Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging, held in Key Biscayne, Miami, Florida May 29th to June 2nd, 1978. The title of the Symposium was changed again this year by dropping the word "Holography" to reflect the further emphasis on the general imaging aspects of the Symposium and the de-emphasis on the Holographic aspects. Because of this continued changing nature of the Symposium Series this volume has undergone the title change from ACOUSTICAL HOLOGRAPHY to ACOUSTICAL IMAGING. The 47 papers presented here illustrate the continued growth in this dynamic field. There has been a large emphasis on Array Technology as well as Underwater Applications, Seismic Applications, Transducers, New Methods, Acoustic Microscopy, Non-destructive Testing, Computer Tomography Techniques, Medical Applications as well as Tissue Characterization. The meeting was a great success and a stimulating experience for all concerned due principally to the enthusiasm and contrib utions of all of the authors represented here. The editor wishes to extend his appreciation and thanks to each and everyone of them. Book excerpt: The origin ofthe International Acoustical Imaging Symposium series can be traced to 1967, when a meeting on acoustical holography was held in C alifornia. In those days, acoustical holography was at the leading edge of research but, as the importance of this subject waned, so the title of the series was changed from Acoustical Holography to Acoustical Imaging in 1978. The early Symposia were held at various venues in the United States. In 1980. the series became international, with the Symposium that year taking place in Cannes in France. The pattern now is to try to met alternately in the USA and in another part of the world so that active researchers everywhere can conveniently attend at a reasonably high frequency. It was a great privilege for us in Bristol in the United Kingdom to be chosen to host the 25th Symposium, which convened on 19 March 2000 and spread over four days. We were blessed not only by good weather, but also by the attendance ofnearly 100 pa rticipants who came from 17 c ountries. A large number of papers were accepted for presentation, either orally or as posters. Whether an oral presentation or a poster, all were considered to have equal merit, and no distinction is made between them in the published proceedings. There were no parallel sessions, so every participant could attend every presentation. The re sultant disciplinary cross fertilisation maintained the t radition of past Symposia.

This traditional scientific event is recognized as a premier forum for the presentation of advanced research results in both theoretical and experimental development. The lAIS was conceived at a 1967Acoustical Holography meeting in the USA. Since then, these traditional symposia provide an opportunity for specialists who are working in this area to make new acquaintances, renew old friendships and present recent results of their research. Our Symposium has grown significantly in size due to a broad interest in various topics and to the quality of the presentations. For the firsttime in 40 years, the IAIS was held in the province of Ontario in Windsor, Canada's Automotive Capital and City of Roses. The 26th IAIS attracted over 100specialists from 13countries representing this interdisciplinary field in physical acoustics, image processing, applied mathematics, solid-state physics, biology and medicine, industrial applications and quality control technologies. The 26th lAIS was organized in the traditional way with only one addition-a Special Session "History of Acoustical Imaging" with the involvement of such well known scientists as Andrew Briggs, Noriyoshi Chubachi, Robert Green Jr., Joie Jones, Kenneth Erikson, and Bernhard Tittmann. Many of these speakers are well known scientists in their fields and we would like to thank them for making this session extremely successful.

Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor considerably enhanced the informal sessions, which frequently became as spirited as one might expect in a new field. Dr. H. M. A. El-Sum, a consultant to the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories and a pioneer in the field of holography, set the stage with the first paper. He provided a general introduction to the physical principles and practical methods involved in optical and acoustical holography. His paper also included a summary of various specific techniques currently used in sound holography, with the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations involved for each approach.

Book excerpt: The latest progress in acoustical holography and related research areas, generally involving imaging by means of acoustic waves, was discussed and treated in depth at the Fourth International Symposium on Acoustical Holography, held in Santa Barbara, California on April 10-12, 1972. This volume contains the proceedings of that symposium. As the papers presented here indicate, a num ber of startling advances have been realized in the state-of-the-art since publication of Volume 3 of Acoustical Holography. Progress has been partic ularly impressive in the field of acoustical imag ing. The Fourth International Symposium represents something of alandmark conference in this respect. The scope of this volume is substantially broad er than the term "acoustical holography' usually implies and encompasses the whole area of visualiza tion, detection, and recording of sound fields whether with long wavelengths, microwaves, or with extrememly short sound wavelengths. The 37 sympo sium papers appear here each as aseparate chapter. In general, the work reported deals mainly with ex perimental and theoretical developments in the a bove areas. This work has significant practical potential use in terms of seismic sensing, under water imaging, non-destructive testing, real-time acoustic microscopy, and medical diagnosis.
