Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is America's most significant and authentic contribution to the history of spirituality, says Richard Rohr. He makes a case that the Twelve Steps relate well to Christian teaching and can rescue people who are drowning in addiction and may not even realize it. To survive the tidal wave of compulsive behavior and addiction, Christians must learn to breathe under water and discover God's love and compassion. In this exploration of Twelve Step spirituality, Rohr identifies the Christian principles in the Twelve Steps, connecting The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous with the gospel. He draws on talks he has given for over twenty years to people in recovery and those who counsel and live with people with addictive behavior. Rohr offers encouragement for becoming interiorly alive and inspiration for making one's life manageable for dealing with the codependence and dysfunction (sin) rampant in our society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous provides a spiritual program dramatically distinct from religion. Twelve Step spirituality is based on experience, not doctrine; it is pragmatic, focusing on what works and not on theory; it is centered in a community that is inclusive, welcoming all who desire to stop drinking; it seeks rigorous honesty even when that honesty involves painful questioning; and it centers upon service to the still suffering alcoholic. The power found in working the Steps is transformational, moving participants from despair to hope, from self-focused resentment to concern for others, and from angry efforts to control to gratitude for gifts received. It works for atheists and agnostics, secularists and free thinkers, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and other faiths. At a time when more and more people identify themselves as spiritual but not religious and the traditional religious institutions are in decline in Western culture, Twelve Step spirituality provides insights that can assist in the renewal and reinvigoration of our churches, synagogues, and mosques. In our time of dramatic social polarization, it can provide a foundation for bridging differences. Largely unknown outside the recovery community, this book examines how this transformative program can be relevant to today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author visited the archives of the headquarters of A.A. in New York, and discovered new communications between Carl Jung and Bill Wilson. For the first time this correspondence shows Jung's respect for A.A. and in turn, its influence on him. In particular, this research shows how Bill Wilson was encouraged by Jung's writings to promote the spiritual aspect of recovery as opposed to the conventional medical model which has failed so abysmally. The book overturns the long-held belief that Jung distrusted groups. Indeed, influenced by A.A.'s success, Jung gave "complete and detailed instructions" on how the A.A. group format could be developed further and used by "general neurotics".Wilson was an advocate of treating some alcoholics with LSD in order to deflate the ego and induce a spiritual experience. The author explains how alcoholism can be diagnosed and understood by professionals and the lay person; by examining the detailed case histories of Jung, the author gives graphic examples of its psychological and behavioural manifestations.

Book excerpt: Spiritual Rehab is a holistic approach to address the problem of sin. It may be unpopular to use the word, yet humanity has struggled with sin since the beginning of time. Repeated sins become patterns which become habits. The best process for breaking habits over the past century has been the Twelve Steps of A.A. Spiritual Rehab takes the reader through the Twelve Steps focusing on breaking the habit of sin common to all of humanity. Brian Hotrum worked with men in a rehab facility that was part of the county jail and uses the Twelve Steps to break that most dangerous of habits in order to enjoy a live of wholeness and holiness. American culture used to be a basically Christian culture. Salvation occurred by calling people back to the faith. It was very similar to the Old Testament prophets calling the Israelites back to the God of their fathers. However, we now live in a culture like Paul faced in Athens. Christianity is no longer the basic operating system of the society and calling people back to faith will not work. The process of conversion is a much more drastic work than it has been in the past. We can no longer ask people to raise their hand in a service and then expect them to somehow move from a life controlled by sin to a life controlled by the Spirit without major changes in their life. The problem with society is sin, and this has been the problem since the Garden of Eden. Sin is what separates us from God and others and even from having a right relationship with ourselves. Sin is as addictive as any drug or habit. Paul talks in Romans 7 about his addiction to sin and his experience of hitting rock bottom. The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous have been used by millions to break their addiction to alcohol. The Twelve Steps have been applied to other addictive behaviors such as drug use, gambling, overeating, and countless other applications. The Twelve Steps of AA can be used to help us break the addiction to sin which is common to all of humanity. This is a holistic process, it is a Wesleyan process, and it is a continuous process. Breaking the addiction to sin common to all humanity requires a support group. The church is not a gathering of perfect people; it is a support group of recovering sinners. Breaking the addiction to sin is a process, there are no shortcuts, but it is possible to find a life of freedom and wholeness.

Book excerpt: The twelve step addiction recovery process often comes in many variations and interpretations; while each variation may focus on different aspects of recovery, they all stem from the groundbreaking work of Bill W. and Dr. Bob Smith, the founders of the organization known as Alcoholics Anonymous. Twelve Steps to Spiritual Freedom: Understanding the Christian Roots of Twelve Step Programs aligns this 20th century construct with its roots in centuries old practices. This sensible approach brings together the deep spiritual tradition of Christianity to complement and support the hands-on, daily work of twelve-step programs. Interspersed with personal experiences, Understanding the Christian Roots of Twelve Step Programs identifies and contextualizes the natural connections between Christian mysticism and the wisdom of twelve step programs and makes this information usable for readers. With her intelligent and pragmatic approach, author Joanna Thyer speaks to those who struggle within twelve step programs and to the counselors, therapists, social workers, and family and friends who support their recovery efforts. Knowing the origins can make the journey through addiction recovery grounded, personal, and rooted in faith.

Rooted in the Christian tradition, these steps offer a path for deep spiritual conversion, a way to regain for our well-being, the lost freedom God intends for us. For over 500 centuries, Ignatian prayer has been a source of spiritual guidance and energy for those seeking a deeper relationship with God, Jesus and Spirit. Freedom and discernment are key themes in Ignatian spirituality, inviting all into a fuller, more authentic Christian lifestyle. This workbook is for everybody who finds themselves out of balance, those overly attached to anything that holds them back from living a more abundant life. Not only addictions, but also old habits, worries, anxieties, resentments, or compulsions that can steal away our peace. This program is unique as it combines the transformative power of the Twelve Step and the Ignatian traditions, using the Gospel stories, meditative Ignatian prayer, and journaling. It can be used in solitude, with a companion, or with a small group.
