Book excerpt: A 11.6 km (7.2 mi.) portion of IA 21 in Iowa County from the junction of US 6 north to the junction of IA 212, was selected for the research project. The project was divided into 65 different test sections of a PCC overlay of an existing asphalt concrete (AC) surface with thicknesses of 50 mm (2 in.), 100 mm (4 in.), 150 mm (6 in.), and 200 mm (8 in.). The joint spacings for these sections were 0.6 m (2 ft.), 1.2 m (4 ft.), 1.8 m (6 ft.), 3.7 m (12 ft.), and 4.6 m (15 ft.). Joints were sealed if the thickness of the pavement was over 100 mm (4 in.), unless specified. Two types of polypropylene fibers, monofilament and fibrillated, were added to the conventional PCC mix for designated sections. Three additional sections consisted of an asphalt overlay for comparison with the concrete overlay. Three different base preparations were used on the project, consisting of: patching and scarifying, patching only, and cold-in-place recycling. Sensors were placed in various test sections to measure the temperature and strain during and after construction of the overlay. Pullout tests were also conducted at various locations. Beams cylinders were made for each of the PCC mixes and tested for flexural and compressive strengths. Evaluation of the performance will be conducted through December 31, 1999.

Book excerpt: This report presents the latest information on the design, construction and performance of portland cement concrete (PCC) overlays. It describes the four types of PCC overlays that are commonly used in highway pavement applications: bonded PCC overlays, unbonded PCC overlays, conventional whitetopping and ultra-thin whitetopping. Recommended applications, critical design elements, current overlay design methodologies, recommended construction practices, and performance highlights are described for each overlay type. Information is also provided on the selection of PCC overlays as possible rehabilitation alternatives for existing pavements. Taken together, this document addresses the current "state of the technology" of PCC overlays placed on both existing PCC pavements and on existing hot-mix asphalt pavements.

It combined the variables of base preparation, overlay thickness, slab size, and fiber enhancement into a series of test sections over a 7.2-mile length. This report identifies the performance of the overlays in terms of deflection reduction, reduced cracking, and improved bonding between the portland cement concrete (PCC) and asphalt cement concrete (ACC) base layers. The original research project was designed to evaluate the variables over a 5-year period of time. A second project provided the opportunity to test overlay rehabilitation techniques and continue measurement of the original overlay performance for 5 additional years.

Book excerpt: The objective of the research was to compare the performance of fiber reinforced and plain Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) overlay when used as a thin non-dowelled overlay on top of a rubblized, distressed concrete pavement. The experiment was conducted at the Accelerated Testing Laboratory at Kansas State University, and consisted of constructing two pavements and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated pavement test. The pavements were constructed in the environmental pit so that heat-cool temperature cycles were imposed. The two pavements were subjected to 500,000 full-truck axle passes. Stresses and strains at several locations in the two pavements, as well as the expansion/contraction of the slabs, were periodically recorded during the test. The stress-strain data, as well as the location, severity and extent of the cracking in the overlay, clearly indicate that there is no benefit of including the plastic fibers in the concrete overlay. The full-scale accelerated test revealed that the thin non-dowelled overlays are effective when used on top of distressed, rubblized concrete pavements.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to investigate the interface bonding condition between an ultra-thin PCC overlay and an ACC base over time, considering the previously mentioned variables. This research lasted for five years, at which time it was extended an additional five years. The new phase of the project was initiated by removing cracked panels existing in the 2-inch thick PCC sections and replacing them with three inches of PCC. The project extension (TR 432) will provide an increased understanding of slab bonding conditions over a longer period, as well as knowledge regarding the behavior of the newly rehabilitated areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cities in Iowa have retained the original brick street surfaces in downtown areas and in older residential areas as the base for modern driving surfaces. The original brick surfaces were not built to handle current and future traffic loadings. In recent years, these surfaces have tended to shift and become uneven, creating problems with safety. Asphaltic concrete overlays have been the typical rehabilitation technique in these situations. This has proven to be successful rehabilitation technique in some cases; in other cases, the combination of movement of the brick and flexibility of the asphalt has proven to accentuate the original problems. Most of the existing literature on rehabilitation of brick streets shows the use of asphaltic concrete. Other rehabilitation methods include reconstruction of the brick surface and strengthening of the surface by placing asphaltic concrete or portland cement concrete, along with sand, underneath the brick layers. To date, little if anything has been done in the area of using portland cement concrete as an overlay of the brick surfaces. This final report documents the planning, construction, and performance of unbonded ultrathin whitetopping rehabilitation of a brick street in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 2001. It also reports on a similar project in Des Moines that was constructed two years later in 2003.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A suburban city street in Kansas was rehabilitated with a 50 mm (2 in.) Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) thin overlay, commonly known as ultra-thin whitetopping (UTW). The construction and performance of this UTW project have been described in this report. The project, constructed in the Spring of 1995, incorporated the following design features: 0.9 m x 0.9 m (3 ft x 3 ft) panels versus 1.2 m x 1.2 m (4 ft x 4 ft) panels, plain versus fiber reinforced concrete, and sealed versus unsealed joints. The project has performed fairly well to date although some test sections needed periodic maintenance and all of the test sections except two have been overlaid as of October 2001. Experience on this project shows that the UTW overlay can be easily built with conventional equipment and locally available materials. UTW also permits a skid-resistant finish to be applied. Excellent smoothness can also be obtained although the slab thickness is very small. Corner cracking appears to be the most dominant distress type, though it was observed that bond existed between the concrete and the asphalt layers even for the cracked panels. The bond appeared to degrade with time. Joint spacing has a significant effect on performance. The sections with smaller joint spacing appeared to perform better. The performance of the sections with fibers in concrete was inconclusive. Also, joint sealing did not appear to affect the performance.

Book excerpt: Laboratory testing and full-scale field testing were used to accomplish the research objective. Laboratory testing involved monitoring interface strains in fabricated PCC/ACC composite beams subjected to either static or dynamic flexural loading. Variables investigated included ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, and synthetic fiber reinforcement usage. Field testing involved monitoring interface strains and temperatures, falling weight deflectometer deflection responses, direct shear strengths, and distresses on a 7.2 mile Iowa Department of Transportation UTW project (HR-559). Variables investigated included ACC surface preparation, PCC thickness, synthetic fiber reinforcement usage, and joint spacing. The results of both laboratory and field testing are presented and summarized in this paper.

This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-Thin Whitetopping (UTW) is a pavement rehabilitation technique that involves the placement of a thin Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) overlay, 2 inches (50 mm) to 4 inches (100 mm) thick, over a distressed Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement. Typically, the HMA pavement is milled and cleaned which helps to create a bond between the existing HMA pavement and the PCC overlay. The bond between the two layers promotes composite action of the pavement section and as a result has a direct impact on the performance of the UTW Pavement. This composite action allows for the reduced thickness in the UTW layer. Additionally, a short joint spacing is typically used, which reduces the UTW flexural and curling stresses. In this study three different test areas were constructed in the INDOT/Purdue University Accelerated Pavement Testing facility. Each test area had different lanes that varied by concrete mix design, bonding preparation, and pavement crosssection. These sections were subjected to 300,000 to 560,000 load applications. An additional test area was constructed outside the facility to evaluate pavement thicknesses and environmental effects. The project resulted in a modified UTW design methodology that takes into account the stiffness of all underlying pavement layers. Additionally, the project provides insight into the effects of pavement section, UTW mix design, mechanical loading, bond conditions, and environmental loading on the performance of UTW.
