Book excerpt: In an opposed-jet diffusion flame experiment, under certain conditions, after the extinction of the diffusion flame, an edge flame can be obtained. It was reported recently in a numerical and an experimental work and is responsible for an interesting transition between two distinct burning flames (multiple solutions). Motivated by our previous numerical results, obtained with simplified kinetics and some recently reported experimental data, we performed direct numerical simulations of this transition to investigate the underlying physical mechanisms. The appearance of an edge flame after the extinction of the diffusion flame, the hysteresis reported in the experiments, and the existence of multiple vigorously burning flames at identical conditions are all captured by our simulations. Our numerical results show that, in the absence of an inert coflow curtain, when the diffusion flame disk is extinguished, an edge flame forms and propagates in the mixing layer. After the formation of this edge flame, even when the applied strain rate is reduced to the initial subcritical value, the diffusion flame disk does not reappear, because the local fluid velocity still exceeds the propagation speed of the edge flame. This hysteresis has significant implications in the common submodel that utilizes the strain rate as a parameter to determine local reignition in flamelet models; it indicates that a subcritical strain rate is not a sufficient condition for the reignition of a diffusion flame. Further investigation of this phenomenon is clearly needed to refine submodels of local extinction and reignition in the flamelet models for turbulent diffusion flames. The opposed-jet configuration provides a convenient platform to analyze edge flames which are stabilized aerodynamically in a two-dimensional geometry, thus making matching two-dimensional direct numerical simulations effective.

Book excerpt: The properties of turbulent premixed flames were investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Attention was limited to hydrogen/air mixtures burning as either turbulent jet flames or a freely propagating flames in isotropic turbulence. The research has application to a variety to premixed turbulent combustion processes: underwater metal cutting at great depth, primary combustors for high-speed airbreathing propulsion systems, afterburners, fuel/ air explosions, and spark-ignition internal combustion engines. Major findings of this phase of the investigation are as follows: (1) effects of preferential diffusion are relevent for flames at high Reynolds number, retarding and enhancing the distortion of the flame surface by turbulence for stable and unstable conditions, respectively; (2) local turbulent burning velocity, flame brush thickness and the fractal dimension of the flame surface all increase with distance from the flameholder, with larger rates of increases at larger turbulence intensities; (3) estimates of flame properties using contemporary turbulence models were only fair because these methods cannot account for effects of preferential diffusion, distance from the flameholder and finite laminar flame speeds; and (4) the stochastic simulation duplicated measured trends of flame surface properties for neutral preferential diffusion conditions (the only case considered) but underestimated effects of turbulence (particularly near the flame tip) due to the limitations of a two-dimensional simulation.

Book excerpt: In this paper, direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of an opposed-jet hydrogen/air diffusion flame are in a postprocessing step, analyzed using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique. The aim of this work is twofold. The first goal is to compute a small number of space-dependent empirical eigenfunctions, so that a low-dimensional representation of the data generated by the large model of the discretized partial differential equations can be obtained using a weighted sum of these few eigenfunctions (POD modes). It is found that only six modes are needed for an accurate representation of the data in an extended range of inflow velocities. This large data reduction takes into account not only chemical kinetics but also transport phenomena in a full two-dimensional context and constitutes the first step toward the construction of low-dimensional dynamic models for the opposed-jet system. It is also found that the PODs have very good interpolatory properties. The second goal is to use part of the available data (i.e., partial measurements), together with the computed modes, to estimate, or, in the terminology of process control, to observe, the "unmeasured" quantities. It is found that only a small number of measurements are needed to obtain accurate estimates of the rest of the data.
