Book excerpt: Although dating back to Egyptian antiquity, carpet as we know it is relatively new. Prior to the 1950s, the means for making carpet was expensive and time-consuming, unaffordable for most homeowners. During the '50s, tufting - a process previously used to create bedspreads, bathrobes and throw rugs - was adapted for carpet manufacture. Over succeeding decades, machines advanced dramatically in speed, efficiency and patterning capabilities. Tufting Legacies recounts the history of the tufting machine industry, as well as legacies forged by the hard work, diligence and determination of true pioneers - Joe Cobble, Lewis Card, Sr., and Roy Card - who viewed problems and obstacles as opportunities to achieve the inconceivable. It's also a story of the American dream embodied in real life, boys growing up in the Depression era that had little materially but, "we just thought that was the way it was, and how it was supposed to be." Those humble beginnings helped motivate these young men as they honed their skills in making machine parts and later applying that expertise to build tufting machines. If someone in 1950 had asked Lewis and Roy about how to develop those into the huge, computer-controlled machines used worldwide throughout the carpet industry today, they might have responded, "You can't get there from here." But they did get there, one small step, one giant step, one minor modification, one major breakthrough at a time. Tufting Legacies tells how it happened.

Book excerpt: This colourfully illustrated guide introduces new and established crafters to the traditional skills of hooking and its close relations prodding, punching and tufting. Textile artist Lynne Stein gives advice on materials, tools and equipment, and provides step-by-step directions – accompanied by vibrant instructional photographs – for 20 projects exploring playful design and quirky creativity, including rugs, cushions, bags and personal accessories. There are also lots of helpful hints on sustainably repurposing fabrics, yarns, and other precious and useful items that might otherwise be discarded. A list of international museum collections is also included, as are examples of the work of both historical and contemporary artists and designers such as Evelyn Ackerman, Anya Paintsil, Anna Perach, Joan Moshimer, and Lady Emma Tennant. A brief history of the traditional textile craft of rag rug making and other techniques, and ideas for their inclusion in community projects all demonstrate the vast potential for experimentation, self-expression and creativity within these processes. This book has plenty to fire and inspire and will encourage you further on your creative textile journey, making both decorative and functional items.

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Bacon Custer began writing articles and making speaking engagements praising the glory of what she presented as her "martyred" husband, General George Armstrong Custer. Her three books—Boots and Saddles (1885), Tenting on the Plains—(1887), and Following the Guidon (1890) aimed at glorifying her dead husband's memory. Though generally considered to be largely factually accurate, they were clearly slanted in Custer's favor. Her efforts were successful. The image of a steely Custer leading his men against overwhelming odds only to be wiped out while defending their position to the last man became as much a part of American lore as the Alamo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title suggests, The Moonstone Legacy picks up the challenge of the last line of the famous Victorian novel by Wilkie Collins - "e;What will be the next adventure of the Moonstone? Who can tell?"e; The trilogy dives headlong into a compelling family saga as fourteen year-old Lizzy Abercrombie's mother dies in a tragic accident on the full moon. But was it really an accident? Lizzy discovers that her death may be linked to a mysterious family curse. Determined to find the truth, her quest takes her to the Temple of the Moon in India, where she uncovers the terrible past of her ancestor George Abercrombie. But even as she discovers that the curse was just an old wives' tale, the real truth puts her in mortal danger from a succession of ruthless enemies, culminating in a showdown at OneWorld, a sinister spiritual theme park in the desert of Almeria in southern Spain."e;Hugely enjoyable"e;, "e;most entertaining and enlightening"e;, "e;educational"e;, and "e;excellent"e;. These are some of the words used by many reviewers (who include William Dalrymple and Michael Morpurgo) to describe The Moonstone Legacy trilogy. And those are just the words beginning with 'e'. The trilogy defies categorisation - part East/West epic, part historical fiction, part family saga, part mystery adventure, part spiritual exploration and part science fiction, this fascinating multi-faceted book appeals to readers of all ages, colours and creeds, and has them"e;gripped to the pages"e; as they follow Lizzy Abercrombie, the young heroine, through her exciting adventures towards the trilogy's breathtakingly cosmic conclusion.Themes of gender equality and religious tolerance seamlessly meld with explorations of beliefs, multiculturalism and the nature of the universe as this sizzling page-turner literally plays out under the waxing and waning of the moon AA- uniquely, every one of its hundred and seventy chapters shows the exact phase of the moon during which events take place.Praise for the Moonstone Legacy TrilogyAnja C Andersen, Professor of Dark Cosmology, University of Copenhagen "e; 'Why is the universe so suited to life?' In successfully dramatising this compelling question, The Moonstone Legacy takes the reader on a thrilling voyage of mind and imagination, yet at the same time keeps us firmly rooting for our brave, funny and funky heroine through all her terrifying ordeals."e; Michael Berkeley, presenter of BBC Radio 3's "e;Private Passions"e;"e;A compulsive and entertaining read with gripping modulations every few bars. Hugely enjoyable."e; Susyn Blair-Hunt, MsD (Doctor of Metaphysics), Psychic, Astrologer, "e;The Moonstone Legacy is the most entertaining and enlightening book I've read in years! It speaks to all of us on a deep and resounding level, reawakening the childlike wonder and unfettered courage we should all live our lives by. If you read nothing else this year, the transformational power of The Moonstone Legacy is a must!"e; Praise for Book One, The Moonstone Legacy William Dalrymple"e;A most ingenious and imaginative sequel to my favourite Victorian novel."e; Michael Morpurgo"e;A compelling East-West adventure takes us from the Temple of the Moon on the remote coast of Gujarat, India, to an Anglo-Indian mansion on the Yorkshire moors. A sumptuous saga with an exciting cliff-hanger ending."e;Lovereading.co.uk "e;Book of the Month"e; "e;Beginning where Wilkie Collins' classic left off, it's hard to believe The Moonstone Legacy is a debut for the quality of the writing is exceptional and has a real timeless quality about it. The story itself is a terrific mix of mysterious quest and compelling family saga that visits the cultures of both East and West...you will be utterly gripped to the pages."e;

Book excerpt: Komaroff (curator of Islamic Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art) and Carboni (curator of Islamic Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art) produced this fine catalog to accompany a major show of Ilkhanid (as the Mongol dynasty was called after conversion to Islam) art exhibited at the authors' museums in New York and Los Angeles in 2002-2003. Most of the manuscripts, metalwork, textiles, ceramics, and other finely decorated objects were created in Iran. Many objects are also included from the Yuan Dynasty in China, during which the Mongols ruled. Eight full-length essays are built around the objects of the exhibition and other works, all depicted in color. The essays describe the history, culture, courtly life, artistic exchanges, religious art, arts of the book, and creation of a new visual language. Distributed by Yale U. Press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an accumulation of Master Marvin Smalheisers writing in the Tai Chi magazine from its inception in 1977 till 2016. Master Smalheiser was the editor and the owner of Tai Chi magazine, and he published only an article related to tai chi. He was a practitioner as well as a teacher. He lived what he thought was the best way of lifehelpful, humble, and down-to-earth. This book covers many aspects and benefits of tai chi as a martial art that Master Smalheiser felt to write about. Some of the topics are meditation, relaxation, self-defense, the types of tai chi, history, health, personal interviews with masters in the US and abroad, and more. It was Master Smalheisers wish to write books about tai chi, but his untimely death did not allow him to get the books done. I do not know much about tai chi; therefore, I gathered some of his writings and made this book to benefit all the tai chi practitioners as Master Smalheiser wanted. It is my wish that the tai chi enthusiasts will enjoy the book and remember Master Marvin Smalheiser.

Book excerpt: A reluctant earl matches wits with an illegitimate heiress in the first novel of the Legacy Trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Catherine Coulter. Marcus Wynham is passionate, quick to rage, and just as quick to laughter. He’s tough, opinionated, domineering, and known as the devil’s own son. Josephina Cochrain is serene and aloof, wearing her nickname—“the Duchess”—as proudly as if she were truly born for the title. Always in control, her smiles are as rare as bawdy jests in the pulpit. She is self-reliant once she realizes that a very special talent can make her so, a talent that will take everyone by surprise.... Marcus never asked to become the Earl of Chase. The Duchess never asked to inherit her father’s fortune. And neither of them asked for their fates to become so inextricably intertwined....
