Book excerpt: Carey presents an introduction to the elements of apocalyptic discourse in the Hebrew Bible, the intertestamental texts of the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, and the Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts. He seeks to help modern readers perplexed by the rampant and somewhat outrageous depiction and interpretation of apocalyptic literature to see apocalyptic discourse as a flexible set of resources that early Jews and Christians could employ for a variety of persuasive tasks. Carey examines each of the literary works that exhibit apocalyptic discourse. He briefly introduces the date and language of each text and shows its basic contents. Then he examines the particular topics and purposes of the work. Carey concludes by showing a way to read the particular example of apocalyptic discourse as a whole in its own setting with its own purposes. Carey invokes discourse as a category of study in an attempt to bring together the literary, ideological, and social dimensions of apocalyptic language. He sees the genius of apocalyptic discourse in its ability to bring its audience into otherwise inaccessible mysteries concerning the future and the heavenly realms. As theology, apocalyptic discourse engages life's greatest questions-the nature of God, the desire for justice, and the frustrations of human finitude. As poetry, it expresses the theological imagination in vivid symbols and conventional literary forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carl Braaten has written an interesting book applying the eschatological perspective to different dimensions of the Christian faith, of the life of the church, and of Christian ethics. His extremely readable style leads to profound insight. I particularly like the chapter on the ministry and the wisdom of his reflections on ethical questions." Wolfhart Pannenberg, University of Munich "More than any other theologian today, Braaten successfully relates biblical faith and ethics to the whole spectrum of urgent current concerns." Richard H. Hiers, Dept. of Religion, University of Florida "Braaten rightly insists that the church has lost its eschatological 'bite,' and he does much toward recovering that loss." Gerhard O. Forde, Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota "This book continues Braaten's persistent effort to interpret vital human concerns by the promise that the Lord lives." Robert W. Jenson, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Book excerpt: Exploring the symbolic meanings of the Bomb, this book excavates the "depth dimension" of the nuclear age. Rather than adding to the many ethical commentaries asking whether or not there should be nuclear weapons, the authors ask why there are nuclear weapons and a continuing arms race. They also address the kinds of symbolic changes that must occur in order to reverse the build-up of nuclear weapons. The authors approach these questions from the perspective of academic research, not from particular faith commitments, asking the reader to envision different human responses to this technology, human stances that can be illuminated by the creative insight of religious studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes in Oliver O’Donovan’s masterful “Ethics as Theology” project. In his first volume -- Self, World, and Time -- O’Donovan discusses Christian ethics as an intellectual discipline in relation to the humanities, especially philosophy, theology, and behavioral studies, and in relation to the Christian gospel. In Finding and Seeking O’Donovan traces the logic of moral thought from self-awareness to decision through the virtues of faith, hope, and love. Blending biblical, historico-theological, and contemporary ideas in its comprehensive survey, this second volume continues O’Donovan’s splendid study in ethics as theology and adds significantly to his previous theoretical reflection on Christian ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can theology be informed by science and inform science in turn? Can theology make significant contributions to the understanding of science? Wolfhart Pannenberg, Professor of Theology at the University of Munich, is a significant voice in the conversation between religion and science; however, almost all the material published about him speaks exclusively from a theological/philosophical perspective. Theologians and philosophers of religion often feel unqualified to address Pannenberg's dialogue with the natural sciences. Beginning with the End addresses this need. The collection begins with a thoughtful introduction mapping the science/religion dialogue and Pannenberg's place in it, followed by 4 pivotal essays by Pannenberg. It includes articles by distinguished scientists and theologians that compellingly analyze everything from behavioral genetics to evolutionary ecology. The editors have made the essays accessible to the general reader who is interested in the hotly debated terrain between religion and science.

The author of this essay believes that philosophy, the quintessence of human thinking, possesses a salvific power, as it offers the possibility of broadening the horizons of humanity, leading us out of the oppressive limits of our "hic et nunc." However, philosophical salvation needs to be found in time and space. The edification of a society based upon the ideal of solidarity, in which history may be meaningful for everyone, is its preeminent manifestation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom All The Way Up proposes four intertwined elements that make up the meaning of life—self-worth, purpose, identity, and hope. Materialism (atheism) claim the universe has no meaning, so there is no larger purposeful story into which we can place ourselves—we are left on our own to construct meaning for our lives. Barrigar argues, though, that the universe possess God’s meaning and purpose—to provide the space and conditions by which to bring about the existence of agape-capable beings in agape-loving relationships with God and with others. In effect, the universe is a great ‘freedom system’ designed by God with freedom built in ‘all the way up’, from the Big Bang to the emergence of big brains and free will. Barrigar describes the emergence of this system through his novel agape/probability account of God’s design for the universe, which integrates such disciplines as quantum physics, statistical mechanics, probability theory, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and game theory. This system sets up the conditions for a fundamental choice between autonomous freedom, which focuses principally on self, and agapic freedom, which focuses principally on God and on others. Materialism chooses autonomous freedom, but thereby introduces nihilism into each of the elements of meaning. In turns out that nihilism is a much greater problem for Materialism than suffering is for Theism. In contrast, agapic freedom infuses self-worth, purpose, identity, and hope with God’s agape-love, dispelling Materialism’s inherent nihilism. Freedom All The Way Up provides a dramatic new proposal for God and the meaning of life in our scientific and humanist age.
