Book excerpt: If modern automotive myth is to be believed, then America was built on the backs of a heavy-duty Mack, an International tractor, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and a Ford F-series pickup. This illustrated history of pickups, including Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, and Jeep, is a perfect addition to the library of anyone who loves the American story and the history of the working people of this nation. Pickup trucks were the workhorses of an entire nation for the best part of a centuryâ??a constant presence through American history. In the 1920's, hard-working Midwestern farmers relied on their Model Ts and Chevys to coax a living from the land before loading up and fleeing to California as fields turned to dust in the 1930s. Militarized pickups helped to win the war, though by the 1950s and ‘60s pickups were back on the farm, on the building site, or acting as carry-alls for rapidly-expanding businesses. Until the early 1960s, pickups were working vehicles but sales rocketed through the decade as they were used to haul boats and camping trailers or transport hunters into the field. It began to dawn, as two-car families became increasingly common, that two-seater pickups weren't quite as impractical as they seemed, and it was not unusual for the owner of a sedan or station wagon to buy a pickup as well.

This is an illustrated A-Z directory of classic American cars, with over 600 stunning photographs. From the Austin (1940-41) to the Wilton (1847-1924), each entry tells the story of the car from its inception, through its rise to success and then on to its place on the road today. It includes all the most well-known makes and models dating from the 19th century to the modern day - Chrysler, Buick, Pontiac, Studebaker and many more. It features many fascinating anecdotes, such as the Chrysler designer basing his model on the fighter jets he had mistaken for geese flying through the air. This is a beautiful photographic compendium of classic American vehicles, perfect for the automobile enthusiast. Nowhere is the car more strongly a part of society and a means of personal expression than in America. But for Americans, this love affair with the automobile goes deeper even still - America, after all, being a nation founded on free movement of populations. This is why the private car, when it arrived, had such an explosive effect. This beautifully illustrated A-Z directory of classic American cars looks in detail at the seminal models of the last century and a half, accompanied by beautiful colour and black and white photographs of the exteriors, interiors, engines and special features of each. The mixture of engaging anecdotes, fascinating facts and detailed specifications, as well as historical analysis of each brand's success and failure, make this the ultimate visual reference for anyone with an interest in cars or motoring.

Throughout author Tad Burness adds handwritten details not found anywhere else, including pointing out unusual options and differences found within a model. Automotive journalist Matt Stone provides a new general introduction and one to each era within the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feel the heat--the street heat from the 1960s and 70, when the meanest, fastest, and most powerful cars tore up the streets. Jim Campisano, editor in chief of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine, has written the ultimate, illustrated A to Z field guide of these supreme, extreme American vehicles. Muscle cars came onto the market when Detroit's "big three" manufacturers (Chevy, Ford, and Pontiac) decided to compete for a younger, more performance-obsessed buyer at the end of the 1950s. Gone were the bulky "land boats" with their huge fins; instead, out came lean ponycars, like the Dodge Coronet 500 Convertible and the Ford Falcon, pumped up on big-inch, high-compression, multiple-carburetor equipped super-mills. Though they were sold to the general public, any one of them, with only minor adjustments, could have won on the superspeedways of the NASCAR circuit. Even now, three decades after these gas-guzzling greyhounds went out of style, they regularly attract new generations of admirers throughout the world.
