Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law is a symbolic construction and therefore rests on a variety of undertakings. What gives law its meaning is,for some, ideology, for others, the welfare of the majority. However, what is manifest is a conception of the law as a material structure that carries symbols of everyday life. The analyses that are made in the law and semiotics movements show that the laws symbolism cannot be understood by reference only to itself, a strictly legal meaning. It is a symbol that conveys life, a symbol that in itself is contaminated with life, politics, morality and so on. Law and Semiotics is an obvious meeting point between traditions, because it is the place where all the discussions about the law can find a common language. This is a collection of different papers where the institution of the law is investigated, in combination with, and as part of, a multiplicity of sign systems. Firstly, law can be understood as part of a global system of meaning (Part I) ; and, secondly, that despite the homogenising threat of globalisation, the play of legal meaning retains a socio-historical specificity (Part II). The global issues of human migration, human rights, colonisation and transnational power are played out in local spaces, in the public discourses through which they are given localised representation, in moments of activism, and as a tool of subversion. The law is a rhetorical device which at once constitutes these global and local truths but which is also constituted by them.

Book excerpt: Finding Bob is based on one boy’s journey to find the man behind the legendary lyrics. Having left behind a life of slavery in Africa, Mogli’s adventure leads him to the land of lions, pushing the limits of his personal strength and testing the power of the human race. The story opens with imagery of raw Africa—a young boy’s living nightmare of a war-torn country where genocide, rape, and murder are commonplace. As a witness to the tragedy that took his family from this earth and his life, the young boy is taken captive and forced into performing the unthinkable duties of the murderers. He complies, but counter to the anger and fear building inside his little body, the boy musters the strength to escape the cult’s wrath. After days without sleep, due to the haunting scenes relived in his memory, the boy remains a mere shell. He finds some items left behind— the more fortuitous of the lot being a set of keys marked with an address and a Walkman cassette player. The music player baffles the boy, as he is unsure of the technology, but the sound that emerges stays with him. What he initially heard as an odd mix of tunes soon translates into feelings of love, freedom, and power—the comfort he had been missing in his life. The warmth the young boy feels from the music sets him on a mission to find Bob.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hurricane Gilbert: A Jamaican Saga is a story told from the beginning of the island's culture to its current existence. An introduction depicts ships, explorers, the need to occupy, a chronology of conquistadors, natives shocked with reality, the battle for a new hemisphere, slaves scattered in a diaspora, and Michael Manley introducing the politics of change. Fast-forward to the presence of Melvin and Vanessa Lex that is told through the eyes of their son, Michael. It also reveals an antagonist with a need to possess every dollar he could claim. Rooted with love and romance, Michael and Jessica met in high school one day when it rained. He did his best to conceal a fear of lightning and thunder while she was enthralled with his handsome, chiseled demeanor and instantly found love at first sight--a delight distinct readers will appreciate. She blurted out, "Hey, new boy," and thus, the conversation started between two unstoppable forces. Moments later Jessica's father is found dead, drifting in his fisherman's dinghy. Slowly, silently, the reader is exposed to a gutless profile of an antagonist gone loose. Michael is sent off to England to pursue a career path designed by his father. He returned in midsemesters and somberly laid to rest his mother and father. The loss of both parents sent psychological shockwaves into Michael's being, transforming him into a journey; as time progresses, what seemed like a freak accident gradually unfolds as the murder plot that it is. The boy returns from his studies with a bride on his arms, shattering the bond of love in devoted Jessica--a love which directed her not to relinquish. She is forced to make statements like, "I am a twenty-five-year-old virgin in love with a boy I met one day when it rained." Hours earlier, she watched as he became married to another. In only a moment, Michael and his new wife are ambushed by the antagonist whose intent to cover his tracks is laced with blood. A background of Jamaican realities serves as stocking stuffers or a plate of ackee and salt fish as we follow our protagonist through life and death and love situations. At one point, it is climaxing the very moment Hurricane Gilbert creeps across the island to a final resolution as the antagonist is revealed.

Book excerpt: Megawattage sound systems have blasted the electronically-enhanced riddims and tongue-twisting lyrics of Jamaica's dancehall DJs across the globe. This high-energy raggamuffin music is often dismissed by old-school roots reggae fans as a raucous degeneration of classic Jamaican popular music. In this provocative study of dancehall culture, Cooper offers a sympathetic account of the philosophy of a wide range of dancehall DJs: Shabba Ranks, Lady Saw, Ninjaman, Capleton, Buju Banton, Anthony B and Apache Indian. Cooper also demonstrates the ways in which the language of dancehall culture, often devalued as mere 'noise,' articulates a complex understanding of the border clashes which characterize Jamaican society, and analyzes the sound clashes that erupt in the movement of Jamaican dancehall culture across national borders.

Book excerpt: The subject of the book is important in order to show that while the Supreme Court writes decisions and legislators create and modify statutes, music is more invasive and influential in the lives of the populous. The book's first purpose is to introduce readers to the classic jurisprudential schools of thought and connect those philosophies to the lyrics of various songs. There is clear evidence that Natural Law and Legal Positivism have been instrumental in establishing a legal structure and philosophy of law. The remnants of those jurisprudential schools can be directly seen in the lyrics of the last 50 years. The book notes that greater attention should be paid to the music since it is in actuality, non-traditional jurisprudence. After classic jurisprudence is presented, the book undertakes Constitutive Theory and connects lyrics to this critical approach of law.
