Book excerpt: A test was conducted to obtain nonintrusive measurements in the flow field about an axisymmetric nozzle afterbody with a cold, underexpanded jet, M sub j=1.563, in a parallel free stream, M sub alpha = 0.6. Reynolds shear stress and two components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a two-color Bragg-diffracted laser Doppler velocimeter. Additional experimental data include the afterbody surface pressure distribution and laser vapor screen flow visualization of the jet plume. A multiple seeding technique was used to investigate the bimodal velocity probability distributions observed in the jet mixing region. (Author).

X-wire hot-wire probes mounted on a moving shuttle were used to eliminate rectification errors due to flow reversals in the intermittent region of the jet. Moments of velocity fluctuatuions up to fourth order were measured to characterize turbulent transport in the jet and to evaluate current models for triple moments that occur in the Reynolds stress equations. Fourth moments were very well described in terms of second moments by the quasi-gaussian approximation across the entire jet including the intermittent region. Profiles of third moments were found to be significantly different from earlier measurements. The Basic triple moment model that inlcluded turbulent production and models for the dissipations and the return to isotropy part of the pressure correlations was found to be unsatisfactory. When mean-strain production and a model for rapid pressure correlations were also included, predictions were satisfactory in the fully turbulent region.

Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

Book excerpt: An experimental study of compressibility effects on the large scale structure and outer variable scaling laws of a coflowing turbulent jet was partially completed. Results showed distinct large scale structure and classical incompressible scaling where the convective Mach number has decreased to subsonic values. At supersonic convective Mach numbers no large scale structure was seen and incompressible scalings were dramatically modified. Experiments also showed strong effects due to oblique shock wave interactions with combustion in supersonic turbulent jets. OH PLIF imaging measurements comparing subsonic and supersonic jets documented striking differences in their mixing and combustion properties. Combined OH/CH PLIF imaging measurements found large differences in the combustion properties of jet flames created by small differences in the fuel injection design. A theoretical study of density effects due to combustion heat release on the outer variable scalings of turbulent shear flows was completed. This study produced a general methodology for predicting the changes in such quantities as growth rates, velocity decay, and entrainment and mixing rates due to heat release. Comparisons with measured heat release effects in the literature, including planar and axisymmetric jet flames as well as mixing layers, showed excellent agreement with this general approach.

Book excerpt: Methods and results of an experimental study of turbulence parameters for a plane free jet at high subsonic velocities, using hot wire anemometer signals outputing directly to an on-line computer controlled data acquisition system are reported. The apparatus studied had a nozzle exit, 1 x 10 cm, designed for two-dimensional flow. Two measurement planes at 25 and 50 jet widths downstream were chosen to provide measurements to compare with existing data for the facility. Nozzle velocities of M=0.4 and M=0.6 were chosen for the same reason. The techniques for employing hot-wire anemometry coupled with computer controlled data acquisition are described. A comparison of data obtained with the computer is made to data previously obtained by more traditional methods. A comparison of linearized and non-linearized anemometer output is made. A new calibration technique, also utilizing the data acquisition system to greatly decrease the sensor calibration time, was also developed. The turbulence parameters compared are mean velocity, turbulence intensities, micro-scale, and integral scale of turbulence. The computer determined parameters compared favorably in all cases with the already available data. (Author).
