Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is of especial interest to students of early Judaism and Christianity, though this importance is not always recognized. This collection preserves extra-biblical traditions about the sons of Jacob, it reflects a moral worldview of Jews and Christians around the turn of the era, and it casts light on its authors' eschatological imagination. Robert A. Kugler introduces the student to the Testaments' contents, their relationship to other texts of the era, textual witnesses and sources, and rehearses the debate regarding authorship, compositional history and purpose. He also examines the Testaments from the fresh perspective of rhetorical strategy, asking what sort of theological notions the Testaments would have conjured in the minds of early Jewish and Christian listeners or readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples, whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Join bestselling author John MacArthur in Twelve Ordinary Men as he draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original disciples for today's modern disciple, you! Jesus chose ordinary men--fishermen, tax collectors, political zealots--and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from people who were otherwise unremarkable. The twelve disciples weren't the stained-glass saints we imagine. On the contrary, they were truly human, all too prone to mistakes, misstatements, wrong attitudes, lapses of faith, and bitter failure. Simply put, they were flawed people, just like us. But under Jesus' teaching and touch, they became a force that forever changed the world. MacArthur takes you into the inner circle of the disciples--their selection, their training, their personalities, and their incredible impact. As MacArthur took a closer look at the lives of the twelve disciples, he found himself asking difficult questions along the way, including: Why did Jesus pick each of the twelve disciples? How did Jesus teach them everything he could in just eighteen short months? Can the lessons that Jesus taught the disciples can still influence our faith today? In Twelve Ordinary Men, you'll learn that disciples are living proof that God's strength is made perfect in weakness. As you get to know the men who walked with Jesus, you'll see that if he can accomplish his purposes through them, he can do the same through you.

Book excerpt: In the popular literature and scholarship of the Civil War, the days immediately after the surrender at Fort Sumter are overshadowed by the great battles and seismic changes in American life that followed. The twelve days that began with the federal evacuation of the fort and ended with the arrival of the New York Seventh Militia Regiment in Washington were critically important. The nation's capital never again came so close to being captured by the Confederates. Tony Silber's riveting account starts on April 14, 1861, with President Lincoln's call for seventy-five thousand militia troops. Washington, a Southern slaveholding city, was the focal point: both sides expected the first clash to occur there. The capital was barely defended, by about two thousand local militia troops of dubious training and loyalty. In Charleston, less than two days away by train, the Confederates had an organized army that was much larger and ready to fight. Maryland's eastern sections were already reeling in violent insurrection, and within days Virginia would secede. For half of the twelve days after Fort Sumter, Washington was severed from the North, the telegraph lines cut and the rail lines impassable, sabotaged by secessionist police and militia members. There was no cavalry coming. The United States had a tiny standing army at the time, most of it scattered west of the Mississippi. The federal government's only defense would be state militias. But in state after state, the militia system was in tatters. Southern leaders urged an assault on Washington. A Confederate success in capturing Washington would have changed the course of the Civil War. It likely would have assured the secession of Maryland. It might have resulted in England's recognition of the Confederacy. It would have demoralized the North. Fortunately, none of this happened. Instead, Lincoln emerged as the master of his cabinet, a communications genius, and a strategic giant who possessed a crystal-clear core objective and a powerful commitment to see it through. Told in real time, Twelve Days alternates between the four main scenes of action: Washington, insurrectionist Maryland, the advance of Northern troops, and the Confederate planning and military movements. Twelve Days tells for the first time the entire harrowing story of the first days of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: The Reign of Terror continues to fascinate scholars as one of the bloodiest periods in French history, when the Committee of Public Safety strove to defend the first Republic from its many enemies, creating a climate of fear and suspicion in revolutionary France. R. R. Palmer's fascinating narrative follows the Committee's deputies individually and collectively, recounting and assessing their tumultuous struggles in Paris and their repressive missions in the provinces. A foreword by Isser Woloch explains why this book remains an enduring classic in French revolutionary studies.

Twelve acts to uncover the truth. “...and born of my torment, a plan conceived: daring, dastardly, and a touch divine, a frantic clutch at fate’s unruly ruffs, that the great black hole of despair might not swallow me whole.” Twelve years after his disappearance, Jack Sutton is spotted jogging through a park. Tortured by questions of Jack's unknown fate, Camden Slade’s anguish takes a turn for the reckless, and she conceives a plan to discover what happened to him. With the help of two friends and a hired gun, Camden sets her strategy in motion, a plan that requires her full arsenal of skills as a fraud examiner and turns the tables in her favor. When things start to fall apart, Camden finds herself scrambling to avoid detection and hide her wrongdoings. She is finally able to ask the long-awaited questions of her heart, but is she prepared for the answers she receives or to face the soul-altering savagery of what she has done? “I highly recommend this novel for its edgy anticipation, compelling characters, and a winding path of justice. Woven within this excellently written book are humor and intense love. The mysterious stages play out in fascinating and unpredictable ways. The plot unfolds while characters come to live in your heart as deeper meanings to life develop.” —Readers' Favorite

Not so typical is Joe’s prosthetic leg, which he’s had since the car crash two years ago that killed his father and left him with a burning desire to rid the world of automobiles. The object of Joe’s affections, Jun Song, is a year behind Joe in school, yet way ahead of him in smarts. When Jun is brutally attacked on her way home one day, her already-protective mother shifts into overdrive, making it virtually impossible for Jun and Joe to see each other. But Joe’s into Jun in a big way, and he needs her ginormous brain to make his dream a reality. Giving up is not an option. Joe signs up for the “Science Team ExtreMe” competition, which, as luck would have it, is the perfect way to be with Jun while progressing his ideas for an automated, planet-wide monorail system. Joe enlists former enemy Praveen and new friends Sam and Zoey to begin the design until Jun comes on board and the work really gets started. Now the only things standing between Joe and his dream are Jun’s mom, team drama, PTSD, archaic competition rules, seemingly impossible feats of engineering, and a plague of self-doubts. No problem. Danielle Peterson is a graphic designer, orchestral flutist, and open/champion level Irish dancer who lives in Arizona.

Book excerpt: These final chapters in the book of Genesis describe for us the character and personalities of the twelve sons of Jacob. I don't think I'm being overly dramatic when I say: these twelve sons were the future of the world. From these twelve sons and their sons and daughters, and their sons and daughters, and their sons and daughters... would come the leaders and sustainers of the Jewish nation. That nation would fight to survive in a harsh world, fall on their faces often, love their God, and more often than not disobey that same God, claim victories, limp away from failures, and still survive to deliver to all of us the Savior of the world. And, as if that was not enough, they also will outlive all the enemies thrown at them in our future...and they will be gazing up into the heavenlies, eyes full of tears, fully forgiven and righteous, hearts overflowing with faith and joy when He returns - that He may be glorified.
