Book excerpt: This practical guide for flautists provides a survey of the instrument - its development, its technique, its repertoire and its literature - between 1700 and 1900. Each issue is set in a musical context and technical and stylistic matters such as fingering, tone production, articulation, ornamentation, vibrato, expression and delivery are examined in depth, applying evidence from historical sources to the standard flute repertoire. A series of case studies offers detailed interpretations of music by Hotteterre, Handel, Bach, Gluck, Mozart and Boehm. As an internationally recognised soloist, orchestral player and teacher of modern and historical flutes, Rachel Brown brings a wealth of experience to amateurs and professionals alike, encouraging stylistic awareness through an understanding of the way in which composers and flautists approached instruments of the past. Copious music examples, illustrations, fingering charts and bibliographies make this a standard reference book for both 'period' and modern flautists.

Book excerpt: Charles Wuorinen: A Bio-Bibliography is a chronicle, a lexicon, a manual, a narrative, and a testament to the life and work of an American musical genius. The work contains a biography, discography, interview, comprehensive listing of works and detailed roster of performances, and almost 1,200 annotated citations of writings about the music of this important composer. The oral history component--the interview--is the foundation of the book in that it expresses the composer's philosophy of music and of life and serves as a contrast to the many annotations featuring critical commentary on his music. No one even remotely connected with contemporary music and the arguments and discussions thereof should be without this book.

Book excerpt: This volume showcases selected conference papers addressing the sustainable future of ASEAN from the perspectives of business and social science disciplines. In addressing the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) envisioned by the United Nations in the domains of environment, health and well-being, posing potential means of reducing inequalities globally, the authors target specific issues and challenges confronting the fast-growing region of ASEAN and present suggestions for co-operation and commitment from governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and society at large, in line with the ASEAN Vision 2020. Papers are selected from the 3rd International Conference on the Future of ASEAN (ICoFA) 2019, organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, whose conference theme “Charting the Sustainable Future of ASEAN” enables intellectual discourse on sustainability issues from business and the social sciences, as well as science and technology. The selection of papers is published in two volumes, comprising scholarly and practical insights into sustainability in ASEAN. This first volume of papers from business and social science scholars will be of interest to researchers and policymakers interested in sustainability developments in the ASEAN region.

Book excerpt: This document presents selections from Germaine Tailleferre's chamber music for flute, and, through the discussion of her compositions for the flute (Forlane, Pastorale, and Concertino,) will present a performance guide with techniques that can be applied to French flute music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This document will also discuss Tailleferre's place among the French composers' collective known as Les Six and her compositional influences from Erik Satie, Dadaism, and neoclassic music. The compositional ideals espoused by Les Six, including simplicity and clarity of texture, were a manifestation of a growing contempt for German culture following the Great War. This aesthetic can be seen throughout Tailleferre's compositions and will be highlighted as a component of her flute compositions. Also considered is Tailleferre's score written in 1957 to accompany a film by Israeli filmmaker David Perlov, titled Tante Chinoise et les autres. I will draw comparisons between the music of the score and the visual elements of the film through the use of short excerpts transcribed from the score and pictures of the artwork that comprise the film.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the development and performance of extended flute techniques since Berio's Sequenza of 1958 to 2001. The project considers the unprecedented expansion of flute techniques since the Sequenza and the profound impact this has had on performance practice in new music composed for the flute. It addresses a number of critical issues faced by flautists in the absence of a standardised pedagogy and inconsistency of notation, and explores the role of the performer as a contributor in the performance of new music. The submission takes the form of four compact disc recordings of repertoire chosen from a wide timeframe, beginning with Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune of 1894 and moving through to Daniel Börtz's Tinted Paintings in 2001. The repertoire was selected in order to highlight and explore problems encountered when performing extended techniques, and to demonstrate the ways in which various extended techniques are used by composers. In so doing the study brings into focus important issues of modern flute performance practice, and suggests possible strategies for addressing various technical and interpretative challenges.
