Blum is a renowned expert on the psychology of police officers. With Turning Tragedy into Victory, he returns to and expands on the important subject of how to best help those who have sworn to protect and serve when they are the ones who have fallen. According to Blum, officers' lack of knowledge and skill in controlling the stress of the moment has increased their risk of being killed, assaulted, or making mistakes that cost them dearly in career or family relationships. Through visceral, real-life accounts of officers with whom he has personally worked, he identifies pitfalls, errors, and traps that are created when officers lose control over how their brains and bodies react to unexpected crises; explains why and how this lack of control occurs; and provides mental, emotional, and behavioral tools that have proven highly effective at enhancing performance. Above all, Blum says, officers must learn the important lessons that come from their experiences and commit themselves to the quest for mastery in law enforcement--in other words, to turn tragedy into victory. This book is an indispensable resource for law enforcement officers, those who work with them, and the people who wish to keep them safe among the increasing dangers and challenges of today's society.

The author discloses bearing a heavy heart for many missed opportunities to have more conversations, and maximizing on more of those moments to be present. But now understands and embraces that you can't change the past, you can only work in the present to create a better future; giving God the glory throught. The later chapters illustrate the power of a positive mindset, the importance of responding well to unfavorable situations, and who gets the glory in the process, man or God. As well as what that glory looks like compared to initial expectations. Once you get to a point where the hurt is not as painful, and you feel the urge to help others through your story, you'll make the choice to have peace and progress, in the process. Or you won't. This book walks the reader through a roller coaster type journey full of negative emotions, hurtful situations, and painful circumstances. Life as I knew it fell apart when I was just 4 years old and it would continue to go downhill for several years afterwards. What did I learn from these experiences? The world doesn't owe you anything. If you want to make something of yourself, it will be up to you to take ownership and accountability of the outcome. A mentor once said I was "fearless in my ability to address risks, viewing them as walls to jump over rather than barriers to stop me" - and he was right. I try not to let anything stand in my way when I am pursuing a goal. Follow along with me on my journey of self-discovery and how I managed to navigate all of the lessons life had to throw my way. Instead of letting them knock me down, I used these lessons as stepping stones on the path to success, turning tragedy into triumph to embrace my destiny in entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: Learn How to Turn Tragedy and Pain into a Catalyst for Growth and Success! It's been said that pain is a fundamental part of life-a darkness that acts as a contrast to the light. Most, if not all of us experience pain at some point in our lives, particularly the emotional pain of loss. While it may be true that pain is unavoidable, it doesn't have to lead to meaningless suffering. Pain can serve a far greater purpose in your life than something to be feared. Jay Nixon, the bestselling author of The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight is back with a groundbreaking new book, The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life's Not Supposed to Suck! The Purpose of Pain is a transformational guide that shows you how to turn pain into a catalyst for change-how you can turn your story of tragedy into a life of triumph. In the book, Nixon chronicles his personal struggle with the pain of losing his father at age five in a devastating head-on car crash - an event that cast a two decade-long shadow over his life. Using a combination of direct truths and a touch of humor, Nixon walks you step by step through the process he used to overcome the tragedy that had dominated his life, and turn it into a life of triumph and success. The result is a compassionate guide that anyone can use to conquer emotional pain in all of its many forms. In this book, you'll learn: How honoring your pain helps jumpstart the healing process Tools and tactics to avoid tragedy that dictate your future How to shift your mindset from victim to warrior How to use your pain for purpose instead of sadness Why rituals are powerful and how to use them to heal Permission to stop feeling guilty about claiming the happiness you deserve What the Personal Development Vortex is-and how to avoid it. ...and much more! Most of all, you'll pinpoint the habits and thinking patterns you've been unconsciously using to sabotage your own progress, so you can overcome your pain and turn it into a catalyst for progress. Jay Nixon is an internationally recognized transformation coach who has been profiled by ABS, CBS and FOX. He has also been featured in magazines such as Health and Triathlete. With his extensive coaching and speaking career and deep life experience, plus his witty but purposeful writing style, there's no one better qualified to explain the benefits (yes, benefits!) of suffering than Nixon.

Book excerpt: Transformation is a collection of stories about individuals who have survived horrific events and somehow found a way to turn their lives around, overcoming tragedy to thrive and rebuild a new, worthwhile life. Books about people who have survived an horrific event are not uncommon, but they are usually focused on one person and on how he/she survived as opposed to how he/she carried on with their lives together after the event. It is uncommon to find a collection of survivor stories written by people who have not only survived trauma but who have regrouped and gone on to bigger and better things. Transformation is a collection of stories about individuals who have survived horrific events and somehow found a way to turn their lives around, overcoming tragedy to thrive and rebuild a new, worthwhile life. The use of multiple stories allows the book to connect with readers across a wider platform than might be true if the book focused on one person's life. Each contributor tells his/her story in a chapter, and then Tim comments at the end of that chapter, analysing the life story from a psychological perspective and giving readers 'take home tips' which they can use in their own lives. The contributors tell about overcoming tragedies and health issues such as alcoholism, depression and cancer; limb amputation following a car accident; a policeman's recovery from post-traumatic stress; the death of a child; losing all the other members of your family in a family murder; and child sexual abuse

Book excerpt: It was 3:12 a.m. when Cindy Curtis Johnson and her husband, Glenn, got the knock on their front door that every parent dreads: their son, Brandon, was dead. Brandon died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound only hours after he and Cindy had what she describes as a wonderful conversation on the phone. In the days and months that followed, Cindy was forced to reexamine everything in her life: her experiences, her relationships, her assumptions about God’s plans for her, and her dreams for the future. In this searingly honest book, Cindy reveals how Brandon’s death has helped her make sense of her life, from being teased by classmates when she was a child to her difficult relationship with her mother-in-law. With God’s help, she has also found the courage to face the darkest feelings, the ones we try to avoid, such as guilt—why didn’t she insist that Brandon see a therapist?—and anger—where were her friends and family members when she needed them most? As a professional, Cindy knows that this process can empower anyone suffering from loss. She doesn’t stop there, though. She not only illuminates a path that will help you understand tragedy’s place in your life, but also encourages you to use this time to think seriously and specifically about the person you want to become now. Join Cindy on her journey of healing and hope as you identify God’s plan for you.
