Book excerpt: "An inspiring yet relatable read for anyone ready to stop settling." —Nina Ruggiero, Travel + Leisure In this inspiring memoir—the antidote to the “just quit your job and ditch all your belongings to backpack the world” mentality—a young woman explores how she took calculated risks to follow her dreams: traveling and living abroad without sacrificing stability and comfort. Like many young professionals, Helene settled into a steady 9-5, watching the clock tick by and dreaming of seeing the world one day. But after a climbing accident leaves her bedbound for months, she finds a new voice connecting with others online and starts a blog to write about her true passion: travel. When her blog takes off and a sponsored trip overseas opens her eyes, she wonders: could she lead a stable life while traveling the world? From skinny dipping in the icy Baltic and hiking Germany’s storied Black Forest, to wrestling with visa applications and apartment hunting in medieval Heidelberg, Helene shares the realities—both the magical and the mundane—that come with chasing bold dreams and learning that home is where you make it. For those who fear change, the secret lies in taking calculated risks. Uplifting yet candid, Helene’s story will inspire others to take chances and transform their own lives. But you don’t have to uproot your life to find meaning—just have the heart to take a leap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book I have written. The Lord has been gently prodding me to write it for twenty years. I simply could not bring myself to do so. There is quite a bit of danger and violence in this book. I Should Have Been Dead and Gone is the true story of my life, beginning around four years old. Every incident is true, although names and cities have been changed for privacy reasons. I received a lot of healing as I wrote my life story. I wrote this book entirely as the Lord told me to. It was written to give someone hope and encouragement that you too will make it through dark times in your life. If just one person is helped in any way, then my prayer has been answered.

Book excerpt: Jim Heaney was born an Irish-Catholic alcoholic. He remains one today. However, he has been sober for the past 21 years. No one has yet found a cure for the Irish-Catholicism. This story begins in a tiny house in Jacksonville, Florida, and ends in a slightly larger one in Columbia, South Carolina. Residences in central Florida, Indiana, Liberia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, England, Zaire (now Congo), and Kansas follow in that order. Much of Dr. Heaney's life involved battles. His most difficult ones were within himself. He struggled with low self-esteem, academics, addiction, religion, and infidelity. Several of these skirmishes are ongoing. In his youth, he learned to his distain that "dilettante" referred to someone who dabbled in the arts and academics. Someone who knew a little about a lot. During his twilight years, Jim came to realize that he was that dilettante for whom he'd had low regard. Yet age had allowed him to accept that dabbler and, hence, himself. The older he became, the more he realized the less he knew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie Bashkirtseff's diary was first published in 1887, and was only the second diary by a woman published in France till that date. It was an immediate success. British Prime Minister William Gladstone referred to her diary as "a book without a parallel", and another early admirer was George Bernard Shaw. Her diary was cited as an inspiration by the American writer Mary MacLane, whose own shockingly confessional diary was written a bare generation later, and it was mentioned as a model by later writers who became known for their diaries, including Pierre Louÿs, Katherine Mansfield, and Anais Nin. Bashkirtseff's diary has been called "a strikingly modern psychological self-portrait of a young, gifted mind," and her urgent prose, which occasionally breaks out into dialogue, remains extremely readable. She was multilingual and despite her self-involvement, was a keen observer with an acute ear for hypocrisy, so that her diary also offers a near-novelistic account of the late nineteenth century European bourgeoisie. A consistent theme throughout her journal is her deep desire to achieve fame, inflected by her increasing fear that her intermittent illnesses might turn out to be tuberculosis.

Book excerpt: What could possibly go wrong when a group of naïve Americans, from a small Southern town, tour Italy as a group? Tour organizer Carl Minton has his hands full as his forty-four clients negotiate cultural differences, interpret Italian through Southern dialects, and encounter unexpected challenges during a tour that includes Rome, Tuscany, and Venice. To complicate matters, Carl and the handsome tour guide, Francois, appear to fall in love, and steal every opportunity to be alone together, while one of the passengers looks for every opportunity to steal. The mishaps include drunkenness, obstinacy and indolence, pick-pocketing, general forgetfulness, and, of course, shop-lifting. Carl’s trials are as exasperating as anything in a Kafka novel, but full of laughs on every page. Francois explains the differences between the two societies and Carl manages, in spite of his trials, to appreciate the magnificent Italian countryside and the experience of love and friendship.

Book excerpt: It is A.D. 70, and Evardus, a wine merchant from Gaul, has encountered a dying rabbi on a road outside of Jerusalem. With his final breaths, the old man urgently tells Evardus that Jewish priests have spirited sacred objects and records away from Herod's Temple in the hope of keeping them out of the hands of Roman soldiers--who are, at that very moment, attacking Jerusalem and destroying the Jews' most holy site. The merchant learns of a copper scroll hidden beneath the Holy of Holies and a map that leads to the holy objects. A thousand years later, while on a Crusade to Palestine, a descendant of the merchant finally uncovers those secrets below the temple. They include an astonishing parchment that threatens the very foundations of the Church and Christianity. The grand master of the Templars develops a scheme to advance the interests of his order, but the plan has devastating consequences. The parchment survives, however, and for nearly a millennium remains hidden in plain sight. With the dawning of the twenty-first century and pivotal world events, two American professors discover the document while researching a book. Like those before, they are tempted to use it for their own purposes. The course they pursue leads to unforeseen consequences that affect events in the Middle East and a crucial turning point for the Vatican. Gerald McLaughlin shows us a rich, haunting tableau that spans two thousand years. We are given a timely glimpse into the often-disastrous ways that we tend to deal with faith when confronted by fear and ambition, and how moral choices are made in the face of the continuing battle between good and evil--both in ourselves and in the world. Ultimately, the author shines a light of profound hope and faith into the darkest recesses of the human soul, our modern life, and world events.
