Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930’s. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M´ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Book excerpt: Characterization of freestream disturbances and their effect on laminar boundary layer transition is of great importance in high-speed wind tunnel testing, where significant differences between the behavior of scale-model and free-flight transition have long been noted. However, the methods traditionally used to perform this characterization in low-speed flows present significant difficulties when applied to supersonic and especially hypersonic wind tunnels. The design and theory of a focusing laser differential interferometer (FLDI) instrument, originally invented by Smeets at the Institut Saint-Louis in the 1970s and used recently by Parziale in the CalTech T5 shock tunnel, is presented. It is a relatively-simple, non-imaging common-path interferometer for measuring refractive signals from transition and turbulence, and it has a unique ability to look through facility windows, ignore sidewall boundary-layers and vibration, and concentrate only on the refractive signal near a pair of sharp beam foci in the core flow. The instrument's low cost and ease of implementation make it a promising alternative to traditional hot-wire anemometry and particle-based methods for turbulence characterization. Benchtop experiments using a turbulent supersonic air jet demonstrate its focusing ability, frequency response, unwanted signal rejection, and ease of use. The instrument is used to optically interrogate the flow in the Penn State University Supersonic Wind Tunnel and USAF AEDC Hypervelocity Tunnel 9 for measurement of the overall intensity and spectra of freestream disturbances. Precise characterization of the strength and spectral content of the disturbances provides insight into their nature and potential effect upon boundary layer transition. A special feature of the FLDI instrument used here is the replacement of traditional fixed Wollaston prisms with variable Sanderson prisms for laser-beam separation and recombination.

The requirements and pitfalls involved in the use of hot wire anemometers in sypersonic flows are addressed and the methods used for data acquisition and reduction are detailed. Unfortunately in most flows of practical interest, local fluctuation levels exceed those for which reliable hot wire turbulence measurements can be expected. However, our recent developments in laser velocimetry facilitate the non-intrusive, linear measurement of high speed turbulent flows. Measurements of zero pressure gradient and ramp induced adverse pressure gradient flows are presented. The results emphasize the need for combined hot wire and laser velocimeter studies to determine the reliable and useful ranges of both instruments.

Measurements included the velocity distribution along the nozzle centerline and flow over a diamond airfoil in a Mach 3 tunnel and velocity profiles for a turbulent boundary layer in a Mach 4.8 facility. The shock strength was varied, using three wedge shock generators with turning angles of 50, 70, and 100. Each flow field was studied at four locations, X = %1.326o, 06o, 1.326o, 2.64%, relative to the shock wave/boundary layer interaction. An additional streamwise profile, parallel to the wall at a height of = 0.66. This study showed that the velocity fluctuations (%, %) were energized by the shock wave/boundary layer interaction, and while remaining at a higher value than the upstream stations, decreased in value with distance downstream of the interaction. The Reynolds shear stress - %pu'v' followed a similar pattern, sharply increasing immediately after the interaction and dissipating with distance downstream of the interaction.

Book excerpt: An advanced laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV), deemed the 'comprehensive LDV', is designed to acquire fully-resolved turbulence structural measurements in high Reynolds number two- and three-dimensional turbulent boundary layers. The new instrument combines, for the first time, new techniques allowing for the direct measurement of particle acceleration and sub-measurement-volume-scale position resolution so that second-order 3D particle trajectories may be measured at high repetitions. Using these measurements, several terms in the Reynolds stress transport equations may be directly estimated, giving new data for modeling and understanding the processes leading to the transport of turbulence in boundary layer flows. Measurements utilizing the CompLDV technologies are presented and include turbulence dissipation rate and fluctuating velocity-pressure gradient correlations that have been measured in 2D and 3D turbulent boundary layers using the unique capabilities of the 'comprehensive' LDV. Many of these measurements are the first of their kind ever acquired in high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The flat-plate turbulent boundary layer is studied at several Reynolds numbers up to Re-theta ~7500 to examine Reynolds numbers effects on terms such as the velocity-pressure gradient correlation and the dissipation rate in the Reynolds transport equations. Measurements are also presented in a pressure-driven three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer created upstream from a wing-body junction. The current results complement the extensive data from previous studies and provide even richer depth of knowledge on the most completely-documented 3D boundary layer flow in existence. Further measurements include the effects of high free-stream turbulence on flat plate turbulent boundary layers and a wing/body junction flow that is similar to a gas turbine flow.
