Book excerpt: After barely surviving a barrage of ultra-violence and being burned by those closest to them in 2 GUNS, the lives of ex-undercover agents Bobby Trench and Marcus Steadman get even more chaotic when the pair again cross paths in the pages of 3 GUNS, writer Steven Grant's follow-up to his 2006 crime caper. Now, after racing headlong across the Southwest, desperately outrunning Feds and mobsters alike while trying to clear their names, Trench and Steadman are pulled into another impossible situation: brokering gun deals between the Russians and anti-government revolutionaries...from opposite sides. And little do they know, a Third Gun has her eyes set on the ultimate prize--and she won’t go down without a fight.

And what Trench doesn't know is that Steadman's a Naval Intelligence officer. They're both cops! And neither one knows that they're not robbing the mob, they've been set up to steal $50 million from the CIA! Book excerpt: I first became aware of the town of Two Guns, Arizona in the summer of 2001 while on the tail end of a cross-country road trip. Driving through Arizona with the lovely lady who would later become my wife, we motored along the remains of Route 66, heading for home in California, when she said "that would make a great title for a book." I followed her gaze to a battered road sign, complete with a full patina of desert dust and the requisite bullet holes, and it read "Two Guns" and below it in slightly smaller white lettering "1 mile." I immediately thought of a couple of plot lines for which the title would be perfect, but I didn't think I could get a whole book out of it. Instead, I tried a few times over the years to put it in as the title of a short story, but kept on changing it for the final draft. I didn't want to use it up. Then, after researching the history of Two Guns, I realized that this title contained not just one story, but several. As has been true so many times throughout our nearly 20 years of marriage thus far, she was absolutely right the first time: it had to be a book. Two Guns, 1 Mile is a collection of original short fiction and historical fiction. The titles "Dual," "Sunset (fade to black)," "Extra Terrestrials," and "Two Guns, One Smile" contain only original fictional characters and fictional events. Any resemblance to actual events or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Other stories, including "Sharp," and "Smoke" contain only original fictional characters, but also include details from real events. For the purpose of the stories, I condensed some of the historical events, omitting details that were not relevant to the plot, but without altering the reported facts. The remaining stories in this collection, including "One Last Round," "The Whore War," "Trading Post," and "Upon the Rock of Our Redeemer" are fictionalized accountings of reported events. In "One Last Round," and "The Whore War," the events play out as described by reported facts, with the exception that Bill Duckin was not reported to have been in Clabberfoot Annie's brothel on the night in question. However, as their times in Canyon Diablo are reported to have overlapped, his presence there, and in the capacity as I described it, would not have been out of the question or out of character for the man. As for "Trading Post" and "Upon the Rock of Our Redeemer," the characters of Earle Cundiff and Adolph Cannon were respectively reported to be the owner of the Canyon Lodge (Two Guns) Trading Post, and a prospector of meteoric diamonds. Their roles within these works are entirely fictional, though my descriptions of them do abide by the generally known facts of their lives. Cundiff was shot and killed by Harry E. (Indian) Miller on March 3, 1926, and Cannon was reported to wander the desert between Winslow and Flagstaff over a period of several decades collecting diamonds that had supposedly been deposited there by the impact at what is now known as Meteor Crater. However, the dialogue and actions of these characters in their stories have no factual basis.Whenever possible, I have tried to keep to the facts of the historical events exactly as they have been reported in multiple sources. However, the stories contained in this book are works of fiction and are meant only to entertain. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Book excerpt: The Silent Guns of Two Octobers uses new as well as previously under-appreciated documentary evidence to link the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Checkpoint Charlie tank standoff to achieve the impossible—craft a new, thoughtful, original analysis of a political showdown everyone thought they knew everything about. Ultimately the book concludes that much of the Cold War rhetoric the leaders employed was mere posturing; in reality neither had any intention of starting a nuclear war. Theodore Voorhees reexamines Khrushchev’s and Kennedy’s leadership, decision, and rhetoric in light of the new documentary evidence available. Voorhees examines the impact of John F. Kennedy's domestic political concerns about his upcoming first midterm elections on his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis through his use of back-channel dealings with Khrushchev during the lead-up to the crisis and in the closing days when the two leaders managed to reach a settlement.

Book excerpt: Among the many writers who lent their talents to the creation of hard-boiled detective fiction, few have approached it from a more original perspective than Chester Himes. A former criminal himself, Himes brought to the writing of detective fiction the perspective of the black man. Himes made his debut with the brilliant For Love of Imabelle, for which he was awarded the coveted Grand Prix de la Littérature Policière. Two Guns from Harlem probes Himes's early life and career for the roots of this series and for its heroes, Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones. Skinner discusses how Himes's experience as a black man, combined with his unique outlook on sociology, politics, violence, sex, and race relations, resulted not only in an unusual portrait of black America but also opened the way for the creation of the ethnic and female hard-boiled detectives who followed.

Book excerpt: Thom Hartmann, the most popular progressive radio host in America and a New York Times bestselling author, looks at the real history of guns in America and what we can do to limit both their lethal impact and the power of the gun lobby. Taking his typically in-depth, historically informed view, Thom Hartmann examines the brutal role guns have played in American history, from the genocide of the Native Americans to the enforcement of slavery (Slave Patrols are in fact the Second Amendment's “well-regulated militias”) and the racist post–Civil War social order. He shows how the NRA and conservative Supreme Court justices used specious logic to invent a virtually unlimited individual right to own guns, which has enabled the ever-growing number of mass shootings in the United States. But Hartmann also identifies a handful of powerful, commonsense solutions that would break the power of the gun lobby and restore the understanding of the Second Amendment that the Framers of the Constitution intended. This is the kind of brief, brilliant analysis for which Hartmann is justly renowned.

Book excerpt: It is the twentieth century's unrivaled epic: at a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his bestselling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted how they fought through North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all--the titanic battle for Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the European war's final campaign, and Atkinson's riveting account of that bold gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows. The brutal fight in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the disaster that was Operation Market Garden, the horrific Battle of the Bulge, and finally the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich--all these historic events and more come alive with a wealth of new material and a mesmerizing cast of characters. With The Guns at Last Light, the stirring #1 New York Times bestseller and final volume of this monumental trilogy, Atkinson has produced the definitive chronicle of the war that unshackled a continent and preserved freedom in the West.

Book excerpt: In a world where safety is a luxury and honor is found only among outlaws, two people attempt to outrun dangers lurking around each corner and the tragedies that define them. Bonnie is an outlaw on the run. Beautiful but dangerous; her dark past stalks her like the crater beasts that roam the desert. As the notoriously cruel outlaw Jones sends his henchmen to track her down and retrieve the gun she stole from him, Bonnie hopes she can stay one step ahead. Because if he catches her, a fate worse than death awaits. Jesse always dreamed of leaving the farm to explore the ruins of the big cities he'd heard about his whole life. He just never imagined he'd be forced to flee after strange men burned down his rural mountain town and murdered everyone he loved. Responsible for his kid brother and searching for an uncle he's never met before, he isn't sure he can navigate the perils of life among con artists and thieves long enough to find him. Their two paths collide as they find themselves thrown together on the adventure of a lifetime. Together, they may just discover that life is about more than just surviving. TRIGGER WARNINGS: This book contains depictions of graphic violence, language, sexual violence, attempted rape, depictions of child abuse, and depictions of human trafficking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneers of Armour in the Great War tells the story of the only Australian mechanized units of the Great War. The 1st Australian Armoured Car Section, later the 1st Australian Light Car Patrol, and the Special Tank Section were among the trailblazers of mechanization and represented the cutting edge of technology on the Great War battlefield.The1st Armoured Car Section was raised in Melbourne in 1916, the brainchild of a group of enthusiasts who financed, designed and then built two armored cars. Having persuaded the Australian Army of the vehicles' utility in the desert campaign, the armored car section, later re-equipped with Model T Fords and retitled the 1st Australian Light Car Patrol, provided valuable service until well after the Armistice. The First World War also saw the emergence of the tank which, despite unpromising beginnings, was to realize its potential in the crucial 1918 battles of Hamel and Amiens. A British Mark IV tank which toured Australia in 1918 demonstrated the power of this new weapon to an awestruck Australian public.Much of the story of the armored cars is told in the voices of the original members of the section and in newspaper articles of the time which highlight the novelty of these vehicles. Painstaking research has produced a remarkable collection of images to accompany the narrative, many never previously published. Biographies of the members of these extraordinary units are also a feature of this book, their stories told from the cradle to the grave. Appendixes provide a wealth of supporting biographical and technical information that enriches the text and adds factual detail.
