Book Synopsis Family Therapy in Clinical Practice by : Murray Bowen
Download or read book Family Therapy in Clinical Practice written by Murray Bowen and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 1993-12-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Bowen was a student and practitioner of classical psychoanalysis at the Menninger Clinic, he became engrossed in understanding the process of schizophrenia and its relationship to mother-child symbiosis. Between the years 1950 and 1959, at Menninger and later at the National Institute of Mental Health (as first chief of family studies), he worked clinically with over 500 schizophrenic families. This extensive experience was a time of fruition for his thinking as he began to conceptualize human behavior as emerging from within the context of a family system. Later, at Georgetown University Medical School, Bowen worked to extend the application of his ideas to the neurotic family system. Initially he saw his work as an amplification and modification of Freudian theory, but later viewed it as an evolutionary step toward understanding human beings as functioning within their primary networkDtheir family. One of the most renowned theorist and therapist in the field of family work, this book encompasses the breadth and depth of Bowen's contributions. It presents the evolution of Bowen's Family Theory from his earliest essays on schizophrenic families and their treatment, through the development of his concepts of triangulation, intergenerational conflict and societal regression, and culminating in his brilliant exploration of the differentiation of one's self in one's family of origin.
Book Synopsis The Family Emotional System by : Robert J. Noone
Download or read book The Family Emotional System written by Robert J. Noone and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Family Emotional System: An Integrative Concept for Theory, Science, and Practice presents an ongoing dialogue among scientists, family investigators, and clinicians related to a natural systems view of the family and human behavior that has been occurring over several decades. The concept of the family as an emotional system, as defined in Bowen theory, is presented as the principal integrative concept underlying this dialogue and an effort to move toward a science of human behavior. As a natural system, the family forms the immediate and most important context for individual development, and may be the most central and important environment shaping brain development across the lifetime of the individual. This book explains how the family system can serve as an integrative framework within which specific factual discoveries and hypotheses from many areas of science can be brought together and understood as various manifestations of a coherent whole. The Family Emotional System provides understanding of what is entailed in conceptualizing the family as an emotional system, a sense of the breadth and depth of knowledge the sciences are contributing to this effort, and examples of how this theoretical framework contributes to family research and practice. The richness and excitement occurring in the ongoing dialogue between scientists and Bowen family systems practitioners and researchers is captured along with the promise it holds for the study of human behavior.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Family and Marital Therapy by : Sharon A. Shueman
Download or read book Handbook of Family and Marital Therapy written by Sharon A. Shueman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family and marital therapies are rapidly becoming highly used methods of treatment of mental disorders and are no longer ancillary methods to individual psychotherapy. The last few decades have brought about an increasing awareness of the fact that, excluding organic etiology, practically all mental disorders are caused, fostered, and/or related to faulty interpersonal relations. As a rule, the .earlier in life one is exposed to noxious factors, the more severe is the damage. Thus, early child-parents' and child-siblings' interactions are highly relevant determinants of mental health and mental disorder. Moreover, parents themselves do not live in a vacuum. Their marital interaction significantly contributes to their own mental health or to its decline, and parent-child relationships are greatly influenced by the nature of intraparental relationships. Parental discord, conflicts, and abandonment affect the child's personality development. Thus, family and marital therapy is more than therapy; it is an important contribution to the prevention of mental disorder. The present volume is comprised of three parts. The first, primarily theoretical, analyzes the fundamental aspects of marital and family therapy. The second part describes the various therapeutic techniques and the last deals with several specific issues. It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge my gratitude to my coeditor, Dr. George Stricker. Without his thorough and devoted efforts, this volume could not have come into being. I am also profoundly indebted to our consulting editors, Dr. James Framo, Dr.

Download or read book Family Evaluation written by Murray Bowen and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concepts of Murray Bowen, one of the founders of family therapy and the originator of family systems theory, are brought together here in an integrative fashion. Michael Kerr (who worked with Bowen for many years) and Bowen propose that the enormously complex task of evaluating a clinical family can be orderly when it is grounded in family systems theory. Using family diagrams and case studies, the book is devoted to an elegant explication of Bowen theory, which analyzes multigenerational family relationships and conceptualizes the family as an emotional unit or as a network of interlocking relationships, not only among the family members, but also among biological, psychological, and sociological processes. Bowen’s persistent inquiry and devotion to family observation, in spite of obstacles and frustrations, have resulted in a theory that has radically changed our ways of looking at all behavior.

Book Synopsis An Ethical Right to Life by : Manfred H. Vogel
Download or read book An Ethical Right to Life written by Manfred H. Vogel and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2004 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on the issue of an ethical right to life. Its aim is to formulate a persuasive answer the question: What attribute can endow an entity with an ethical right to not have its existence terminated? In pursuing this objective, this work manifests three distinctive features. The first regards the delineation of the ethical enterprise. The second identifies self-consciousness as the attribute that endows an entity with an ethical right to life (this entity being the human entity, being that only the human entity possesses self-consciousness). Finally, the third feature lies in the kind of conclusion at which we can arrive, in the light of the foregoing two features, regarding the various issues implicating the termination of life such as abortion, euthanasia, suicide, assistant-suicide, and capital punishment. The issue of an ethical right to life is heavily politicized and divisive in Western societies. The reflections and analyses offered in An Ethical Right to Life contribute a much-needed clarification to the on-going discussion.

Book Synopsis Believe Me Or Your Lying Eyes With "Hind" Sight! by : Lou Illar
Download or read book Believe Me Or Your Lying Eyes With "Hind" Sight! written by Lou Illar and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book." Groucho Marx In 1957, Vance Packard wrote. "Our American life, through a large scale effort to use psychiatry and the social sciences to influence and manipulate buying, has had impressive success below our level of awareness." Since 1957, there is great evidence that our culture has become a harbinger of emotional exploitation in more forms than we can recognize and irrational profit taking in more forms than we can image. In these times, investing in a charity is not easy within a gambling culture that has glamorized wind fall profits, and run away CEO salaries. It certainly worsens when these efforts become unfettered, and ignored by business efforts that not only fail to provide a product of value but offer no product at all. This madness can only succeed by turning huge profits through the creation of cannibalistic markets and non-profit corporations that feed on gambling addictions which buy moments of hope as they excite and exploit risk instincts. This baiting continues to validate at warp speed the assumption that we are a nation of impulse buyers. We reverse like a school of starving gold fish fearful of the vibrations of mere foot steps and unable to notice bread crumbs on top of the water. No doubt someone has convinced us that with every failure there will always be another roll of the 'dice.' The more relevant question of interest is who will roll those dice on your internet gambling site? No doubt we have become more reactive but worse we have become less knowledgeable. This writing is offered to encourage your thoughtfulness about your money and who andwhat you empower as you give it away.
