Book excerpt: The basic objective of this research was to identify, develop and recommend turbulence models which could be incorporated into CFD codes used in the design of the National AeroSpace Plane vehicles. To accomplish this goal, a combined effort consisting of experimental and theoretical phases was undertaken. The experimental phase consisted of a literature survey to collect and assess a database of well documented experimental flows, with emphasis on high speed or hypersonic flows, which could be used to validate turbulence models. Since it was anticipated that this database would be incomplete and would need supplementing, additional experiments in the NASA Ames 3.5-Foot Hypersonic Wind Tunnel (HWT) were also undertaken. The theoretical phase consisted of identifying promising turbulence models through applications to simple flows, and then investigating more promising models in applications to complex flows. The complex flows were selected from the database developed in the first phase of the study. For these flows it was anticipated that model performance would not be entirely satisfactory, so that model improvements or corrections would be required. The primary goals of the investigation were essentially achieved. A large database of flows was collected and assessed, a number of additional hypersonic experiments were conducted in the Ames HWT, and two turbulence models (kappa-epsilon and kappa-omega models with corrections) were determined which gave superior performance for most of the flows studied and are now recommended for NASP applications. Book excerpt: We summarize some modifications to the usual closure approximations for statistical models of turbulence that are necessary for use with compressible fluids at all Mach numbers. We concentrate here on the gradient-flu approximation for the turbulent heat flux, on the buoyancy production of turbulence kinetic energy, and on a modification of the Smagorinsky model to include buoyancy. In all cases, there are pressure gradient terms that do not appear in the incompressible models and are usually omitted in compressible-flow models. Omission of these terms allows unphysical rates of entropy change.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the field of compressible turbulence and compressible turbulent flows across a broad speed range through a unique complimentary treatment of both the theoretical foundations and the measurement and analysis tools currently used. For the computation of turbulent compressible flows, current methods of averaging and filtering are presented so that the reader is exposed to a consistent development of applicable equation sets for both the mean or resolved fields as well as the transport equations for the turbulent stress field. For the measurement of turbulent compressible flows, current techniques ranging from hot-wire anemometry to PIV are evaluated and limitations assessed. Characterizing dynamic features of free shear flows, including jets, mixing layers and wakes, and wall-bounded flows, including shock-turbulence and shock boundary-layer interactions, obtained from computations, experiments and simulations are discussed. Describes prediction methodologies including the Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) method, scale filtered methods and direct numerical simulation (DNS) Presents current measurement and data analysis techniques Discusses the linkage between experimental and computational results necessary for validation of numerical predictions Meshes the varied results of computational and experimental studies in both free and wall-bounded flows to provide an overall current view of the field

Book excerpt: The ability of kappa-omega models to predict compressible turbulent skin friction in hypersonic boundary layers is investigated. Although uncorrected two-equation models can agree well with correlations for hot-wall cases, they tend to perform progressively worse - particularly for cold walls - as the Mach number is increased in the hypersonic regime. Simple algebraic models such as Baldwin-Lomax perform better compared to experiments and correlations in these circumstances. Many of the compressibility corrections described in the literature are summarized here. These include corrections that have only a small influence for kappa-omega models, or that apply only in specific circumstances. The most widely-used general corrections were designed for use with jet or mixing-layer free shear flows. A less well-known dilatation-dissipation correction intended for boundary layer flows is also tested, and is shown to agree reasonably well with the Baldwin-Lomax model at cold-wall conditions. It exhibits a less dramatic influence than the free shear type of correction. There is clearly a need for improved understanding and better overall physical modeling for turbulence models applied to hypersonic boundary layer flows. Rumsey, C. L. Book excerpt: A theoretical model consists of the Reynolds-averaged 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with turbulence incorporated using the algebraic turbulent eddy viscosity model of Baldwin and Lomax, This year research efforts focused on both 2-D and 3-D turbulent interactions. A theoretical model was examined for a series of separated 2-D compression corner flows at Mach 2 and 3. Calculations were performed for four separate compression corners using 2-D compressible Navier-Stodes conde with MacCormack's hybrid algorithm. Results were compared to earlier computations using the Beam-Warming algorithm, and recent experiment data for turbulent Reynolds stresses. Calculated Reynolds stresses were observed to differ significantly from experimental measurements due to the inability of the turbulence model to incorporate the multiple scale effects of the turbulence structure downstream of reattachment. Computed results using the MacCormack hybrid algorithm were observed to be insensitive to the Courant number. The 3-D turbulence interactions research concentrated on the 3-D sharp fin and on the 3-D swept compression corner. In the former case, the computed flowfield for the 20 deg sharp fin at Mach 3 and a Reynolds number of 930,000 was compared with the calculated results of Horstman (who used the Jones-Launder turbulence model) and experimental data of the Princeton Gas Dynamics Lab. Overall comparison with experiment was very good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, and since engineering applications nearly always involve turbulence effects, the reliability of CFD analysis depends increasingly on the performance of the turbulence models. This series of symposia provides a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The papers in this set of proceedings were presented at the 5th International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements in September 2002. They look at a variety of areas, including: Turbulence modelling; Direct and large-eddy simulations; Applications of turbulence models; Experimental studies; Transition; Turbulence control; Aerodynamic flow; Aero-acoustics; Turbomachinery flows; Heat transfer; Combustion systems; Two-phase flows. These papers are preceded by a section containing 6 invited papers covering various aspects of turbulence modelling and simulation as well as their practical application, combustion modelling and particle-image velocimetry.

Book excerpt: A numerical study has been performed using a finite-difference boundary layer computer program that includes corrections to the equations of motion for longitudinal curvature and allows the static pressure to be specified as a known function of x and y. Calculations with and without the corrections for longitudinal curvature and pressure gradient normal to be the local surface have been compared to experimental measurements of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer flow over a surface with concave longitudinal curvature. Substantially improved agreement with experimental measurements is obtained for the calculations including corrections for wall curvature and pressure gradient normal to the local surface for density profile, skin friction coefficient, and boundary-layer integral properties.

Book excerpt: A compressible turbulence model based on the kappa-zeta (enstrophy) model of Robinson et al. is developed. The model incorporates a new compressibility correction model that is quite different from previous models. Results are compared to the mixing layer data compiled by Settles and Dodson. It is shown that the predictions of the theory are in good agreement with experiment. Moreover, the present model is superior to the kappa-epsilon model with traditional compressibility corrections.
