A BAND AT SEA "Before you say you're going to leave this band, before you say that playing covers is musical prostitution, before you say that every creative cell in your body has been destroyed by our 80s medley of Bros and A-Ha songs, before you say you hate our choice of tunes so much that you're tempted to not listen to another piece of music ever again, before you say you'd rather be dead than play another 50th birthday party gig...don't forget: this band is all you have." Alex. 41. He's lost his flat, his girlfriend, his parents and his dignity. Still, at least he's got his bandmates, yes? It's just a shame one of them doesn't talk and the other one has forced them to play a six-month residency in the middle of the sea. A fast-paced comedic tale about ambition, love and why being in a band is the greatest thing ever. Contains plenty of swear words. and... HAVE YOURSELF A RIDICULOUS LITTLE CHRISTMAS Robert, a struggling mid-management executive really, really gets excited by the magic of Christmas. His wife no longer loves him, his favourite (adopted) uncle has died and a man he was in charge of has been eaten by a fox at a conference in Banbury. Still, by Christmas Day, everything will be fine, yeah? A delightful, warm, short festive tale about the tingling sensations of all things Yuletide. It does contain a little swearing, but not too much. Basically, it's really lovely but not a fairytale or anything, so not for the kids, and Paul wrote it in 2014 so it does reference the Queen's speech and the iPhone 6.

Download or read book Ebola written by Paul Richards and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Fage and Oliver Prize 2018 From December 2013, the largest Ebola outbreak in history swept across West Africa, claiming thousands of lives in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. By the middle of 2014, the international community was gripped by hysteria. Experts grimly predicted that millions would be infected within months, and a huge international control effort was mounted to contain the virus. Yet paradoxically, by this point the disease was already going into decline in Africa itself. So why did outside observers get it so wrong? Paul Richards draws on his extensive first-hand experience in Sierra Leone to argue that the international community’s panicky response failed to take account of local expertise and common sense. Crucially, Richards shows that the humanitarian response to the disease was most effective in those areas where it supported these initiatives and that it hampered recovery when it ignored or disregarded local knowledge.

Book Synopsis Short-Lived Television Series, 1948-1978 by : Wesley Hyatt
Download or read book Short-Lived Television Series, 1948-1978 written by Wesley Hyatt and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you remember the 1959 game show where ABC cancelled a tape featuring a female impersonator (Across the Board)? Ever heard of Snip, the 1976 sitcom starring David Brenner that NBC canned just before it debuted? Almost everyone who has worked on a successful television series has also been on one that flopped. Even during the first thirty years of broadcasting, when NBC, CBS, and ABC were the only networks and not quite so quick to cancel unsuccessful programs, hundreds of shows lasted less than one year. This work tells the stories of those ill-fated series that were cancelled within one year after their premieres. The entries are arranged chronologically from the 1948-1949 through the 1977-1978 seasons, and provide brief descriptions of the shows along with such facts as the type of program each series was; its times, dates, and network; its competition on other networks; and the names of the cast, producer, director and writer. The book also includes information from more than 100 interviews with actors, writers, directors, and producers who worked on the short-lived television series.

Book Synopsis The State, Identity and Violence by : R. Brian Ferguson
Download or read book The State, Identity and Violence written by R. Brian Ferguson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a collection of experts investigate the varied forces - from global systems to local beliefs - that lead to civil violence, chaos and, perhaps, a new political order. The State, Identity and Violence explores acts of mass violence occurring within national borders and examines the links such acts have to personal identities and how they challenge the character or very existence of the state. Building upon the anthropological premises of holism and cross-cultural comparison, this volume shows how violent challenges to existing states should be conceptualized as layered problems, with multiple kinds of causes. It not only goes beyond the "ancient hatreds" explanation, but shows the inadequacy of the concept of "ethnic violence" and of theories which treat interests and identities as separate, sometimes opposed variables
