Book Synopsis Biblical Form Criticism in its Context by : Martin J. Buss
Download or read book Biblical Form Criticism in its Context written by Martin J. Buss and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-02-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magnum opus is not another catalogue of the forms of biblical literature, but a deeply reflected account of the significance of form itself. Buss writes out of his experience in Western philosophy and the intricate involvement of biblical criticism in philosophical history. Equally, biblical criticism and the development of notions of form are related to social contexts, whether from the side of the aristocracy (tending towards generality) or of the bourgeois (tending towards particularity) or of an inclusive society (favouring a relational view). Form criticism, in Buss's conception, is no mere formal exercise, but the observation of interrelationships among thoughts and moods, linguistic regularities and the experiences and activities of life. This work, with its many examples from both Testaments, will be fundamental for Old and New Testament scholars alike.

Book Synopsis Africa, Asia, and the History of Philosophy by : Peter K. J. Park
Download or read book Africa, Asia, and the History of Philosophy written by Peter K. J. Park and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 Frantz Fanon Prize for Outstanding Book in Caribbean Thought presented by the Caribbean Philosophical Association In this provocative historiography, Peter K. J. Park provides a penetrating account of a crucial period in the development of philosophy as an academic discipline. During these decades, a number of European philosophers influenced by Immanuel Kant began to formulate the history of philosophy as a march of progress from the Greeks to Kant—a genealogy that supplanted existing accounts beginning in Egypt or Western Asia and at a time when European interest in Sanskrit and Persian literature was flourishing. Not without debate, these traditions were ultimately deemed outside the scope of philosophy and relegated to the study of religion. Park uncovers this debate and recounts the development of an exclusionary canon of philosophy in the decades of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. To what extent was this exclusion of Africa and Asia a result of the scientization of philosophy? To what extent was it a result of racism? This book includes the most extensive description available anywhere of Joseph-Marie de Gérando's Histoire comparée des systèmes de philosophie, Friedrich Schlegel's lectures on the history of philosophy, Friedrich Ast's and Thaddä Anselm Rixner's systematic integration of Africa and Asia into the history of philosophy, and the controversy between G. W. F. Hegel and the theologian August Tholuck over "pantheism."

Book Synopsis J. S. Bach's Johannine Theology by : Eric Chafe
Download or read book J. S. Bach's Johannine Theology written by Eric Chafe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach's Johannine Theology: The St. John Passion and the Cantatas for Spring 1725 is a fertile examination of this group of fourteen surviving liturgical works. Renowned Bach scholar Eric Chafe begins his investigation into Bach's theology with the composer's St. John Passion, concentrating on its first and last versions. Beyond providing a uniquely detailed assessment of the passion, Bach's Johannine Theology is the first work to take the work beyond the scope of an isolated study, considering its meaning from a variety of musical and historical standpoints. Chafe thereby uncovers a range of theological implications underlying Bach's creative approach itself. Building considerably on his previous work, Chafe here expands his methodological approach to Bach's vocal music by arguing for a multi-layered approach to religion in Bach's compositional process. Chafe bases this approach primarily on two aspects of Bach's theology: first, the specific features of Johannine theology, which contrast with the more narrative approach found in the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke); and second, contemporary homiletic and devotional writings - material that is not otherwise easily accessible, and less so in English translation. Bach's Johannine Theology provides an unprecedented, enlightening exploration of the theological and liturgical contexts within which this music was first heard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.M.L. de Wette (1780-1849) was not only one of the founders of modern Old Testament criticism. His loss and recovery of Christian faith, his dismissal from his post in Berlin in 1819 on political grounds and his long subsequent exile in Basel left their mark upon his work in New Testament ethics, dogmatics and aesthetics. This first modern critical study of de Wette's life and work evaluates his achievements in the context of his own times and asesses their importance on modern biblical scholars.

Book Synopsis The Problem of Christ in the Work of Friedrich Hölderlin by : Mark Ogden
Download or read book The Problem of Christ in the Work of Friedrich Hölderlin written by Mark Ogden and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sets out to challenge the usual approach to the question of Holderlin's response to Christ, which focuses on no more than two or three late hymns, by tracing, through each major stage of Holderlin's work, a series of latent Christological debates. These debates, in which philosophy, theology, and poetry converge, represent Holderlin's engagement with the urgent intellectual issues of his day.
