Book excerpt: A combination of the books "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers" that is perfect not just for police officers but also for the future recruits. This is not to say, "Forget everything you learned in the academy!" Why would anyone advise that? Elements of criminal law and how to work your weapon and handcuffs among the other things you learn are extremely crucial for your safety and security. "This profession can chew you up and spit you out," said Police Chief N. Gang in a conversation I had with him recently. Did I mention he has been in law enforcement for over 30 years! Beyond the undeniably crucial skills we gather from the police academy, is a human being, you! While emphasizing and combining the concepts discussed in "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers", this book endeavors to capture the silent thieves, taking time to deal with the pebble in the shoe. Back in rookie school (2007) and as of the writing of this book, there has been little to no mention of financial freedom, or how to cope with on-the-job stress or exposure to trauma. This book is your first step toward taking better care of yourself so you can ultimately be the hero for those who call 911. Strive for wellness, success, and happiness with the strategies in this field manual.

Book excerpt: In the seventh installment of the Hanne Wilhelmsen series “that demands to be read—and the more quickly, the better” (Bookreporter), the brilliant female detective must untangle the complex and bitter history of one of Oslo’s wealthiest families after a celebratory get-together ends in a shocking multivictim homicide. Shortly before Christmas, four people are found shot dead at the home of the Stahlbergs, a wealthy Oslo family of shipping merchants notorious for their miserliness and infighting. Three of the victims are members of the family, and the fourth is an outsider, seemingly out of place. Cake had been set out in the living room and a bottle of champagne had been opened but not yet poured. Yes, family gatherings during the holidays can be difficult, but why did this one become a bloodbath? As Hanne Wilhelmsen investigates the case alongside her longtime police partner, Billy T., motives for the murders emerge in abundance; each surviving member of the Stahlberg family had good reason to want the victims dead. As she searches for the killer, Hanne will once again risk everything to find out the truth. But this time, will she go too far? “When you think of Scandinavian noir, names like Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, and Camilla Lackberg probably come to mind, not Anne Holt. That may be about to change….Holt consistently delivers in her series. And Beyond the Truth…is her best yet…If you aren’t familiar with Anne Holt’s Hanne Wilhelmsen novels…dive in with this one—number 7—but then do yourself a favor and binge-read the first six” (Entertainment Weekly).

Could you face it every day and remain sane? For years I've been kept like an animal in a cage. A pet to please, a slave to serve. They stole my dignity, revoked my right as a mother and wife. Before being taken, I was radiant, joyous even. My elders often spoke with great reverence about who I was to become. A spiritual example to my community, yet I find it hard to see the purpose when looking in the mirror and seeing the scars of a woman I no longer recognize. Though many try and silence our pain, I open my palms to show you the evidence of suppression. My name is True Mouringdove a descendant of an Indigenous Tribe. This story is not a reenactment of victory and triumph. But a willingness to continue, under the most wicked of circumstances. I am here, and I am a survivor. But that doesn't mean my captors will have the same blessing. TW: Deals with Sex-Trafficking ⚠18+ Mature Content, Explicit Language, Alcohol & Drug Use, Sexual and Violent Scenes, Trigger Warning⚠

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Sithannan’s book ‘Police Investigation-Powers, Tactics and Techniques’ 4th Edition 2022, every Police Officer will be able to do a comprehensive investigation even if he/ she just follow the checklists given. The book is written in simple language, which can be easily understood by all Police Officers and will serve as a valuable tool/guide for every officer who has to investigate a crime, participate in the All India Police Duty Meet etc. This is a more exhaustive treatise than his initial one, prepared when he was working in the Police Training College and which is still used by Investigating Officers all over the state of Tamil Nadu. In his present work titled ‘Police Investigation: Powers, Tactics and Techniques’, the author has meticulously catalogued the tools available to a police officer to become a successful investigator. He has carefully listed the duties of Police Officers at various stages of the investigation and the legal and statutory supports officially available to an investigating officer. The book contains 25 chapters and 4 annexures. In all the chapters, the author describes the problems at hand in elaborate detail, supported by relevant statistical and legal data, drawn from authentic sources. The first chapter includes a discussion on the development of settled society, the origin of law in society and the emergence of military and police in developing societies. In the following chapters, the author has given an exhaustive account of the role and powers of Police in the registration of offences and taking up of the investigation. He has also discussed problems encountered by a Police Officer during the investigation, the trial till the judgement. The book dexterously deals with problems such as the jurisdiction of a Police Officer, the dying declaration of victims, the conducting of inquest, arrest, interrogation and confession of the accused, etc. Apart from Police Officers, Advocates, Law and Judicial Officers would also find this book very useful as a reference book. The reference to judgements pertaining to a host of criminal cases during the period 1965-2018 merit careful study by the guardians of Law. The checklist provided at the end of each chapter can serve as a ready-reckoner to the Police Officers at various stages of the investigation. A trainee and a veteran equally will find this book a useful aid. To cite an example, under chapter 14, “Arrest”, he has cited 37 landmark judgements. By reading these fourteen pages alone one can avert many a pitfall. While writing this book, the academic pursuit of the author is in full bloom, as he has drawn valuable and authenticated data from various enactments, official documents, court judgements and a vast domain of related literature of national and international significance. Moreover, in this scholarly work, the author does not limit himself to expressing his sentiments of fellowship to the investigating Police Officers but also is concerned more about their legitimate and authorized duties, responsibilities, jurisdiction, rights of the accused and the natural processes of the long arm of the law. That the Author’s utopian ideal of no innocent person should be punished and no offender should go unpunished can be seen to dominate the whole message of the book. For this purpose, the Author has taken extra pains to give a balanced treatment of the whole problem of crime and its investigation.

Book excerpt: "Using case studies and the results of extensive fieldwork, this book considers the nature of state power and legal violence in liberal democracies by focusing on the interaction between law, science, and policing in India. The postcolonial Indian police have often been accused of using torture in both routine and exceptional criminal cases, but they, and forensic psychologists, have claimed that lie detectors, brain scans, and narcoanalysis (the use of "truth serum," Sodium Pentothal) represent a paradigm shift away from physical torture; most state high courts in India have upheld this rationale. The Truth Machines examines the emergence and use of these three scientific techniques to analyze two primary themes. First, the book questions whether existing theoretical frameworks for understanding state power and legal violence are adequate to explain constant innovations of the state. Second, it explores the workings of law, science, and policing in the everyday context to generate a theory of state power and legal violence, challenging the monolithic frameworks about this relationship, based on a study of both state and non-state actors. Jinee Lokaneeta argues that the attempt to replace physical torture with truth machines in India fails because it relies on a confessional paradigm that is contiguous with torture. Her work also provides insights into a police institution that is founded and refounded in its everyday interactions between state and non-state actors. Theorizing a concept of Contingent State, this book demonstrates the disaggregated, and decentered nature of state power and legal violence, creating possible sites of critique and intervention"--

It bothers me that the lyrics for Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I've Got Love in My Tummy are taking up room that could be occupied by something more life-relevant. Still, I've often found myself the person people come to when they want to know something, but aren't sure where to find it, and I enjoy providing that service. Quora is a great outlet for people like me. I stumbled on the site a little more than a year ago, and almost 600 answered questions later, there's enough material for a book. Law enforcement is a passion for me, not for the power trip or the adrenaline rush, but because it can be a truly noble vocation when done right. People depend on law enforcement officers to protect them from predators, see that the bad guys are held to account for their acts, and establish order out of chaos. The authority that cops have is a sacred public trust. Most officers carry out their duties proudly and honorably, but there will always be a few who abuse that trust. The short essays here are about both sides of that issue. These answers are also about separating some of the myths of police work from the reality. There have been so many dramatic depictions of law enforcement, some of them very realistic and others that seem realistic, that people tend to believe they know how cops work and why they do what they do. Here, I've tried to give you the straight scoop, knowledge accumulated from my own experience and from knowing cops from all over the country and the world. Some of it isn't flattering, but otherwise it wouldn't be honest. I hope you enjoy and benefit from these insights into police work. Tim Dees EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Is It TRUE That Parking Patrol Officers Can NOT Stop Writing A Ticket Once They Have Started? Some agencies do in fact have a policy that an officer, police, parking or otherwise, can't discard a citation once they have started writing it. Virtually all of them have some process for voiding a citation issued in error once the citation has been issued, but this process is carefully monitored to prevent abuse. Absent a monitored process, the system is easily manipulated. Someone makes a call to a person in the police department who has influence, and that person contacts the officer who issued the ticket. They persuade the officer to void the ticket. If the voided ticket appears to be correct in format, e.g. license plate matches the vehicle description, violation is appropriate for that location, etc. then whoever is in charge of reviewing the voided citations is supposed to follow up and find out if the citation was voided for a legitimate reason or as a favor to someone. Most of the time, when the issuing officer has started the citation form (and many of them are generated via handheld computer these days) and the violator runs up and asks them to stop, the violation is legitimate, and the officer has already looked around for the driver of the vehicle. The typical complaint is "but I was just gone for a minute" (which may or may not be true). In any event, there is seldom a provision in the law for parking there for a minute-you aren't supposed to park there at all. So, in short, it's usually true that the officer is not supposed to stop once they have begun issuing the citation. Buy the book to read more!

Book excerpt: I can still feel the chills as I recall the scene on Fifth Avenue below the editor’s office in August 1997. This was really happening. Justice had prevailed. Two people were given their lives back because of the journalism by my team, the courage of our reporter and photographer. Now, their family was gathering in front of the building, holding copies of an EXTRA edition of The Herald-Dispatch that declared their freedom, holding signs and crying tears of gratitude. This was why, I was sure, the Founders had created the First Amendment. We had stood up to a foreign government and forced our own to do the right thing. Stories would not always end so elegantly. Justice and good journalism do not always win. There would be decades of frustration between moments of celebration. But this is a moment when journalism won. And it felt amazing.

Book excerpt: With the rising occurrence of human caused, natural, and technological crises, Investigating the Design and Implementation of Operational Safety Plans for Crisis at Higher Education Institutions offers guiding principles, implementation factors, and best practices for creating more effective operational safety plans at higher education institutions. In many cases, limited resources prior to a crisis may lead to inadequate planning that hampers implementation. Additionally, operational safety plans typically are created or revised in a reactive manner after the fact. As the result of an exhaustive literature review, the author determined that, unlike other fields, effective best practices for operational safety planning are either unknown to the institutions that need them most or institutional factors and financial constraints prevent them from implementing them in full.
