Book excerpt: Since 2015, British photographer Mark Neville (born 1966) has been documenting life in Ukraine, with subjects ranging from holidaymakers on the beaches of Odessa and the Roma communities on the Hungarian border to those internally displaced by the war in Eastern Ukraine. Employing his activist strategy of a targeted book dissemination, Neville is committed to making a direct impact upon the war in Ukraine. He will distribute 2,000 copies of this volume free to policy makers, opinion makers, members of parliament both in Ukraine and Russia, members of the international community and those involved directly in the Minsk Agreements. He means to reignite awareness about the war, galvanize the peace talks and attempt to halt the daily bombing and casualties in Eastern Ukraine which have been occurring for four years now. Neville's images are accompanied by writings from both Russian and Ukrainian novelists, as well as texts from policy makers and the international community, to suggest how to end the conflict.

This is a book of spirit, strong and willing, as spirit should be." ~ Lyudmyla Khersonska Author of "Vse svoi," and "Tyl'naia-litsevaia," reflections on Russian aggression in Ukraine. "Fresh on the heels of editing the wide-ranging and necessary anthology, "Sunflowers: Ukrainian Poetry on War, Resistance, Hope and Peace," poet Kalpna Singh-Chitnis has responded with impassioned verses of empathy in "Love Letters to Ukraine from Uyava" as the war rages on in Ukraine. These are poems meant to bridge the divide between one world and another, between a lover and those fighting on the front lines of Ukraine. " ~ Brian Turner, Author of "Here, Bullet." "We had Auden, and we had Sassoon, but we now have Kalpna Singh-Chitnis with a different take on war. ~ Yogesh Patel MBE "Love Letters to Ukraine from Uyava" is among the most important books of American, Ukrainian, and Indian literary societies with a cultural mission." ~ Volodymyr Tymchuk - Poet, Translator and Lieutenant Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine "A common spiritual child, a representative of the Indian and Ukrainian people will bring us all closer to purification by a drop, a spark, and a metaphor." ~ Ihor Pavliuk - People's Poet of Ukraine, Winner of the British PEN Prize and Swiss Literary Prize 2021 "Kalpna Singh-Chitnis' patriotic poems are her original interpretation of love poetry, which grows from nostalgic listening to the voices of Ukraine, attempting to go beyond the pathos and rhetorics of textbook ideas, expanding horizons with visions, overcoming fears and deep wounds with one word-LOVE." ~ Marianna Cheletska, Literary Critic "Real Windows, Beyond the Nightly News. After reading these poems, one questions why this is happening and what is important to live, defend, and even die for?" ~ Michael Whelan, Poet, military historian, and a corporal in the Irish Air Corps of Irish Defense Forces "Love Letters to Ukraine by Kalpna Singh-Chitnis is an extraordinarily compelling call for love that can transform the insides of both, the writer as well as those who "receive" the letters." ~ Sukrita Paul Kumar, Poet, and Author of Vanishing Words "These are not just poems of love but an exhortation to fight on, a declaration of the victory of the Ukrainian and the human spirit." ~ Zilka Joseph, Author of In Our Beautiful Bones and Sparrows and Dust "Love Letters to Ukraine from Uyava" is fiercely passionate and compassionate. Through her "love letters," Singh-Chitnis conducts a symphony of love set to the cacophony of war machines." ~ Ami Kaye, Publisher & Editor, Glass Lyre Press, LLC "In Love Letters to Ukraine from Uyava, the emotional horizon that Singh-Chitnis evokes is both expansive and intimate, bringing the reader into contact with what is essential to the human condition: compassion and understanding." ~ Richard Modiano, Author of The Forbidden Lunch Box, and Director Emeritus Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center "Kalpna Singh-Chitnis breathes love into her latest poetry collection, Love Letters to Ukraine from Uyava. Book excerpt: Since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, former Soviet republic Ukraine has struggled against its “giant neighbor to the north”—Russia— to maintain its sovereignty. In early 2014 tensions turned to conflict as Vladimir Putin, determined to keep Ukraine from forging stronger ties with the West, seized Crimea and fomented conflict in eastern Ukraine. In the latest Brookings essay, Chrystia Freeland, a former Ukrainian-based reporter with strong family ties to the country, offers a personal reflection on the conflict and the sentiment of the Ukrainian people. She highlights the fact that despite historic, cultural, and linguistic ties between the two countries, Ukrainians stand defiant in their desire for independence.

Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of a US Special Forces soldier who was medically retired after stepping on an IED, and his incredible return to active duty. Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Hendrickson is a brave, determined, and courageous soldier -- a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the "tip of the spear," his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of IEDs -- improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 -- knowing that he was in "uncleared" territory -- Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg. American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan's story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012. In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that "no one gets left behind." For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation's third-highest award for valor. An engaging and harrowing account, Tip of the Spear tells the amazing story of one Green Beret's indomitable spirit.

Book excerpt: What do you want from me, I asked. Everything you're not prepared to offer, grief said. And so, we sat quietly, listening to the noise of our rabbit hearts, and gave our stories to each other. What if you learned to love the very thing you're scared of? conversation with grief is part of a series of three collections of poetry and prose taking the reader into the realization that learning about the 'big moments' in life means having raw and vulnerable conversations with yourself, with others, with memories, music, words, loss, and healing. In "conversation with grief", Tetyana sees a scale of life where grief and loss exist everywhere: within joy and pain, within beauty and tragedy. And ultimately, the hardest and most rewarding thing we can do is to sit with grief, talk to it, live with it like a friend we can learn from and heal with. Tetyana's writing has been called "haunting", "bold and lyrical", "completely heartbreaking", and a beautiful study of connection, humanity, and how we can all learn from each other's stories."

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER From ground zero of this country's most important project: reconciliation Niigaan Sinclair has been called provocative, revolutionary, and one of this country's most influential thinkers on the issues impacting Indigenous cultures, communities, and reconciliation in Canada. In his debut collection of stories, observations, and thoughts about Winnipeg, the place he calls "ground zero" of Canada's future, read about the complex history and contributions of this place alongside the radical solutions to injustice and violence found here, presenting solutions for a country that has forgotten principles of treaty and inclusivity. It is here, in the place where Canada began—where the land, water, people, and animals meet— that a path "from the centre" is happening for all to see. At a crucial and fragile moment in Canada's long history with Indigenous peoples, one of our most essential writers begins at the centre, capturing a web spanning centuries of community, art, and resistance. Based on years' worth of columns, Niigaan Sinclair delivers a defining essay collection on the resilience of Indigenous peoples. Here, we meet the creators, leaders, and everyday people preserving the beauty of their heritage one day at a time. But we also meet the ugliest side of colonialism, the Indian Act, and the communities who suffer most from its atrocities. Sinclair uses the story of Winnipeg to illuminate the reality of Indigenous life all over what is called Canada. This is a book that demands change and celebrates those fighting for it, that reminds us of what must be reconciled and holds accountable those who must do the work. It's a book that reminds us of the power that comes from loving a place, even as that place is violently taken away from you, and the magic of fighting your way back to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Maidan in Kyiv and Russian presence in the Crimea, Ukraine has never been the same. In 2014, the country is deeply divided by the conflict imposed on the Ukrainians. But since nobody actually asked the nation, author Oleksandr Shyshko decided to take matters into his own hands and look for the answer to the ultimate question – who are the Ukrainians and what do they want. Shyshko spent his time researching the national identity of native Ukrainians, and as he went he stumbled on a discovery that led to yet another question – where is Ukraine going, the so-called Quo vadis? of the Ukrainian people. His findings and critical comments gave birth to this new book that is now for the first time being published in English. To Get Ukraine.

It's told through the eyes of Czarina, then a young girl on the brink of womanhood. Together with her mother, Anastasia, they make the long, dangerous and emotional journey, back to the family's native land to be reunited with her mother whom she had not seen for thirty long years. With flashbacks, it tells of Anastasia's pre-war and wartime hardships', her life as a slave labourer in Nazi Germany, a Displaced Person in England and the discovery of her brother's betrayal and execution. Uncovering the truth, Anastasia seeks justice for her dead brother. Amidst this unfurling series of events, Czarina meets and falls in love with a young Russian Naval Officer. Together the two strands of the story, revenge, passion and the explicit explosion of a young woman's carnal awakening, weave a compelling narrative of life and young love in 1960's Communist Europe.
