I thought I had what it took when I joined the Peace Corps in 1964 until I came face to face with the reality of living and teaching in Anatolia, Turkey. From my first experience with Turkish cuisine to my attempts to emulate America recipes, from my first meetings with Turks to my final good-byes, these forty-five short stories highlight the ups and downs of a fresh-out-of-college, know-it-all female Volunteer attempting to find her place in the conservative town of Konya, Turkey. Patricia has lived and worked in Turkey, Italy, and South Korea. She now resides in Iowa, where she shares a house with an assortment of adults, cats, and the occasional eight-year-old. Seeds of Change was Patricia Morgan's first novel and Turkish Delight is her first collection of memoir stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having a daughter serving in the Peace Corps, prompted me to publish, Letters from Iran, written forty years ago. The experiences of mine remain relevant today. The complex world with its problems is much like the situation forty years ago. These letters express the adjustment from being a strange foreigner, to becoming a beloved friend within the sphere of the friends, neighbors and acquaintances made while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Babol, Iran from 1970-1972. I am now the age my parents were when these letters were written. I am facing retirement and aging and feel gratitude for the example my parents gave me of living vibrantly into old age. Both Mom and Dad lived into their nineties, proof that an active lifestyle maintains quality of life. Living for twenty five months in Iran changed my life, changed my attitudes about foreigners and deepened my philosophy that people are basically good. Learning the language, the customs, living among the people made this possible. I am deeply grateful to the friends mentioned in these letters. Contact with the Iranian families was lost within a year. Desire to return for a visit to Iran lingers in my heart. Christmas letters have kept me in touch with the Collins family. My sisters and I remain close. I married David Gray six weeks after returning to the States on furlough. We are blessed with four children; Mark Irving, Stephanie Ann, Brian Leroy and Timothy Alan. Our home is in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Side of the World: Vision and Reality embraces and celebrates the experiences of idealistic, young Peace Corps volunteers as they confronted the ancient and enigmatic civilization of India four decades ago. Prompted by memories and emotions tapped during a gathering on the 40-year reunion of their return to the States, members of India 44 A&B provide reflections that are honest, compelling, insightful, riotous, humbling, and yet redemptive. These reflections give expression to feelings long repressed and, at the same time, uncover the mysterious ways in which their service in remote India transformed and redirected the trajectory of their lives. Their stories provide a humorous and deeply moving description of village life, where imperfect language skills and limited technical capabilities interacted with good intentions and stubborn dedication to produce embarrassment on the one hand, and the occasional minor miracle on the other. This is not a feel-good testimony to the Peace Corps on its golden anniversary. Rather, it is a sobering depiction of the lives of volunteers living in one of the Peace Corps' most demanding site countries, where frustrations and challenges were found in abundance. Yet at the end of the day, these stories generally attest to the wisdom of the Peace Corps concept, which affirms the powers of volunteerism and the giving of self. For many, it was the first time these volunteers had articulated their feelings since leaving India. Mary Jo Clark, Thomas Corbett, Michael Simonds and Haywood Turrentine compiled the book. Respectively, the authors reside in San Diego, California, Madison, Wisconsin, the greater Hartford area, and Birmingham, Alabama. http: //sbpra.com/HaywoodTurrentine

Book excerpt: 101 Arabian Tales: How We All Persevered in Peace Corps Libya is substantially set apart from the over-1,000 published Peace Corps memoirs because they are individual memoirs and this is a unique collective memoir, garnered from in-depth interviews with 101 fellow Libyan Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. A herculean effort. The story's spine is Hobler's own narrative, anchored to and deftly embroidered with hundreds of other anecdotes. Rather than a narrow individual view, this collective sharing provides many rich hues and shades of experiences-hilarious, heartbreaking, insightful, poignant, as well as educational and inspiring. These volunteers were spread out over 900 miles resulting in an omniscient kaleidoscope of experiences, many of which fall under the category of "you can't make this up!" It's an amazingly detailed chronicle of anecdotes, historical perspectives, fun, adventure and hardship. Hobler's breezy whimsical style is accessible and entertaining, capped off with 220 compelling photographs. "Randy Hobler has written the best memoir of a Peace Corps experience that I have ever read. His amazingly detailed book instantly grips the reader by putting Libya in its properly rich and unique historical perspective." --Niels Marquardt Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Madagascar and the Union of the Comoros Peace Corps Volunteer-Zaire and Rwanda The book is available on Amazon. Book excerpt: Going to Mxico provocatively probes the side of Mxico not often seen by visitors, the small pueblos, and provides a humorous, but at times, poignant perspective. In his Peace Corps memoir, David H. Greegor offers personal accounts of not only the life of a volunteer, but the lives of the Mexican people. You will read about the hilarious side of the Mexican bus system, Christmas in one extremely poor community, the profile of the author's Mexican pap and a glimpse of the life of another volunteer. This book will make you laugh as well as cry. Going to Mxico evokes reasons why so many people love Mxico and why living there changed his life forever. From the introduction David writes, "I remember very vividly one night walking to downtown Quertaro and my wife, Sonya, saying, 'We probably will never have life this good again.' And even though I had been working all day in a small village and was beat, I could only agree with her. And I still do."
