This book was released on 1983 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser doppler velocimeter measurements for turbulent flow in a 180 degree bend of square cross-section are presented and discussed. These reveal previously undocumented anisotropic features in the flow. Limited data are also provided for the flow in the downstream tangent. Numerical predictions of the flow configurations were made with two types of turbulence models. The two-equation model yields results in broad agreement with the data but fails to reproduce detailed variations present in the flow. It is shown that while the algebraic stress model can resolive these variations, good spatial resolution of the mean flow field is required.

Book excerpt: A review is presented of the first year of research performed in an investigation aimed at developing a calculation scheme for predicting general three-dimensional flows in curved passages of circular and square cross-section. The experimental component deals with the implementation and validation of a laser-Doppler velocimeter and associated instrumentation. The numerical component deals with the development of a technique for reducing numerical diffusion in the calculation scheme. An update is provided of the current status of the research. A tentative schedule of work for years two and three is also given. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research in this British dissertation was motivated by the desire to provide a comprehensive set of convective heat transfer data against which flow simulation schemes could be tested. Turbulent convecting three-dimensional flow of fluids in curved passages is frequently encountered in thermofluids equipment and systems. Although such flow situations have been too complex to adequately simulate computationally in the past, recent developments have provided physical models coupled with numerical techniques which can be applied to provide such simulations. Nevertheless, it has not been established to what extent such simulations provide accurate predictions and a sufficiently detailed data base does not exist to allow a searching evaluation of computer predictions. It is the conclusion of this collaborative study that significant inadequacies remain in the turbulence and wall models with respect to their ability to predict fully-three dimensional curved turbulent flow. Predictions for the Nusselt number distribution are in rather better agreement with the experimental data than are the hydrodynamic and temperature field predictions.

Book excerpt: A detailed account is given of the experimental and numerical modeling activities for the research period, relating to turbulent flow in a 180 deg curved duct. The measurements show variations in the flow field which, while understood, are not predictable by a K-epsilon model of turbulence. Numerical diffusion and exaggerated physical diffusion in the turbulence model are believed to be the major causes for the discrepancies observed. The new experimental data offered here should be of value for extending the theoretical base for the improved understanding and modeling of 3-D turbulent flows. Recommendations are made for continuing work.

Book Synopsis Modelling of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Flows by : Igor V. Shevchuk

This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.
