Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Continents and One Island conveys a physical representation to the metaphorical, mental, and spiritual journey of growth undertaken by the protagonist through life's unknowns. It chronicles the author's life story, starting in Zambia, Africa, where he was born and raised, through Cuba, where he attended postsecondary education, to North America, where he ultimately established his professional life. It makes for an intriguing life story of perseverance and opportunity interspersed with failures and successes, sorrows and laughter, ups and downs, but above all God's direction at every turn. The interweaving of religion and morality, recurring as a predominant theme, is well presented through the author's unique experiences in three unique environments. The story is not merely a series of facts about the protagonist's life, but it also fluidly manages to reflect the author's views on religion, politics, and social themes from both the perspectives of being a devout Christian and a vulnerable young man on a sojourn to distant lands while surrounded by temptations, which are usually quite different. Yet he manages to reconcile these viewpoints very nicely and shows how a "black and white" view on morals and the world can become grayer and still retain its righteous character. This blend between spirituality, carnal desires masquerading as temptations of a young man and his unique perspective on politics in a time of extreme political upheaval makes for the most fascinating storyline in the book. While the author is quick to point out that this is not a story about the rise from poverty to riches, he lays out an interesting perspective of how Providence orchestrated his life and miraculously opened doors at every step of the way with the help of what he commonly refers to as human angels. In the end, he reminds us that, all things considered, success, no matter how it is defined, is uniquely about tenacity and will. The memoir covers an array of universal experiences, such as growth, spirituality, culture, and politics. It is a well-written and fascinating book as it provides a unique perspective on such difficult times in the author's history and journey. Additionally, it paints an interesting viewpoint likely to capture the attention and enjoyment of those who may not have shared the journey and origins. Whether it is the reader wishing to explore life's paradoxes in the diaspora or the immigrant who may draw upon the common experience or perhaps the curious reader wishing to explore the intricacies of a closed socialist system, everyone will find the story relatable and easier to share in the experience of the protagonist.

Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

Book excerpt: The White Island is, and always has been, a magnet for hedonists. Its history reads like a history of pleasure itself. It is also a story of invasions and migrations, of artists and conmen, of drop-outs and love-ins. The Carthaginians established a cult to their goddess of sex there, and named the island after Bez, their god of dance. Roman centurions in need of a bit of down time between campaigns would go to Ibiza to get their kicks. And over the centuries, cultures around the Med have used the island either as a playground or a dump for the kind of people who didn't quite fit in back home, but who you'd probably quite like to meet at a party... This is the history of Ibiza, the fantasy island, framed by one long, golden summer where anything can happen - and it usually does.

Book excerpt: An amazing tale of real adventure and genuine exploration in the modern era - unexplored regions, fearless animals, no support crew, disaster, excitement - the lot!' Dick Smith In 2005, Australians Chris Bray (then 21 years old) and Clark Carter (20) dreamed of embarking on an adventure — one that would be completely different to any polar, mountaineering or river expedition ever before attempted. With virtually no prior experience they turned their attention to one of the largest islands in the world - Victoria Island in the Canadian Arctic - and vowed to cross it on foot. It was to be a world-first, traversing 1000 kilometres of perhaps the most extreme and diverse landscape on the planet - everything from snow and ice to mud, shattered rock, rivers and fields of boulders. Travelling without any support across previously unexplored territory, Chris and Clark hauled everything they needed behind them in homemade wheeled kayaks, each weighing a quarter of a tonne. Hiding from polar bears, being chased by wolves and discovering ancient Inuit relics along the way, the pair faced obstacles that ensured their journey was as much a mental battle as it was physical. After 58 gruelling days, their first attempt failed. Undeterred, the duo spent the next three years learning new skills, redesigning their equipment and raising money, and in 2008 they went back for another 75 days to finish what they stared. With humour and honesty, Chris Bray tells their thrilling story - the drama, the dangers and the sheer exhilaration of exploring a terrain filled with magic and wonder.

Book excerpt: In the bitter winds of autumn 1963, Tove Jansson, helped by Brunström, a maverick fisherman, raced to build a cabin on a treeless skerry in the Gulf of Finland. The island was Klovharun, and for thirty summers Tove and her beloved partner, the graphic artist, Tuulikki Pietilä, retreated there to live, paint and write, energised by the solitude and shifting seascapes. Notes from an Island, published in English for the first time, is both a chronicle of this period and a homage to the mature love that Tove and 'Tooti' shared for their island and for each other. Tove's spare prose, and Tuulikki's subtle washes and aquatints combine to form a work of meditative beauty. '... Tooti wandered aimlessly around the island and stood stock still for long periods. I thought I knew what she was doing. She was working again. Copperplate etchings and wash drawings. Mostly the lagoon, the lagoon as a consummate mirror for clouds and birds, the lagoon in a storm, in fog. And the granite, first and foremost, the granite, the cliff, the rocks. It's all peace and quiet now.'

One of the most controversial issues, the internment of 'enemy aliens' (and also British subjects) on the Isle of Man, received its first thorough examination in this account by Connery Chappell of life in the Manx camps between 1940 and 1945." "At the outbreak of war there were approximately 75,000 people of Germanic origin living in Britain, and Whitehall decided to set up Enemy Alien Tribunals to screen these 'potential security risks'. The entry of Italy into the war almost doubled the workload. The first tribunal in February 1940 considered only 569 cases as high enough risks to warrant internment. The Isle of Man was chosen as the one place sufficiently removed from areas of military importance, but by the end of the year the number of enemy aliens on the island had reached 14,000." "Even now, there remains the persistent question never settled satisfactorily. Were the internments ever justified or even consistent?"--BOOK JACKET.
