To him the Old Testament was bet ter than the Old and New Testaments together. He thought a Moslem not only of more value than all the rest of the world, but of more value alone than he would be with the rest of the world added to him. He believed that the Will is of more importance, not only than any other single faculty of man, but of more importance than all the faculties and powers of man - reason, affection and will - under the harmonious sway of a predominant passion like love. AEgean that is the Greek Archipelago. No such mingling of land and sea in either hemisphere, unless it be in the Inland Sea of Japan. And here to the beauty of nature is added the charm of historical and poetical association; and of sacred memories, as we follow in the track of Apostles; so that the mind as well as the eye is full as we sail along these enchanted shores. To recall impressions so fair and yet so fleeting, is the purpose of these slight sketches. It is a chapter of travel by itself, which finds its natural culmination in that wonderful city, the bride of the Bosphorus, as Venice was the bride of the Adriatic, amid whose mosques and palaces sits a figure more inscrutable than the Sphinx- that of its strange master, "the unspeakable Turk." Of this I have written before, but it is ten years since I first saw the minarets of Constantinople, and in that time history has been making very fast. The whole Eastern question revolves round this narrow strip of the Bosphorus- the border-line of Europe and Asia. Towards this line Christendom has advanced by forced marches in the late war, which cost Turkey half of her dominion in Europe, and set free her Christian populations after the oppressions of four hundred years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Wars With Turkey Man of the South.' The Eastern question will still be unanswered, and there will still be a dormant volcano which one day will convulse Europe. Ever since the year 1453, when the Turks conquered Constantinople, it may be said that they have been in almost a chronic state of dissension or war with their Christian neighbours. Up to 1683, when Mahomet the Fourth besieged Vienna, the tide of their conquest was advancing; since then it has been slowly but certainly receding. On three successive occasions their naval power has been destroyed by the combined fleets of other nations, and twice has England participated in this de struction. In 1571, at Lepanto, the fleets of Spain, Genoa, Malta, Venice, and Pius V., combined to destroy their navy; again in 1770 they were defeated by the fleet of Russia aided by Englishmen, in the passage of Scio; once more, fifty-seven years later, in 1827, at N avarino the Turkish navy was annihilated by the united fleets of England, Russia, and France. The Turks have not un frequently been called our ancient allies; it will be found on referring to history that they might with greater truth be called 'our ancient enemies, ' as up to 1840 we were nearly always allied against them. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes in the Thirty Days War Between Greece Turkey, 1897 There was a. General opinion, at any rate, that, whether something was done or not, the days of the Turkish Empire were numbered. The Sultan appeared to have been smitten by that insanity which is known to precede de struction by heaven; and it was therefore illogically argued that heaven wished to destroy him. People who hesitated to stake a penny on the protection of the helpless, found justi fication in the text, Vengeance is mine: I will repay, saith the Lord, and in leaving further action to a higher power they chose a course which seemed to them at once secure, inevitable, and cheap. Turkey had been so long reported rotten as well as cruel that many supposed it would fall to pieces of itself, and it seemed hardly worth while to interfere when the punishment for crime was working itself out so satisfactorily without our aid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the East: An Illustrated History of the Conflict Between Russia and Turkey With a Review of the Eastern Question The author of this work has made the Eastern Question for nearly twenty. Years a subject of constant and special study. As a member of the editorial staff of the New York Tribune, and contributor to other daily and weekly papers of New York, he has had many occasions to discuss it editorially in its various aspects, and as editor of and contributor to several cyclopaedias 'and other publications, he has made himself familiar with the entire literature on this subject. A large amount of information had in this way been accumulated when the new Eastern war began. The general interest which the civilized world takes in this new effort to solve the Eastern Question, appeared to him a suitable occasion to com bine the results of his former studies with a history of the Eastern war, into a comprehensive work on the Eastern Question and the Eastern war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russo-Turkish War The eyes of thinking people are now turned to the great struggle in Eastern Europe for the supremacy of the Bosphorus, and to the effort of the Slavonic races of the Danube to throw off the Turkish yoke. The desire of the Russians to possess themselves of Constantinople is as old as the nation itself. It has its origin, not in political ambition only, but in a determination to rescue from infidel bondage their brothers of the Slavonic race and of the Orthodox Church. The posi tion of the Russian Christians under the Tartar domination was very like the present position of the Christians in Turkey. For some time after the conquest, Russia was ruled as Bulgaria is now; then she obtained her rights and powers similar to those of Servia and Rou mania at the present day; and ultimately she gained complete inde pendence. Thus the Russians long formed the vanguard in the cause of Slavonic emancipation. They were the first of the Slavonic people to fall under the Tartar yoke, and the first to emancipate themselves. This they have not forgotten; and we cannot wonder that they should now sympathize with those kindred races which are striving to follow their example. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kismet or the Doom of Turkey This little work was first issued in the autumn of last year (1853), when I humbly conceived that the costly and dangerous extremity of a war with Russia might yet be avoided; and that every effort, however weak, which tended to the preservation of peace, was praiseworthy in itself. I also considered it as a matter of the highest consequence that, if our Government were to go to war, with Turkey and France for allies, they should be warned beforehand what sort of allies the Turks were likely, or rather sure, to prove themselves.
