Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ukrainians first came to Canada a century ago, seeking a new life on the western prairies. They brought with them an ancient and rich cultural tradition, deeply rooted in Christianity. The most visible symbol of this tradition is the Ukrainian church with its distinctive cupolas. As soon as the settlers were established in the new land, they began to reshape their environment by building churches in the styles they remembered from their homeland. In this richly illustrated volume, the authors trace the continuity of tradition in achitecture, art, and community life from Ukraine to the parishes of the Manitoba prairie. In a detailed examination of the exteriors and interiors of forty-nine churches, the book establishes a typology of Ukrainian church designs. Biographies of the architects, master builders, and artists are included, along with a guide to the art and architecture of a Ukrainian church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bitter separation of Ukraine's Orthodox churches is a microcosm of its societal strife. From 1917 onward, church leaders failed to agree on the church's mission in the twentieth century. The core issues of dispute were establishing independence from the Russian church and adopting Ukrainian as the language of worship. Decades of polemical exchanges and public statements by leaders of the separated churches contributed to the formation of their distinct identities and sharpened the friction amongst their respective supporters. In The Orthodox Church in Ukraine, Nicholas Denysenko provides a balanced and comprehensive analysis of this history from the early twentieth century to the present. Based on extensive archival research, Denysenko's study examines the dynamics of church and state that complicate attempts to restore an authentic Ukrainian religious identity in the contemporary Orthodox churches. An enhanced understanding of these separate identities and how they were forged could prove to be an important tool for resolving contemporary religious differences and revising ecclesial policies. This important study will be of interest to historians of the church, specialists of former Soviet countries, and general readers interested in the history of the Orthodox Church.

Book excerpt: This careful, sometimes innovative, mid-level commentary touches on an astonishingly wide swath of important, sensitive issues - theological and pastoral - that have urgent resonances in twenty-first-century life. This thorough commentary presents a coherent reading of 1 Corinthians, taking full account of its Old Testament and Jewish roots and demonstrating Paula's primary concern for the unity and purity of the church and the glory of God. Those who preach and teach 1 Corinthians will be grateful to Ciampa and Rosner for years to come and scholars will be challenged to see this letter with fresh eyes.

The work satirized the bizarre elements that appear in Gnostic mythology, ridiculing the Gnostics for creating elaborate cosmologies, with multi-storied heavens like apartment houses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before in living memory has the Catholic Church struggled and suffered as much as it has in the last three decades. The sexual and physical abuse of the young by churchmen precipitated a public relations disaster with the consequent loss of some three billion dollars in legal expenses and the defrocking of thousands of clergymen. The primary victims of this crisis were the abused youth and their families. But also victimized were the Church's missionary and vocation efforts. The lack of clergy prompted the closure of healthy parishes and curtailment of youth ministries. It is now time for the Church to rise up and deal with all these tough problems. But it needs new and bold ideas to solve these manifold crises. This book offers the Church leaders such new and bold ideas.

Book excerpt: "...a thoughtful and objective treatise for understanding the ecclesiastical crisis that has been created by the Ecumenical Patriarchate's granting autocephaly to schismatic groups in Ukraine." - +TIMOTHEOS, Metropolitan of Bostra (Patriarchate of Jerusalem) "We pray to the Almighty God and the Most-Holy Theotokos that this division ends quickly and Church order will reign again. We are pleased that writings such as this work by Metropolitan Nikiforos are working towards this correction." +LONGIN, Bishop of New Gracanica and Midwestern America (Church of Serbia) "This lively analysis presents the situation of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine in an accessible way to both theologians, the faithful, and all people interested in the topic of the unity of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine." +ABEL, Archbishop of Lublin and Chelm (Church of Poland) "This is a serious study of a crisis in the life of our Orthodox Church worldwide that deserves to be widely read as we seek to understand the underlying issues more clearly and find a conciliar solution that brings both unity and peace." +JURAJ, Archbishop of Michalovce and Košice (Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia) This is essential reading for all Orthodox believers to better understand what the Ukrainian crisis means for the future of their Church. It will also assist others to see beyond the characterization of the crisis as a political event in the context of relations between Russia and the West. It makes clear that at its heart this is an ecclesiological dispute calling out for a conciliar solution. In the autumn of 2018 the Russian Orthodox Church broke communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople following the latter Synod's announcement of their intention to create an autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). In December of that year a formal council was convened in Kiev and this new ecclesial body was created from two Ukrainian groups previously considered schismatic by all of the Orthodox churches worldwide. All of this transpired without any attempt by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to seek a consensus of all the Orthodox churches before embarking this course of action. More than two years later the newly created OCU remains unrecognised by the overwhelming majority of the world's Orthodox believers notwithstanding that it has in that time been been recognised as Orthodox by the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. But even this recognition has not been without significant dissenting voices. Among these is the Abbot of the renowned Kykkos monastery in Cyprus, Metropolitan Nikiforos. In this pithy text he eloquently explains why the actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate have created a schism in the Orthodox Church worldwide and how in turn they reflect the promotion of a new ecclesiology that distorts the traditional understanding of the Orthodox Church as headed only by Christ Himself. He is clear that the only road to healing and unending schism is a return to a form of inter-Orthodox relations which respects both conciliarity and hierarchy. In doing this he stresses his utmost respect for the historical place of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the hope that it will turn back from the path it is currently on to resume its rightful place in the plurality of the Orthodox Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Halimpex, of Lviv, Ukraine had just been recognized as the world's largest volume producer of glass Christmas tree ornaments, when on November 14th, 2006, Bohdan Datsko its owner, was gunned down as his white C-class Mercedes passed through the security gate of his factory. Despite seven bullet wounds to the neck and chest, nobody had heard anything; nobody saw a gun; and no cartridge casings were found on the scene. Bohdan's driver, sitting beside the victim was unaware of anything amiss until he saw the blood. Six days later, Mad Max Kurochkin, a notorious Russian gangster, was arrested on charges of theft and extortion upon his landing in Kyiv while on his way to make preparations for President Putin's visit to Ukraine. Three days later, on November 23rd, Alexander Litvinenko died in London, England, of Polonium 210 radiation poisoning. On March 31, 2007, Mad Max Kurochkin was assassinated by a sniper's bullet, while he was being led from a Kyiv courthouse to a waiting paddy wagon. The sniper was not apprehended. In today's Ukraine, reality is much stranger than fiction. But Yaroslaw's Revenge threads a story through this tangled web to culminate in a story even stranger still The western world's press reported an act of piracy in the Baltic Sea, just off the coast of Sweden on July 24, 2009. Then, on July 28, the victim freighter, the MV Arctic Sea, sailed past Dover reporting, when hailed by the British Coast Guard, that all was in order. Yet the Russian Navy had already sent its entire Black Sea Fleet in pursuit of this ship - that was ostensibly carrying nothing but lumber. The MV Arctic Sea totally missed its destination port of Bejaia Algeria, and instead sailed slowly southward along Africa's western coast. In Yaroslaw's Revenge the tale of the MV Arctic Sea's actual cargo is the thread that links murder, assassination, piracy, espionage, drugs and war with the untimely death, on the third anniversary of that of Alexander Litvinenko, of Maj. Gen. Anton Surikov of the Russian GRU. The Cold War thriller is back! This time it is Canada's ITAC, the Integrated Threat Assessment Center, that holds the key to interdiction of a nuclear threat.

The Catechism of Pope St. Pius X is that pope's partial realization of a simple, plain, brief, popular Catechism for uniform use throughout the whole world. In other words it is directed to the layman . It was used in the ecclesiastical province of Rome and for some years in other parts of Italy. It was not, however, prescribed for use throughout the universal church. Aeterna Press

Virtually all attention these days is focused on the coming Antichrist—but he is only half the story. Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast. Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn’t such a view outdated? After all, today’s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. “The Catholic church has changed” is what we hear. Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist’s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman’s identity beyond any reasonable doubt. A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come.
