This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics remains a core area of engineering. Formulating and analyzing mathematical models of basic engineering systems is an essential skill that all engineering students should endeavor to acquire. This book will serve as an excellent introduction to linear mathematics for engineering students, both seniors and graduate students. It is the result of a collaboration between a chemical engineer and a mathematician, both of whom have taught classes on modelling and applied mathematics. It provides a broad collection of chemical engineering modelling examples to train students in model formulation and model simplification as well as give a thorough coverage of the mathematical tools used to analyze and solve linear chemical engineering models. Solution manual is provided for free to instructors who adopt this textbook. Please send your request to [email protected].
Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling by : Rutherford Aris
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling written by Rutherford Aris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-07-16 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling is the art and craft of building a system of equations that is both sufficiently complex to do justice to physical reality and sufficiently simple to give real insight into the situation. Mathematical Modeling: A Chemical Engineer's Perspective provides an elementary introduction to the craft by one of the century's most distinguished practitioners. Though the book is written from a chemical engineering viewpoint, the principles and pitfalls are common to all mathematical modeling of physical systems. Seventeen of the author's frequently cited papers are reprinted to illustrate applications to convective diffusion, formal chemical kinetics, heat and mass transfer, and the philosophy of modeling. An essay of acknowledgments, asides, and footnotes captures personal reflections on academic life and personalities. Describes pitfalls as well as principles of mathematical modeling Presents twenty examples of engineering problems Features seventeen reprinted papers Presents personal reflections on some of the great natural philosophers Emphasizes modeling procedures that precede extensive calculations

Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling of Lithium Batteries by : Krishnan S. Hariharan
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling of Lithium Batteries written by Krishnan S. Hariharan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique to be the only one completely dedicated for battery modeling for all components of battery management system (BMS) applications. The contents of this book compliment the multitude of research publications in this domain by providing coherent fundamentals. An explosive market of Li ion batteries has led to aggressive demand for mathematical models for battery management systems (BMS). Researchers from multi-various backgrounds contribute from their respective background, leading to a lateral growth. Risk of this runaway situation is that researchers tend to use an existing method or algorithm without in depth knowledge of the cohesive fundamentals—often misinterpreting the outcome. It is worthy to note that the guiding principles are similar and the lack of clarity impedes a significant advancement. A repeat or even a synopsis of all the applications of battery modeling albeit redundant, would hence be a mammoth task, and cannot be done in a single offering. The authors believe that a pivotal contribution can be made by explaining the fundamentals in a coherent manner. Such an offering would enable researchers from multiple domains appreciate the bedrock principles and forward the frontier. Battery is an electrochemical system, and any level of understanding cannot ellipse this premise. The common thread that needs to run across—from detailed electrochemical models to algorithms used for real time estimation on a microchip—is that it be physics based. Build on this theme, this book has three parts. Each part starts with developing a framework—often invoking basic principles of thermodynamics or transport phenomena—and ends with certain verified real time applications. The first part deals with electrochemical modeling and the second with model order reduction. Objective of a BMS is estimation of state and health, and the third part is dedicated for that. Rules for state observers are derived from a generic Bayesian framework, and health estimation is pursued using machine learning (ML) tools. A distinct component of this book is thorough derivations of the learning rules for the novel ML algorithms. Given the large-scale application of ML in various domains, this segment can be relevant to researchers outside BMS domain as well. The authors hope this offering would satisfy a practicing engineer with a basic perspective, and a budding researcher with essential tools on a comprehensive understanding of BMS models.

Book Synopsis Digital Simulation in Electrochemistry by : D. Britz
Download or read book Digital Simulation in Electrochemistry written by D. Britz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of frustration. When I first became interested in digi tal simulation in 1967 (I didn't know the name then), there were no texts to tell one the how of it. This has not changed greatly since then; it is significant that just about all publications about the technique refer to a chapter by Feldberg in an electrochemical series, written in 1969. When I ran a course on the method recently, it became evident that this chapter is not enough for the raw beginner. Neither does he/she get much help from the mathematical textbooks which, at best, leave the special electrochemical aspects (if not a lot else) to one's imagination. This book, then, is written for practical digital simulators who do not have a friend who will tell them how to do it. The beauty of the digital approach is that one can separate out various dynamic processes taking place simultaneously. I have structured the book in this way. The major computing usually lies in the diffusion of substance, while the major program ming effort (and preparatory paper work) goes into the boundary conditions. These are treated separately.
