Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1977. Thereafter the locations for the biennial symposium have alternated between the USA and Europe. However, the ninth Symposium on Turbu lent Shear Flows was awarded to Japan in recognition of the strong support researchers of the Pacific Rim countries have given previous symposia. The University of Kyoto was the host institution and the meeting was held in the Inter national Conference Hall. The Local Arrangements Committee did a superb job scheduling traditional Japanese dinners and arranging visits to the many cultural treasures in the Kyoto region. The meeting attracted more than 260 offers of papers. Thirty-three sessions were scheduled to accommodate the 138 papers accepted for oral presentation. In addition a poster session was scheduled on each of the three days to accommodate a total of 42 poster presentations. From the presentations at the symposium 24 have been selected for inclusion in this volume. The authors of these papers have revised them taking into consideration comments made during their oral presentation and recommendations made by the Editors. Four subject areas are identified, namely closures and fundamentals, free flows, wall flows, and combustion and recirculating flows. Eminent authorities have prepared introductory articles fot each topic to put the individual contributions in context with each other and with related research.

Book excerpt: The transport of heavy, polydispersed particles and the inter-phase transfer of kinetic energy is measured experimentally in a turbulent shear layer. Specifically, fundamental/subharmonic forcing and conditional-averaging techniques were used to study the particle/turbulence interaction with the large-scale, spanwise, coherent vortices, starting from their initial roll-up through the first pairing event. It is shown that the pairing event plays a homogenizing role on the particulate field, but the amount of homogenization is strongly dependent upon the particle's viscous relaxation time, the eddy turnover time, as well as the time the particles are allowed to interact with each scale prior to a pairing event. Thus, even though the smaller size particles become well-mixed across the structure, the larger sizes are still dispersed in an inhomogeneous fashion. The dispersed/carrier phase coupling was examined through the measurement of conditionally-averaged kinetic energy transfer (which results from the work done to accelerate or decelerate the dispersed phase), as well as the conditionally-averaged particle dissipation (energy dissipated by shear deformation in the carrier phase due to the relative slip between the particles and the carrier fluid).

Book excerpt: This volume presents selected papers from the IUTAM Symposium on Reynolds Number Scaling in Turbulent Flow, convened in Princeton, NJ, USA, September I1-13, 2002. The behavior ofturbulence at high Reynolds number is interesting from a fundamental point of view, in that most theories of turbulence make very specific predictions in the limit of infinite Reynolds number. From a more practical point of view, there exist many applications that involve turbulent flow where the Reynolds numbers are extremely large. For example, large vehicles such as submarines and commercial transports operate at Reynolds 9 numbers based on length ofthe order oft0 , and industrial pipe flows cover a 7 very wide range of Reynolds numbers up to 10 • Many very important applications of high Reynolds number flow pertain to atmospheric and other geophysical flows where extremely high Reynolds numbers are the rule rather than the exception, and the understanding of climate changes and the prediction of destructive weather effects hinges to some extent on our appreciation ofhigh-Reynolds number turbulence behavior. The important effects of Reynolds number on turbulence has received a great deal of recent attention. The objective of the Symposium was to bring together many of the world's experts in this area to appraise the new experimental results, discuss new scaling laws and turbulence models, and to enhance our mutual understanding of turbulence.
