Book excerpt: This book provides practical information about web archives, offers inspiring examples for web archivists, raises new challenges, and shares recent research results about access methods to explore information from the past preserved by web archives. The book is structured in six parts. Part 1 advocates for the importance of web archives to preserve our collective memory in the digital era, demonstrates the problem of web ephemera and shows how web archiving activities have been trying to address this challenge. Part 2 then focuses on different strategies for selecting web content to be preserved and on the media types that different web archives host. It provides an overview of efforts to address the preservation of web content as well as smaller-scale but high-quality collections of social media or audiovisual content. Next, Part 3 presents examples of initiatives to improve access to archived web information and provides an overview of access mechanisms for web archives designed to be used by humans or automatically accessed by machines. Part 4 presents research use cases for web archives. It also discusses how to engage more researchers in exploiting web archives and provides inspiring research studies performed using the exploration of web archives. Subsequently, Part 5 demonstrates that web archives should become crucial infrastructures for modern connected societies. It makes the case for developing web archives as research infrastructures and presents several inspiring examples of added-value services built on web archives. Lastly, Part 6 reflects on the evolution of the web and the sustainability of web archiving activities. It debates the requirements and challenges for web archives if they are to assume the responsibility of being societal infrastructures that enable the preservation of memory. This book targets academics and advanced professionals in a broad range of research areas such as digital humanities, social sciences, history, media studies and information or computer science. It also aims to fill the need for a scholarly overview to support lecturers who would like to introduce web archiving into their courses by offering an initial reference for students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of hours individuals spend in front of screens, such as smartphones, televisions, computers, and tablets, is enormous in today’s society because screen time plays a very important role in work contexts and an even more significant role in social interaction and cultural consumption. This almost compulsive relationship with screens is more evident in children and young people and can have a lasting impact on how a society approaches screen time. Managing Screen Time in an Online Society is a collection of innovative research on how screen time seduces the person to stay in the online interaction leaving her/him in a state of alienation from her/his face-to-face context. While highlighting the methods and applications of time management in the context of screen time, especially during leisure, social interaction, and cultural consumption, this book covers topics including media consumption, psychology, and social networks. This book is ideal for researchers, students, and professionals seeking emerging information on the relationship between online interaction and personal relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, this book investigates how home is imagined, staged and experienced in western culture. Questions about meanings of ‘home’ and domestic culture are triggered by dramatic changes in values and ideals about the dwellings we live in and the dwellings we desire or dread. Deborah Chambers explores how home is idealised as a middle-class haven, managed as an investment, and signified as a status symbol and expression of personal identity. She addresses a range of public, state, commercial, popular and expert discourses about ‘home’: the heritage industry, design, exhibitions, television, social media, home mobilities and migration, smart technologies and ecological sustainability. Drawing on cross-disciplinary research including cultural history and cultural geography, the book offers a distinctive media and cultural studies approach supported by original, historically informed case studies on interior and domestic design; exhibitions of model homes; TV home interiors; ‘media home’ imaginaries; multiscreen homes; corporate visions of ‘homes of tomorrow’ and digital smart homes. A comprehensive and engaging study, this book is ideal for students and researchers of cultural studies, cultural history, media and communication studies, as well as sociology, gender studies, cultural geography and design studies.

Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Seoul, Korea, for the fifth edition of the ACM International Conference on Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video - ACM TVX 2018. We are certain that this is a great place to meet diverse research and industry communities from around the world, including those that have not previously been heavily involved in the TVX conference series. As such, we are incredibly excited to be able to present a stimulating program for ACM TVX 2018 in an equally magnificent part of the world; incidentally representing a first for this conference series - a host city in Asia! As the leading international conference for the presentation and discussion of research and developments into interactive experiences for online video and TV, the conference brings together international researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, ranging from human-computer interaction, multimedia engineering and design to media studies, psychology and sociology, to present and discuss the latest insights in the field. The ultimate mission of the conference is to share novel ideas, concepts, and solutions that fulfill the needs of new media environments and identify new directions for future research and development. This year's conference continues its tradition of being the premier forum in this field, following the success of the four previous editions of TVX (held in Hilversum, Chicago, Brussels and Newcastle upon Tyne), and building on the legacy of the EuroiTV conference series organized all across Europe, between 2003 and 2013. We continue to present research on topics in scope such as immersive experiences, user experiences & interaction design, content production, systems & infrastructure, devise & interaction techniques, media studies, business models & marketing, and innovative concepts & media art. In addition, we introduced two hot topics to the call for papers associated with ACM TVX 2018: AI/Big Data and Social Computing. The call for papers attracted 36 long and short paper submissions from Asia, Europe, North & South America across both academia and industry. Being the first edition in Asia, it received new submissions from China, Japan, and Korea which were less visible in the conference series until now. All submissions went through a rigorous double-blind peer review process. Each paper was assigned a primary Associate Chair (AC) and a secondary AC. The primary AC recruited at least two reviewers for each of their assigned paper, whilst the secondary AC recruited at least one reviewer for their assigned paper. Once the reviewers submitted their evaluation of the suitability of the paper, the primary AC wrote a meta-review summarizing the main points of each review. Authors of the submissions were then notified of the completed review and given the chance to respond to the reviewers' comments during a rebuttal phase. During the TPC meeting on March 16, 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal, each paper was discussed in-depth with the ACs, and the final decision on the accepted papers was made, resulting in a high-quality program of 12 accepted full and short papers, accounting for an acceptance rate of 33%. Full papers, Short papers, the abstracts of the 2 Workshops co-located with TVX (in addition to an industry workshop close to the public), and the 17 Work In Progress papers are part of the main proceedings and will be included in the ACM Digital Library. In addition to these submissions, there were several other tracks that attracted a considerable number of contributions, resulting in 8 TVX in Industry presentations, 8 Demonstrations, 3 Doctoral Consortium papers, and 2 Grand Challenge presentations, all made available in the adjunct proceedings, along with the papers from the Workshops.

Book excerpt: Cognitive research in translation and interpreting has reached a critical threshold of maturity that is triggering rapid expansion along exciting new paths that potentially lead to deeper connections with other disciplines. Innovation and Expansion in Translation Process Research reflects this broadening scope and reach, emphasizing ongoing methodological innovations, diversification of research topics and questions, and rich interactions with adjacent fields of research. The contributions to the volume can be grouped within four loosely defined themes: advances in traditional topics in translation process research, including problems in translation, translation competence or expertise, and specialization of translators; advances in research into the emotional or affective aspects of translating and translator training; innovations in machine translation and post-editing; expansion of cognitively-oriented translation studies to include editing processes and reception studies. This timely volume highlights the burgeoning growth, diversification, and connectivity of translation process research.

Book excerpt: This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. Understanding the challenges of this field in the current multi-sensory, multi-device, and multi-protocol world is not an easy task. The book revisits the foundations of mediasync, including theoretical frameworks and models, highlights ongoing research efforts, like hybrid broadband broadcast (HBB) delivery and users’ perception modeling (i.e., Quality of Experience or QoE), and paves the way for the future (e.g., towards the deployment of multi-sensory and ultra-realistic experiences). Although many advances around mediasync have been devised and deployed, this area of research is getting renewed attention to overcome remaining challenges in the next-generation (heterogeneous and ubiquitous) media ecosystem. Given the significant advances in this research area, its current relevance and the multiple disciplines it involves, the availability of a reference book on mediasync becomes necessary. This book fills the gap in this context. In particular, it addresses key aspects and reviews the most relevant contributions within the mediasync research space, from different perspectives. Mediasync: Handbook on Multimedia Synchronization is the perfect companion for scholars and practitioners that want to acquire strong knowledge about this research area, and also approach the challenges behind ensuring the best mediated experiences, by providing the adequate synchronization between the media elements that constitute these experiences.
