Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2001 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A+, University of Warwick (Warwick Business School), language: English, abstract: After years of ever-increasing profits, the ailing British retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) has fallen out of favour with British customers. Sales and profit strongly declined, followed by shakeups in the top management team. M&S faced extinction when confronted with Philip Green′s takeover plans. Top management have made efforts to turn M&S around. The analytical approach to assess these efforts is as follows: Having evaluated turnaround models (Chapter 1), I will observe actions undertaken by M&S (Chapter 2), finally putting both sides together, determining if the actions fit the model (Chapter 3). Introducing competitive advantage as the measurement for success (Chapter 4), the conclusion (Chapter 5) will show that M&S is just one example for a problem that goes far deeper.

Visionary leader Greg Brenneman believes that true business success and personal fulfillment are two sides of the same coin. The techniques that will grow your business will also help you achieve a rich, purposeful, and integrated life. Here, Brenneman takes what he’s learned from turning around or tuning up many businesses—including Continental Airlines and Burger King—and distills it into a simple, clear, five-step roadmap that anyone can follow. He teaches you how to: *prepare a succinct Go Forward plan *build a fortress balance sheet *grow your sales and profits *choose all-star servant leaders *empower your team For more than thirty years, Brenneman has seen these steps foster dramatic results in a variety of business environments. But he also came to realize that he could apply these same principles to improve his life and build a lasting moral legacy. He found he could make better decisions by carefully taking the most important facets of his life—faith, family, friendship, fitness, and finance—into consideration. Brenneman’s inspiring examples, from both his business and his life, demonstrate the astounding effects these steps can have when you apply them—right away and all at once.

Book excerpt: There are many books on business but very few on turnaround management. Yet, to turn around a distressed business is one of the most crucial challenges of a manager: You have to get it right first time, there is no room for failure and a lot of people's jobs and livelihoods depend on the turnaround manager doing a good job. This book is written by a practitioner, for practitioners and tells about practitioners. About the successful and the not so successful, offering valuable lessons from both. This book has also been written with the student or novice in mind, because all to often studying is based on theory rather than on real life and its antics. Therefore this book contains exercises and questions designed to stimulate strategic thinking and to challenge conventional wisdom. Only if we constantly review our deeds and relentlessly seek new best practices, we will succeed. When writing this book, it was of particular importance to me to not just write about the "what to do." Too many books and too many consultants just tell you what to do, yet neglect to tell you the secrets of actually "how" to do it. It is easy to say "you have got to reduce your costs but without compromising quality." The real trick is how you actually do it. This book is full of "how's" and therefore a practical everyday guide, manual, some even may say "bible" for the turnaround practitioner. Real life examples, experienced by the author himself, not fiction or theoretical models make this book an exciting reading, taking you on a tour through the changes of management over time and juxtapositioning successful and failing strategies and decisions. A lifetime of over 30 years experience and learning condensed and distilled, makes Turnaround and Crisis Management unique, current, highly topical and valuable to practitioners, clients and company directors alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do your company and employees have the necessary "IQ" not only to withstand a crisis but also come through it with strength and confidence? Like many companies over the last few years, yours has probably done a great deal to reassess its physical, strategic, and financial vulnerabilities. However, there is a huge difference between business continuity planning and true crisis management. Ian Mitroff outlines seven distinct competencies your organization needs to handle crises effectively: Right Heart (emotional IQ): By accepting crisis as an inevitability, you can process much of the shock and grief beforehand, and avoid making the effects of the crisis even worse through an unconstructive response. Right Thinking (creative IQ): "Crises don’t care about the ways in which we have organized the world," so out-of-the-box thinking is essential. Right Social and Political IQ: Understand that your business is subject not only to the pitfalls of its industry, but to the universal and complex challenges that threaten all companies. Right Integration (integrative IQ): Realize that crises are perceived differently by different stakeholders, and are never simple "exercises" that can be "solved." Identify and reconcile these perceptions now so that the path is clear when the crisis strikes. Right Technical IQ: "Think like a controlled paranoid" to uncover ways in which malicious forces could cause a crisis in your company. Question every assumption about what is "normal," "impossible," or "absurd." Right Aesthetic IQ: Reconsider the classic design of the corporation, which is meant to address problems as they arise, and move toward one in which crisis management is an overarching discipline on a par with, for example, finance. Spiritual IQ: Reject the notion that people’s physical, mental, and spiritual beings are completely separate; and establish ahead of time why our work is, and must remain, important to us on many different levels. Although crisis management has taken on new urgency in recent turbulent times, the need for careful planning did not originate on September 11, 2001. Mitroff’s examples, drawn from interviews conducted both before and after the 2001 attacks during his 25 years of experience, demonstrate the need for action -- and offer a blueprint for taking it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Wittig aims at gaining additional insights into the crisis and turnaround process of SMEs, investigating both, the turnaround success and the impact of turnaround on the family role in family firms. Based on a specifically developed integrated conceptual turnaround model, the author collected a sample of 209 turnaround cases of German medium-sized companies from restructuring experts working for German banks. Employing a variety of carefully selected statistical analyses he identifies key factors for turnaround success and finds specific archetypes of crises and turnaround. The study concludes with an analysis of the impact of a successful turnaround on the family firms within his sample. Based on the study’s insights he provides both, recommendations for future research and a set of practical implications for all relevant stakeholders of a turnaround situation.
