Book excerpt: Life hurts when it is experienced through the flames of tragedy, but there is hope. There are answers. There is a purpose for it all. Todd had the perfect life: a thriving ministry, a happy and healthy family, and a bright future. All of it was interrupted when his oldest daughter, Makenzie, was killed in a traffic accident. Needing to heal, Todd took a leave of absence from ministry and went to work for a friends company that refines gold and silver. As a refiner, Todd realized that the process of refining metal paralleled the grief and healing that he and his family were experiencing. In his book, Refined, Todd examines principles that help answer the questions that surface when pain and tragedy poke their noses into our lives. Whether you have experienced the tragic loss of a loved one or struggle with the daily frustrations of life, Refined will help you understand what God may be up to. Each chapter includes discussion topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning Pain into Love is a book about the power of God working through someone to transform their suffering into a lifelong blessing. So often the trials and tribulations of our life can make us feel hopeless and confused about who we are in this world. I believe, with the belief in something greater than ourselves, a positive attitude and the intention to make a difference in the world a person can turn anything into a gift. Anytime someone has been through an experience they now have the ability to help someone else that is going through the experience for the first time. Years ago when I was living in Santa Monica, California I came across a Reader's Digest. As I was flipping through the magazine I saw a quote, "I am not sure what Enlightenment is but I think it has something to do with turning pain into love". That phrase resonated with me and it has stuck with me ever since.

In the years following her own breakup, writer Angelina Rosario attended relationship workshops, hired a relationship coach, read numerous books on how to get over a heartbreak, and discovered that heartbreak could be an uncompromising teacher of authenticity, power, purpose, and even joy. Angelina didn't learn how to tap into her power right away; her stubbornness and desire to suppress the pain caused her to be on a disruptive path longer than needed. After accepting her new circumstances and finding the power within them, she not only overcame her heartbreak, but discovered her purpose. She shares that knowledge here, with recognizable narratives, insights, on-the-spot practices, exercises, meditations, and down-to-Earth advice.

Book excerpt: Learn How to Turn Tragedy and Pain into a Catalyst for Growth and Success! It's been said that pain is a fundamental part of life-a darkness that acts as a contrast to the light. Most, if not all of us experience pain at some point in our lives, particularly the emotional pain of loss. While it may be true that pain is unavoidable, it doesn't have to lead to meaningless suffering. Pain can serve a far greater purpose in your life than something to be feared. Jay Nixon, the bestselling author of The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight is back with a groundbreaking new book, The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life's Not Supposed to Suck! The Purpose of Pain is a transformational guide that shows you how to turn pain into a catalyst for change-how you can turn your story of tragedy into a life of triumph. In the book, Nixon chronicles his personal struggle with the pain of losing his father at age five in a devastating head-on car crash - an event that cast a two decade-long shadow over his life. Using a combination of direct truths and a touch of humor, Nixon walks you step by step through the process he used to overcome the tragedy that had dominated his life, and turn it into a life of triumph and success. The result is a compassionate guide that anyone can use to conquer emotional pain in all of its many forms. In this book, you'll learn: How honoring your pain helps jumpstart the healing process Tools and tactics to avoid tragedy that dictate your future How to shift your mindset from victim to warrior How to use your pain for purpose instead of sadness Why rituals are powerful and how to use them to heal Permission to stop feeling guilty about claiming the happiness you deserve What the Personal Development Vortex is-and how to avoid it. ...and much more! Most of all, you'll pinpoint the habits and thinking patterns you've been unconsciously using to sabotage your own progress, so you can overcome your pain and turn it into a catalyst for progress. Jay Nixon is an internationally recognized transformation coach who has been profiled by ABS, CBS and FOX. He has also been featured in magazines such as Health and Triathlete. With his extensive coaching and speaking career and deep life experience, plus his witty but purposeful writing style, there's no one better qualified to explain the benefits (yes, benefits!) of suffering than Nixon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest healing comes from turning pain into purpose. The Christian life is not always going to go smoothly. Joseph of the Bible was accused of rape and wrongly convicted. Job suffered pain and loss. Jesus suffered and died on the cross. Bad things are going to happen, but we also "know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). In Turning Pain into Purpose Loretta gives personal insight into paving a way to turning pain into purpose through guidance and prayer. As Christians, we have a mandate to love the unlovable, to love women and men who don't know how to love themselves. Loretta has made it her purpose to teach as many hurting people as God allows--that even when you don't know how to love yourself, God will always love you with an everlasting love. It is his desire that the cycle of brokenness and abuse be removed from our lives so we can walk in his freedom and purpose for our lives. Your purpose is in your testimony, and when you turn your story into a testimony, give it to God and he will heal you and reveal to you that you are not alone. Someone needs to hear you survived your pain and how you were able to overcome. God has a purpose for you. It is not to live abused and broken the rest of your life. Once you get a relationship with him, cry out to him. He will hear you. He has been there for you all the time, waiting to turn your brokenness into purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic pain costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. Given the burden of pain in human lives, dollars, and social consequences, relieving pain should be a national priority.

Book excerpt: An exploration of why people all over the world love to engage in pain on purpose--from dominatrices, religious ascetics, and ultramarathoners to ballerinas, icy ocean bathers, and sideshow performers Masochism is sexy, human, reviled, worshipped, and can be delightfully bizarre. Deliberate and consensual pain has been with us for millennia, encompassing everyone from Black Plague flagellants to ballerinas dancing on broken bones to competitive eaters choking down hot peppers while they cry. Masochism is a part of us. It lives inside workaholics, tattoo enthusiasts, and all manner of garden variety pain-seekers. At its core, masochism is about feeling bad, then better--a phenomenon that is long overdue for a heartfelt and hilarious investigation. And Leigh Cowart would know: they are not just a researcher and science writer--they're an inveterate, high-sensation seeking masochist. And they have a few questions: Why do people engage in masochism? What are the benefits and the costs? And what does masochism have to say about the human experience? By participating in many of these activities themselves, and through conversations with psychologists, fellow scientists, and people who seek pain for pleasure, Cowart unveils how our minds and bodies find meaning and relief in pain--a quirk in our programming that drives discipline and innovation even as it threatens to swallow us whole.
