Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Second Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, Vol. 2 of 2: To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1900-1901 My collaborator in the present work has been Mr James R Murie, an educated Pawnee whom I have known since he was a school boy, twenty years ago. Mr Murie has taken up the task of preserving the ancient lore of his people, and he has not spared himself in his labor. How difficult his undertaking has been, and still is, can only be appreciated by those who have attempted to accomplish a similar work. His patience, tact, and unfailing courtesy and kindness have soothed the prejudice and allayed the fears of the old men who hold fast to the faith of their fathers and are the repositories of all that remains of the ancient rites of the tribe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1899-1900 The Hopi Indians represent their gods in several ways, one of which is by personation - by wearing masks or garments bearing symbols that are regarded as characteristic of those beings. The sym bols depicted on these masks and garments vary considerably, but are readily recognized and identified by the Indians. At each festival in which these supernatural beings are personated the symbols are repainted, and continued practice has led to a high development of this kind of artistic work, many Of the Indians having become expert in painting the symbols characteristic of the gods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1910-1911 To form an impartial and correct judgment of the moral tone of the myths and legends of the American Indian, a distinction must be made between myths and legends on the one hand and tales and stories which are related primarily for the indecent coarseness of their thought and diction on the other; for herein lies the line of demarcation between narratives in which the rare casual references to indelicate matters are wholly a secondary consideration and not the motives of the stories, and those ribald tales in which the evident motive is merely to pander to depraved taste by detailing the coarse, the vulgar, and the filthy in life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Sixth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology: To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1914-1915 The operations of the Bureau of American Ethnology during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1915, were conducted in accordance with the act of Congress approved August 1, 1914, making appropriations for sundry civil expenses of the Government, which act contains the following item: American ethnology: For continuing ethnological researches among the American Indians and the natives of Hawaii, including the excavation and preservation of archeologic remains, under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, including salaries or compensation of all necessary employees and the purchase of necessary books and periodicals, including payment in advance for subscriptions, forty-two thousand dollars. Systematic Researches As in the past, the systematic researches of the bureau were conducted by its regular staff, consisting of 9 ethnologists, including the ethnologist-in-charge, and of 10 ethnologists during part of the year. These operations may be summarized as follows: Mr. F. W. Hodge, ethnologist-in-charge, devoted most of his attention during the year to the administration of the affairs of the bureau, but opportunity was found, with the assistance of Miss Florence M. Poast, to add materially to the compilation of the bibliography of the Pueblo Indians, which now comprises about 2,400 titles.
