Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years of School and College English The papers in this pamphlet are republished as a contribution to the discussion provoked by the reports which were presented in 1892 and 1895 to the Board of Overseers of Harvard College by the Committee on Composition and Rhetoric. Each paper was written independently; the author of each was, at the time of writing, charged with the duty of reading the examination books in English produced by candidates for admission to Harvard College. The first paper, Oopies of which were sent by the College authorities to the masters of over two hundred and twenty schools, was published only five years after an examination in English composition was for the first time prescribed for admission the last, after examinations in that subject had been going on for nearly twenty years. Taken together, the five papers show a remarkable agreement both in facts and in inferences and both facts and inferences tend to sustain the general conclusion reached on independent grounds by the Committee of the Board of Overseers - the conclusion that the Secondary Schools need to pay more attention to English. The first paper was originally published in Good Company (springfield, Mass), Vol. Iv, No. 3, 1879; the second, in 'the Academy (syracuse, N. September, 1888 the third, in The Academy, September, 1890 the fourth, in The Academy, October, 1891; the fifth, in The Academy, June, 1892. The articles from The Academy are reprinted with the kind permission of Mr. Bacon, the editor of the magazine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years in an English University I write this book for three reasons: First, very little is accurately known in this country about the English Universities. Secondly, most of what we hear respecting those institutions, comes through the medium of popular novels and other light literature, frequently written by non-University men, and almost always conveying an erroneous and unfavorable idea of the Universities. Thirdly and principally, there are points in an English education which may be studied with profit, and from which we may draw valuable hints. Few Americans have the opportunity of growing up into manhood among half a generation of the most highly educated class in England; nor is it indeed altogether desirable that many should have. I myself owed it to an accident. There are few persons among us qualified by their knowledge of the subject to do it justice. Had I ever seen even a decent review article on English University education, this book would not have been written. It has been my object to give a picture of English University life just as it is; to do which correctly, I have been obliged to mingle gaieties and gravities. Should the reader not assent to my conclusions, he will at any rate have a tolerable idea of the facts. The same motive - a desire to depict accurately what I saw and experienced, and the impressions which such a life makes on an American - has obliged me to speak of myself more frequently than is altogether pleasant for either reader or author. Of the bad arrangement and want of system displayed in the book, I am as conscious as the severest critic can be. These faults must be attributed to want of ability, not want of care. To deal with the minutiae of a system so complicated as that of several independent Colleges combined in one University - rejecting what is unimportant, and lucidly setting forth what is worthy of remark - becomes an extremely difficult task where everything is so different from the corresponding arrangements among ourselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Days: Or Harry's Career at Yale The author's object in this story of College Days is to give a pictureof student life as it was twenty years ago. The Yale of today is more cultured, less democratic, less boyish than in the Seventies. In this story the public student life has been treated rather than the private life, and it may be added that the period cov ered was the close of what has been termed Yale's barbaric era. The attitude of students to the faculty and to one another, the relations of classes, have all materially altered for the better these latter years. The student enters college at a more advanced age, feels himself much more of a man, has already experienced some of the delights of secret societies at Exeter or Andover, and is alto gether about as experienced as a junior in the old days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Days and College Life I have spoken in public on numerous occasions and before many different kinds of audiences, but no audience has inspired me so much, nor have I felt so much in sympathy with my hearers, nor have I spoken so well as when addressing large bodies of boys or young men. Just why this is so may not be easy to explain, but one thing is clear to me, and that is that the faces of the boys and young men show more earnestness of purpose, more unselfishness and more trustfulness than the average faces of older persons. It is disheartening to think that every one of the older faces that are less inspiring belongs to one who was once young. What has caused the change? To answer this question fully would involve the explanation of all the mysteries of life, mind, body and spirit; but you will agree with me that much of the failure can be laid at the door of school and college. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, the Class of 1876: Seventh Report of the Secretary, Covering the Class History for Twenty-Five Years to 1901 Entering only three years after the accession of President Eliot, we found his energy at work building a new superstructure upon the old foundation. During Freshman year we were per mitted to pursue our required studies with our minds unfretted by the necessity of choosing for ourselves, but the three succeeding years com pelled us to get out of leading strings. We were given a broad choice of elective studies; our at tendance at our courses was made voluntary. As is well known, this liberal system has, with cer tain wise regulations, been made still more lib eral, and its principles have, through the changes in the entrance requirements, been extended into the secondary schools. The general principle has been adopted by the College that a Bachelor's de gree is necessary for admission to all professional courses of study. This makes it important that the conditions for admission to the College or Scientific School shall be liberally conceived. Mr. W. C. Lane, in the Report of the Class of says: The requirements of 1881 al low the substitution in the place of Greek of a considerable amount of scientific study, including some advanced mathematics, but do not al low the substitution of any modern language or of history. Japanese students may substitute an examination in the Japanese language and litera ture for English, in the Chinese language and literature for elementary Greek, and in English for elementary Latin; while students and grad nates of the Imperial University of Japan might be admitted without examination. Our young Roman of the East, the Japanese, as well as his American fellow-student, can, if he chooses, do the work required for a degree in three years. Some of the old leisure classes took five or six years in their pursuit of an ever evading degree. It is even planned to have two Commencements a year. Since the prohibition of rum punch, two such days may safely be per mitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. The question is too delicate to be answered. Dates are invidious when the hair turns gray, and middle age trespasses on old. Let me say "twenty years ago." I care not to be punctilious in my treatment of time, when time takes such liberties with myself. - How changed is Oxford since '45! The Dr. Aorisis, and Very Reverend Greek Particles, who animated Oxford in my day, have given place to a new class of men, not less Greek, but more decidedly Anglican. Scholarship is rife as it ever was, but churchism is much more developed. In my day, few men thought of churchism, save as the science of good livings; now good livings are subordinate to churchism; at least, the sciences are separate. It would not do for a Cuddesden aspirant to confess to the head of his seminary that he entered Orders to take a good living. It might be true; but he would speak of the questionable motive in the arcana of trustful communication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
