And while she’s teaching the locals culinary craft, her grandmother is teaching her witchcraft for the day she inherits the family magical spells that have been passed down for generations. But even though Dorian hasn’t yet left this earthly plane, his spells have already been transferred to his daughter Cindy’s grimoire. An actress looking for her big Hollywood break, Cindy is hoping there’s something in her father’s bag of tricks to make her a star. But playing with magic has only resulted in a trip to Idaho where Cindy finds herself the number one suspect in the murder of a hitman whose body was found in the garden of Mia’s Morsels. Now it’s up to Mia to conjure up a killer before everything she’s worked so hard for vanishes with a poof! Includes Recipes! Now, she is lonely, devastated, orphaned . . . seeking solace in a place where the sun never sets and trying to make sense of the dark tragedy that clouds her shattered heart. There are no coincidences. . . . Deep-sea fisherman Chance Taylor can’t imagine what his life would be if he’d never taken that midnight stroll to the pier. Had never seen the intriguing, raven-haired girl swan dive into the Alaskan sea. Had never plunged into the icy waters to rescue her . . . and finally felt her electric charge. As their blazing chemistry consumes them, Chance is determined to save Brooke from her demons. But Brooke knows she must find her own footing. She thinks she’s already lost everything—until the terror of her past catches up with her and threatens all that she has left: her life, her love, and the freedom to choose between drowning in grief and finding joy in the darkness.

Book excerpt: A detective looks into the death of her ex-boyfriend: “The most interesting private eye I’ve encountered since Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander.” —The Washington Post When Claire DeWitt’s ex-boyfriend Paul Casablancas, a musician, is found dead in his Mission District house, Claire is on the case. Paul’s wife and the police are sure Paul was killed for his valuable collection of vintage guitars. But Claire, the best detective in the world, has other ideas. Even as her other cases offer hints to Paul’s fate—a missing girl in the grim East Village of the 1980s and an epidemic of missing miniature horses in Marin County-–Claire knows: the truth is never where you expect it, and love is the greatest mystery of all. The follow-up to the Macavity Award winner Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead, this intense and unusual crime novel comes from “a distinctive new voice in mystery fiction” (NPR’s Fresh Air). “Drug-taking, tarot-reading San Francisco detective Claire DeWitt is back . . . Claire is terrific at getting to the bottom of other people’s problems but not so good at dealing with her own. But that’s the peculiar charm of this punky sleuth and her offbeat entourage.” —Booklist “[A] mesmerizing character.” —New Orleans Times-Picayune “The Claire DeWitt novels are not so much noir mysteries as stories about the nature of mysteries themselves. The stories are wise, chilling, insightful and reeking with despair—and yet so beautifully written in an original, quirky style that it is difficult to resist them.” —Associated Press

[in] one beast of a story” (The Guardian, UK). International bestselling author Christopher Brookmyre has been lauded for his dark sense of humor and brilliant suspense plotting. Now his Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize–winning novel follows “his most ambitious heroine yet”: a forty-six-year-old house-proud grandmother (The Guardian, UK). As a teenager, Jane Bell had dreamt of playing in the casinos of Monte Carlo, surrounded by the likes of James Bond. But now her dreams are as dry as the dust her Dyson sucks up from her hall carpet. Her son Ross, a researcher for a Swiss arms manufacturer, is the one with the exciting life. But lately it’s gotten a bit too exciting. Ross needs to disappear before some shady characters force him to divulge the secrets of his research. And they’re not the only ones desperate to locate him. Ross’s firm has hired a team of security experts, and, headed by the enigmatic Bett, they have little in common apart from total professionalism and a thorough disregard for the law. Bett believes the key to Ross’s whereabouts is his mother, and in one respect, he is right. But even he is taken aback by her dogged determination to secure her son’s safety. The teenage dreams of fast cars, high-tech firepower, and extreme action had always promised to be fun and games, but in real life, it’s likely someone is going to lose an eye . . . “Funny, electric and captivating.” —Times (UK)

Book excerpt: I am a recent ex prisoner. My Nightmare is about a two year period in which my life was ripped away from me, my family destroyed and relationships ruined all because the police couldn't do their job properly and destroyed everything I had. I was never guilty but may also not have been able prove my innocence. This is a moot point as I chose (for very personal reasons) to plead guilty and protect my loved ones from further anguish and stress. This resulted in a normal everyday person with a beautiful wife and family, good job and a bright and secure future becoming the bitter manic depressive with suicidal tendencies that now writes this book. I have no love of the police anymore, nor for the law in general though I have no intention of doing anything stupid because of my views. Putting this book together, I hope, allows people, to see what I went through, to pray it never happens to them and helps to ease (if only slightly) the solitary and extremely lonely life I now choose to lead (if I cant have my family, I want nothing else). Thank you for taking the time to walk this journey with me.
