Book excerpt: How some design appears to be something that it is not—by beautifying, amusing, substituting, or deceiving. Pretense design pretends to be something that it is not. Pretense design includes all kinds of designed objects: a pair of glasses that looks like a fashion accessory rather than a medical necessity, a hotel in Las Vegas that simulates a Venetian ambience complete with canals and gondolas, boiler plates that look like steel but are vinyl. In this book, Danish designer Per Mollerup defines and describes a ubiquitous design category that until now has not had a name: designed objects with an intentional discrepancy between surface and substance, between appearance and reality. Pretense design, he shows us, is a type of material rhetoric; it is a way for physical objects to speak persuasively, most often to benefit users but sometimes to deceive them. After explaining the means and the meanings of pretense design, Mollerup describes four pretense design applications, providing a range of examples for each: beautification, amusement, substitution, and deception. Beautification, he explains, includes sunless tanning, high heels, and even sporty accessories for a family car. Amusement includes forms of irrational otherness—columns that don't hold anything up, an old building's façade that hides a new building, a new Chinese town that mimics an old European town. Substitution pretends to be a natural thing: plastic laminate is a substitute for wood, Corian a substitute for marble, and prosthetics substitute for human organs. Deception doesn't just bend the truth; it suspends it. Soldiers wear camouflage to hide; hunters use decoys to attract their prey; malware hides in a harmless program only to wreak havoc on a user's computer. With Pretense Design, Per Mollerup adds a new concept to design thinking.

Through wit and sheer force of will, Ash Cohen raised himself and his younger brother Rafe out of the London slums and made them (in his unbiased opinion) the best confidence men in England. Ash is heartbroken when Rafe decides he wants an honest life, but he vows to give his beloved brother what he wants. When Ash hears of a small-town heiress scrambling to get her hands on the dowry held in trust for when she marries, he plans one last desperate scheme: con her and his brother into falling in love. After all, Rafe deserves the best, and Ash can see at once that captivating, lonely Lydia Reeve is the best. Lydia doesn't know why she instinctively trusts the humble stranger who talks his way through her front door and into her life. She just knows she's disappointed when he tries to set her up with his brother. When a terrible family secret comes to light and Rafe disappears, Lydia takes a big risk: she asks Ash to marry her instead. Did Ash choose the perfect wife for his brother...or for himself?

Along with an introduction outlining the central issues in the field, it provides a unique and unrivaled view of contemporary work on the nature of truth, with papers selected from key conferences in 2011 such as Truth Be Told (Amsterdam), Truth at Work (Paris), Paradoxes of Truth and Denotation (Barcelona) and Axiomatic Theories of Truth (Oxford). Studying the nature of the concept of ‘truth’ has always been a core role of philosophy, but recent years have been a boom time in the topic. With a wealth of recent conferences examining the subject from various angles, this collection of essays recognizes the pressing need for a volume that brings scholars up to date on the arguments. Offering academics and graduate students alike a much-needed repository of today’s cutting-edge work in this vital topic of philosophy, the volume is required reading for anyone needing to keep abreast of developments, and is certain to act as a catalyst for further innovation and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is truth objective or relative? What exists independently of our minds? This book is about these two questions. The essays in its pages variously defend and critique answers to each, grapple over the proper methodology for addressing them, and wonder whether either question is worth pursuing. In so doing, they carry on a long and esteemed tradition - for our two questions are among the oldest of philosophical issues, and have vexed almost every major philosopher, from Plato, to Kant to Wittgenstein. Fifteen eminent contributors bring fresh perspectives, renewed energy and original answers to debates which have been the focus of a tremendous amount of interest in the last three decades both within philosophy and the culture at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary focus of this book is to determine if the Greek word for worship (proskuneo), used in John 4: 23-24, includes the concept of bowing the knees or kneeling. In the New Testament, proskuneo is translated as worship sixty times. All of the worship events in the New Testament that included a form of bowing the knees or kneeling has been documented. This task was undertaken using five reliable sources of information or testimony: (1) the testimony of God, or Scripture (1Corinthians 2:1), (2) the testimony of Lexicons or Greek dictionaries, (3) the testimony of Bible translators, (4) the testimony of history, and (5) the testimony of Bible scholars. The book was written with all categories of readers in mind: worship leaders, clergy, college professors, Seminary students, Bible scholars, teachers, graduate school students, Pastors, lay people, seekers, and is suitable as a textbook in all Bible classes that include the subject of worship.

He argues that our talk and thought about such fictional objects takes place within the scope of a pretense, and that we gain little but lose much by accepting fictional realism.

Book excerpt: Pretense Unveiled is a true account of the emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that eight children endured during the late 1950s70s, told through the eyes of the oldest girl, Bella Lorne. Before any substantial healing took place in her own life, she faced many years of an abusive marriage to Jimmie Gore. Mental and physical abuse plagued the eleven-year union and was made worse by the adoption of a foreign child who got caught in the web. Determination to rescue her six smaller siblings from the pedophilia and violence constantly compelled her. Ever aware of Gods abiding grace, she conquered mountains and valleys but only after stepping boldly into the truth of Gods Word. First, though, there were nightmares to face. Would the adopted daughter ever be honest or pure? Would Jimmie ever grow up? Bella learned the hardest way possible that survival depended on truth rather than pretense.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Sider presents a broad new vision of metaphysics centred on the idea of structure. To describe the world well we must use concepts that 'carve at the joints', so that conceptual structure matches reality's structure. This approach illuminates a wide range of topics, such as time, modality, ontology, and the status of metaphysics itself.
