, and the advantages of hybrids. The next three chapters constitute the fifth part, which is devoted to health status (immunology and welfare). In closing, the absence of ecological risks of introducing the species in non-native waters is shown using two long-term documented examples (Russia and France). Three methodological chapters round out the volume, covering: in vitro incubation of ovarian follicles, a richly illustrated library of echographies and photos, and a detailed presentation of oxygen demand studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Healthy sturgeon" - a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of sturgeon diseases in aquaculture. How did the idea of this book come about? Full-cycle breeding of sturgeon in fresh water is a relatively young direction of aquaculture, compared, for example, with the cultivation in artificial conditions of species such as carp or trout. The main incentive for the rapid large-scale development of sturgeon breeding was a catastrophic reduction in the number of sturgeons in nature and the introduction, in this regard, of a ban on their fishing. Within a short time, thousands of fish farms appeared around the world, some of which were previously cultivated by other species, while others were built specifically for sturgeon. The available knowledge about sturgeons characterized them as very resistant to various fish diseases. However, in practice, fish farmers from both old and newly created farms are faced with the fact that under artificial conditions all groups of sturgeon (from young to mature fish) are significantly susceptible to various diseases. There were frequent cases when in certain periods the death of sturgeon juveniles reached 90%. One of the main reasons for this is that radical changes in lifestyle, expressed in the exclusion of the sea period and constant keeping in fresh water, have had a negative impact on sturgeon resistance to diseases that have not previously been noted at these fish. This is especially true for bacterial diseases that cause the most damage on sturgeon farms. Many fish farmers were not ready for this. As practice shows, if fishery specialists had taken timely measures to identify diseases in the initial stages, then, in most cases, it would be possible to prevent the mass death of fish and avoid serious losses. Therefore, working on this book, we have tried to fully help fish farmers in solving the main problems: timely diagnosis of diseases, the choice of emergency measures to prevent the development and further spread of the disease and, most importantly, the creation of conditions that prevent the emergence of diseases of fish on the sturgeon farm. The diagnostic and laboratory research methods described in this manual are focused specifically on the capabilities of fisheries laboratories, which are equipped mainly with optical equipment and rapid analysis tools. A detailed description of the external manifestations and clinical signs that in a fish farm will help to establish the onset of the disease in a timely manner was a priority task that the authors of this book tried to solve. For a better perception, all the diseases described in the book are illustrated by a large number (more than two hundred) of original photographs, diagrams and drawings. For ease of use of the book, the materials are grouped into three sections: The first section is devoted to general information about diseases, the principles of their diagnosis and ichthyopathological examination. Also, the section provides information about the features of the anatomy of sturgeon, in relation to the issues of ichthyopathology. The second section contains descriptions of infectious and non-infectious diseases of sturgeon, indicating the causes of their occurrence, risk factors and methods of treatment. The third section describes the general principles and methods of treatment of fish, the characteristics of some of the most commonly used drugs. The materials of the manual are adapted for a wide range of readers, including those studying fish farming and fish diseases on their own. The most important are: to produce monosex stocks to rear only the fastest-growing sex in some species, to prevent precocious or uncontrolled reproduction in other species and to aid in broodstock management. The application of sex ratio manipulation for population control and invasive species management is also included. Next, this book provides detailed and updated information on the underlying genetic, epigenetic, endocrine and environmental mechanisms responsible for the establishment of the sexes, and explains chromosome set manipulation techniques, hybridization and the latest gene knockout approaches. Furthermore, the book offers detailed protocols and key summarizing information on how sex control is practiced worldwide in 35 major aquaculture species or groups, including fish and crustaceans, and puts the focus on its application in the aquaculture industry. With contributions from an international panel of leading scientists, Sex Control in Aquaculture will appeal to a large audience: aquaculture/fisheries professionals and students, scientists or biologists working with basic aspects of fish/shrimp biology, growth and reproductive endocrinology, genetics, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and R&D managers and administrators. This text explores sex control technologies and monosex production of commercially-farmed fish and crustacean species that are highly in demand for aquaculture, to improve feed utilization efficiency, reduce energy consumption for reproduction and eliminate a series of problems caused by mixed sex rearing. Thus, this book: Contains contributions from an international panel of leading scientists and professionals in the field Provides comprehensive coverage of both established and new technologies to control sex ratios that are becoming more necessary to increase productivity in aquaculture Includes detailed coverage of the most effective sex control techniques used in the world's most important commercially-farmed species Sex Control in Aquaculture is the comprehensive resource for understanding the biological rationale, scientific principles and real-world practices in this exciting and expanding field.

Book excerpt: Exciting new developments and applications of imaging techniques have emerged over the last few years, leading to many improvements in diagnosis and staging of urologic diseases. Refinements in the technology mean that imaging now is much more precise than even five years ago, and this has significantly enhanced its application within several key fields. As such, there are virtually no books currently available that cover the impact of these advances within urology leaving a major hole in the market. With its sound overview of the current state of affairs, and also its focus on highlighting future advances, this book would therefore find a significant audience within not only trainees, but also practicing clinicians too. Furthermore, the whole topic of ultrasonography is a relatively overlooked one, with very few modern books tackling any specific areas of the field. This book will be up-to-date and will pay attention to the unique applications of ultrasound within each discipline.
