Book excerpt: The "Lexicon Grammaticorum" is a comprehensive reference book that provides information on the lives and work of all scholars and thinkers throughout the world who have concerned themselves down the ages with the study and description of language. The "Lexicon" contains articles on more than 1,500 representatives of the world's linguistic traditions, written by 422 authors from 27 countries. Generally, an article consists of a biography, an abstract of the linguist's achievements, including his or her influence, and a two-part bibliography, listing first his or her writings, then those about him or her. Whenever possible, the references are complete; where the works are two numerous for them all to be listed, as is often the case with more recent linguists, only the main titles appear, with references to already existing bibliographies. The aim of the "Lexicon" is twofold: namely to provide access to the history of linguistics through its most important representatives and to combine the world's diverse linguistic traditions in one book, thus showing what is individual and is universal in human thought about language.

Book excerpt: The Psalter is the prayerbook of the people of God. The tradition of incorporating the Psalter in the teaching and life and worship of the primitive community was maintained in the centuries following the apostolic period and continued to provide a major influence upon the thought and spirituality of Christians throughout patristic times. Perhaps no other book of the Bible has been more fully commented upon and explained than the Psalter, right on through the Middle Ages and into Reformation times. - from Foreward by John Eudes Bamberger, Abbott of the Genesee

Book excerpt: A far-reaching analysis of Clément Marot’s poetry (mainly his Psalm paraphrases) shows that this poet was much more than a frivolous court poet; he was touched by the humanist yearning to restore old texts (in this case the Jewish Psalter) to their original glory. In his translations he was inspired by Martin Bucer’s Commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eadwine Psalter (Cambridge, Trinity College MS R.17.1) is arguably the most ambitious manuscript produced in England in the twelfth century. Over a dozen scribes and artists combined to produce a book which contains five different version of the text of the Psalms, three in Latin, one in Old English, and one in Anglo-Norman, with a prologue, a commentary, and a concluding prayer to each Psalm. In addition, the most complex set of Psalter illustrations available, those from the ninth-century Utrecht Psalter, was adapted for the project; the largest known cycle of prefatory biblical pictorial narratives of the period was devised and happened as a pictorial preface; and every Psalm, prayer, and Canticle was given a set of fully illuminated major initials as well as gold and silver minor initials throughout. Several other noteworthy images feature in the book: a portrait of the 'Prince of Scribes', Eadwine himself, the depiction of a comet, and the two plans of the precinct waterworks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory installed c. 1160. In the past the various aspects of this complex compilation have been treated individually (or in some cases not at all). It is the aim of the present volume of studies to counteract the tendency of modern scholarship to fragment its subjects by bringing under scrutiny between two covers all the major components of the Eadwine Psalter. To this end, thirteen distinguished specialists representing all the fields of inquiry have collaborated over a number of years and have consulted each other, comparing notes and opinions. The result is a volume of communal endeavor which locates the manuscript within a particular milieu, at once monastic and proud, aware of contemporary scholarship but inherently conservative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Utrecht Psalter, one of the great survivals of the Carolingian Renaissance, was made about 820-835 at the Benedictine monastery of Hautvilliers and decorated with 166 dynamic, almost impressionistic pen drawings which are masterly interpretation of the Psalter text. In 1996 it was exhibited in Utrecht, alongside related manuscripts such as the Aachen and Ebbo Gospels, the Byzantine Khludov Psalter and the later English Harly and Eadwine Psalters, copied in Canterbury when the Utrecht Psalter was for some centuries in England. Five scholarly essays, designed for a wide-ranging readership, include a discussion of Carolingian cultural achievements; an analysis of the Psalter itself and its place in the history of book production; an overview of medieval Psalter illustration in both Byzantium and the West; and an exa- mination of the English copies of the Utrect Psalter in the later Middle Ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical commentaries study each psalm on its own. However, there is a growing trend to look at the composition of the Psalter. The present commentary on the fifth and last "book" of psalms (Ps 107-150) carries out a systematic analysis of the composition of this set of forty-four psalms, at all levels of its organization: first each psalm on its own, followed by each subsequence formed of several psalms, then each sequence, each of the five subsections that constitute the fifth book, and finally the whole section, i.e., the book. The last five psalms (146-150) are, so to speak, outside the system, for they constitute the doxology that concludes not only the fifth book but also the entire Psalter. The composition is extremely elaborate. At the centre of the construction, Ps 119 which is a long meditation on the Law. It is preceded by the "Egyptian Hallel" which celebrates the exodus from the land of slavery (Ps 113-118) and followed by the "Psalms of Ascents" which sing and hope for the return from exile in Babylon (Ps 120-134). Finally, at the extremities, two subsections that correspond to each other: in the psalmist's own words, "From the mouth of deceit to the thanksgiving of the righteous" (Ps 107-112), "From the venom of the serpent to the praise of the righteous" (Ps 135-145). The interpretation of each group of psalms allows us to reach a greater meaning, which clearly exceeds the sum of the interpretations of each of the units that make it up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late-medieval movement into 'vernacular theology,' as it has come to be called, inspired many forms of literary expression, in all the languages of Europe. Spanning a wide field, the contributors to this volume consider hagiography, translations of and commentaries on scripture, accounts of visionary experiences, and devotional literature. Their essays illuminate encounters with the divine mediated through language, bringing into play a diversity of national cultures and disciplinary points of view. They also engage vital social and political issues connected with religious experience, including challenges to authority, reinterpretations of texts, and renegotiations of gender roles.
