Book excerpt: Mr. Jukes maintains that the acts of God in the natural world, and the events that spring from them, are types of analogous acts and events in the spiritual world; and it is the aim of his volume to draw a parallel between the creation of the earth and man, and the renovation of the mind by the Spirit, and to show that Adam, Cain, Abel, Noah, Abraham, and others, are types, in their experiences and characters, of the experiences and characters of men generally in the sphere of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Natural Kinds and Genesis: The Classification of Material Entities, Stewart Umphrey raises and answers two questions: What is it to be a natural kind? And are there in fact any natural kinds? First, using the everyday understanding of things, he argues that natural kinds may be understood as classes or as types, and that the members or tokens of such kinds are individual continuants. A continuant is essentially a being-in-becoming, a material thing which changes and yet remains the same, in virtue of its nature or essence, as long as it exists. In the primary sense of the term, then, a natural kind is a class whose members closely resemble one another substantially, in virtue of their essences. Alternatively, it is a type whose tokens exemplify it in virtue of their essences. To answer the second question, one must make use of relevant scientific theories as well. Umphrey agrees with scientific essentialists that there are natural kinds, but he argues that most of the chemical, physical, and biological kinds posited in current theories are not natural kinds in the primary sense of the term. The natural-kinds realism he affirms is thus quite restricted: it requires the existence of enduring things which closely resemble one another in virtue of their essences, and such things exist, apparently, only if they have come into being, or emerged, in the course of symmetry-breaking events. Natural Kinds and Genesis will be of interest to philosophers of science and to those interested in the metaphysics of natural kinds and their members.

Very creatively, Humphreys explores the coherence and consistency of God as a character, the way in which God's character changes and develops throughout the narrative, and how giving attention to the character of God enriches our experience of reading Genesis.

Book excerpt: Andrew Jukes presents a detailed analysis of the Book of Genesis, describing the characters and events of the first book of the Bible, and discussing the significance of each passage. A Bible study distinctive and superb for its analytical depth, The Types of Genesis explores the Book of Genesis in a way which reveals the depth of its words. It is not simply a narration of events following the Creation and a history of early humankind, but an explanation of human nature, the power of the human spirit, and God's relationship with all beings. Jukes structures his analysis through focusing upon the deeds of individual figures described in Genesis - Adam, the first man created. Cain, who murdered his brother Abel and was condemned to be a wanderer. Noah, who foresaw the Great Flood and constructed his Ark for him and the world's animals to survive the deluge. Abraham, a settler who was granted the lands of Canaan by God. Isaac, son of Abraham, who was to be sacrificed by his father but was saved at the last moment. Jacob, patriarch of the Israelites. Finally there is Joseph; sold into slavery but becoming the vizier of the Egyptian Pharaoh.
