Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Why is this an alarming problem? Because it is the family unit that shapes and molds us into the individuals that we are today. In this book I try to share with you not only my triumphs and successes but, my hardships and failures as well. Born into an Hispanic family, life has given me a unique perspective of the world around us. It has engulfed me with the good and bad of what our society has to offer. On the negative side, I have tried to dismiss the stereotyping that unavoidably is attached to my race. I have tried to overcome the prejudices that still linger today. On the positive side, I have learned to appreciate and respect the wonderful customs and traditions that my culture permeates. As an adolescent, my parents instilled in me the value of growing up in the Catholic faith. As an athlete, my father taught me the value of hard work, grit, and determination. As a teacher, my brother Doug, taught me the value of shaping and molding the minds of our youth. As a coach, I learned the values of being a man of integrity-adhering always to a code of moral conduct. "Be a man of your word," my father would always tell me. "Be a role model and be willing to lead by example." As a senior citizen, I have learned to appreciate the life that God has blessed me with. I ask you now, what defines you as an individual? How do you react to the ups and downs in your life? How will you navigate the twists and turns that life drops at your doorstep? Go forth and make a difference in the world!!!

Like any other autobiography, its about family, friends, and the personal experiences we shared. It does not include every single thing that ever happened to me in my life. There are, however, numerous nostalgic references to music, movies, radio, television, sports, social /cultural political names, places, and events intermingled within the chronology of my life. Beginning with the happy carefree days I spent playing ball in the street and going to the movies. The times we went to Coney Island and Ebbets Field. The happy and not-so-happy days I spent as a teenager in junior high and hanging out on the corner. The love, loyalty, and compassion my wife, Connie, always displayedfrom our first meeting and throughout our marriageduring some tough, depressing times. And last but not least, the happiness we shared in the birth of our children and grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Haywood, an English, working-class, Black Country lad, saw only a lifetime of factory drudgery as his fate when he was young. He left school at fifteen without any academic qualifications and entered the workforce with various engineering companies. For five years, he served in the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom, Cyprus, and Malta. After his service, he was hired on at one of the largest engineering companies in the UK-Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds. At the age of thirty-six, while still working at GKN, he threw caution to the winds to attend Ruskin College, Oxford, to pursue a dream. At the age of thirty-nine, he earned the first of three university degrees, culminating in a doctorate at the age of forty-five. In this memoir, he expresses strong views that may challenge those who are unwilling to debate the issues, including the environment for education and the social situation in the UK, the apparent goals of the current government, and sport and sportsmanship. He has traveled the world and befriended interesting and stimulating people from places he never thought he would see with his own eyes. His is a journey of discovery, proof that life holds great potential for those who are willing to look beyond their immediate environment or circumstances. He hopes to encourage others to seek something beyond their current factory, office, or shop door, where a more satisfying future may await.

What is meant by the well-being of man? What is the end in human life? When can we say that a man is successful in life? How can he be happy and successful? It is argued that happiness is not pleasure; it does not come through high income and consumption; beyond certain levels income and consumption cause dissatisfaction, unhappiness and alienation. The book upholds the Aristotelian view that happiness means living well – living a life of excellence. It discusses how moral judgment and habituation help the development of good life. It analyses paths of spiritual liberation, the highest state of human happiness. It also argues for a liberal state where people enjoy different negative and positive freedoms making possible flourishing of human diversities

Book excerpt: I remember, Youth. I once firmly grasp your passion for life.I ran with your endless energy, flying over hill and dale, the wind straining to catch up and warm sunlight on my face.At night the stars were within my grasp and love surrounded my every move.Your strength pushed me to higher levels, free from pain, fatigue or future cares.Suddenly, somewhere along the joy-filled way of life I stopped to sleep. When I awakened you were gone.I searched for you but found you left me behind. In the accompaniment of a new lover you deserted me.I cry out for your return but to no avail. Now, I find solace in memories and sit a lonely traveler in a grim world filled with challenges I no longer care to take.My dreams are of youth and its thrills. But there is hope for my spirit is still young. In my mind I still run, love, conquer difficulties. I watch you now, in the laughter and song of my children and grandchildren.I find that you never left after all. You are endless.

He reached over to turn it off but was suddenly hit by a sharp pain in his stomach. He groaned and curled up into a ball, clutching his stomach tightly. The pain was so intense that he felt like he was being tortured. He tried to take deep breaths to calm himself down, but it only made things worse. Sweat began to pour down his face and his entire body was trembling with pain. He closed his eyes tightly and tried to ride it out, but the pain only grew worse. After what felt like hours, David finally lost consciousness. He couldn't remember anything that happened after that, but when he woke up, he felt weak and disoriented. He struggled to sit up, feeling as if his entire body had been drained of all energy. He noticed the tea table in front of him, with a spilled cup of water and a few empty pill bottles. He couldn't remember taking any medication, but he knew that he needed something to ease the pain. He tried to reach for the pills, but his hands were shaking so badly that he couldn't even hold them. He managed to grab a glass of water and slowly sipped it, feeling slightly better with each gulp. He knew that he needed to rest and regain his strength, but he also knew that he couldn't ignore this pain any longer. He needed to seek medical attention as soon as possible. David slowly got up, using the table to steady himself. He knew that he had a long road ahead of him, but he also knew that he had to fight. He took a deep breath and slowly made his way out of the room, determined to get the help he needed to overcome this pain.

Book excerpt: What difference should the resurrection of the crucified Jesus make to Christian thought, to our sense of the cosmos, and our understanding of humanity itself? Despite the centrality of the resurrection in the New Testament and the Creed, the practical answer of many Christians might be: not much. In this light, Anthony Kelly sets out to affirm the resurrection as the living center of Christian life and the basis for its theological methods and themes. Without the resurrection, he writes, ""hope would be a repressive optimism, or an accommodation to routine despair."" Acknowledging that the resurrection, like a work of art, eludes any single point of view, Kelly shows why it remains the key to Gods relationship to Jesus and ourselves, the most critical horizon from which to grasp the meaning and pattern of life, and the basis of our ultimate hopes.
