Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focused on the use of sonication to destroy surfactants and surface tension properties in industrial wastewaters that affect traditional water treatment processes. We have investigated the sonochemical destruction of surfactants and a chelating agent to understand the release of metals from surfactants during sonication. In addition, the effects of physical properties of surfactants and the effect of ultrasonic frequency were investigated to gain an understanding of the factors affecting degradation. Successful partial or total destruction of surfactants resulting in the release of metals bound to surfactants may result in a significant cost savings of treatment plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study systematically studied the effects of pulsed ultrasound on the accumulation of surfactants at cavitation bubble interfaces and their subsequent degradation. First, the application of pulsed ultrasound for the degradation of the nonvolatile surfactants sodium 4-octylbenzene sulfonate (OBS) and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) was investigated at a frequency of 354 kHz. Observed pulse enhancements were dependent on the pulse length, pulse ratio, initial concentration and surface activity of the surfactants. The enhanced degradation of surfactants by pulsed ultrasound was attributed to the accumulation of surfactants on cavitation bubble surfaces. Second, the degradation of OBS and DBS, and a non-volatile non-surfactant 4-ethylbenzene sulfonic acid (EBS), as binary mixtures were studied. Results indicate that the surfactant is selectively degraded. In OBS and DBS surfactant mixtures sonicated under pulsed ultrasound, surfactants strongly affected each other's degradation rates due to competition for the reaction sites on the cavitation bubble surfaces. Third, the degradation of OBS was investigated at various frequencies under CW and pulsed ultrasound. Degradation rates were strongly dependent on the frequency and sonication mode (i.e., CW or pulsing). Results indicate that frequency and sonication mode play a combined role in the degradation of surfactants due to changes in both chemical activity (i.e., ·OH radical yield) and accumulation of surfactants on bubble surfaces. Finally, sonolysis of argon-saturated aqueous solutions of the non-volatile surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium 1-pentanesulfonate (SPSo) was investigated at three ultrasonic frequencies under both CW and pulsed ultrasound. Results indicate that the -·CH- radical yield following sonolysis of surfactants is dependent on their ability to adsorb to cavitation bubble surfaces, and pulsing the ultrasonic wave has a significant effect on adsorption and the resulting radical yield.
