Book excerpt: You ain't nothing but a "Hound Dog" ... with these words shouted into the microphone she will always be remembered: Big Mama Thornton. Who is this woman who sang the megahit "Hound Dog" before Elvis Presley and who wrote "Ball & Chain," the song that catapulted Janis Joplin to sudden fame? The story begins with her first musical attempts in the Hot Harlem Revue as a girl of 14. Then the book follows her journey into the Mecca of Texas Blues, Houston, where Big Mama Thornton met Johnny Otis, with whom she recorded her greatest success--"Hound Dog." With the slowdown of the blues in the early sixties this book follows Big Mama Thornton's way to California, discusses her struggle to survive and celebrates her impressive musical comeback in the course of the blues revival and the hippie movement. With the end of the sixties, facing a declining interest in the old school blues, the book shows how Big Mama Thornton found her niche in clubs and festivals in the U.S. and Europe. The book then follows Big Mama Thornton through the seventies and eighties until her untimely death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How good of a musician you become is predicated on how much practice you do and the quality of that practice. In all likelihood, you don’t have access to a harmonica teacher (a rare breed), so it’s up to you to identify what will help you grow as a player and how to best spend your valuable practice time. In Daily Exercises for Diatonic Harmonica, author David Barrett (the world’s most published author of harmonica lesson material) provides recommendations on how to set up your practice room, structure your practice time, what to work on to improve your playing, and how to prepare you for performance. The Daily Exercises portion of this book provides essential exercises for the diatonic harmonica—movement patterns, scales, tongue block technique drills, an exercise to help you memorize the chords of the 12 Bar Blues, your harmonica’s note layout, and how to choose a note to match over a given chord, at any time, in any range of the harmonica. This book and accompanying recording is an essential text for all students of the diatonic harmonica. You'll need a C Major Diatonic Harmonica for this method. Includes access to online audio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memphis, Tennessee, is a major crossroads for blues musicians, songs, and styles. Memphis is where the blues first "came to town" and established itself as a cosmopolitan performance genre, and the city has long been a center of synthesis and evolution in blues recording. This volume tells the story of the blues in Memphis through previously unpublished interviews with nine performers who helped create and sustain the music from the days before its commercial success through the early 1970s. Their attitudes, experiences, and insights impart a deeper understanding of the blues aesthetic and philosophy. The performers' backgrounds range across the blues genres, from classic blues (Lillie Mae Glover) to country blues (Bukka White), from jug band blues (Laura Dukes) to tough, postwar electric blues (Joe Willie Wilkins and Houston Stackhouse). Some, like Furry Lewis and Bukka White, are known around the world. Others, like Laura Dukes, are locally popular, while Boose Taylor is virtually unknown. The range of instruments mastered by the musicians--banjo, fiddle, guitar, fife, bass, ukulele, piano, and harmonica--testifies to the many expressive voices of the blues. Some of the interviewees were singing and performing mostly for white blues/folk revivalist audiences by the 1970s; others, such as Joe Willie Wilkins and Houston Stackhouse, continued to perform mostly for black audiences in Memphis and in the small cafes that dotted the Mississippi Delta. Each interview is illustrated by noted printmaker George D. Davidson and introduced with a biographical sketch by Fred J. Hay. In addition, Hay's extensive notes identify many other blues performers--friends and music partners of the interviewees whose names come up in their many asides and allusions. Together these materials document and pay tribute to the remarkable richness of the Memphis blues scene.

His true fortunate nature, however, is that of being overly cocky, mischievous, and fun loving at heart. He weaves a wildly variable tale through the erratically woven pages of his personal journal. A journal that is chock-full of crazy adventures, and randomly filled with many unusual and off the wall incidents. It is his Uncle Cletus who refers him to the State Mental Institution a.k.a. The Howard Hughes Hotel and who leaves him with these words "It's a crazy world in there, Richard. Even though them folks in that place might know how to play crazy eights, believe me, none of them are playing with a full deck of cards." Richard not only plays his cards right as he confronts the many hardships that come along with institutional life, he will also come to know, respect, and have a genuine concern for the folks who are living there. But as fate would have it Richard himself is dealt a bad hand through the onslaught of his many seizures to come. Richard's biological time clock is slowly ticking away. His story is not meant to be one of ridicule, belittlement, or making fun. Richard's story is meant only to capture and release the humorous side of human nature itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in an affluent Jewish family in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Dick Waterman (b. 1935) was a shy, stuttering boy living a world away from the Mississippi Delta. Though he never heard blues music at home, he became one of the most influential figures in blues of the twentieth century. A close proximity to Greenwich Village in the 1960s fueled Waterman's growing interest in folk music and led to an unlikely trip that resulted in the rediscovery of Delta blues artist Son House in 1964. Waterman began efforts to revive House’s music career and soon became his manager. He subsequently founded Avalon Productions, the first management agency focused on representing black blues musicians. In addition to booking and managing, he worked tirelessly to protect his clients from exploitation, demanded competitive compensation, and fought for royalties due them. During his career, Waterman befriended and worked with numerous musicians, including such luminaries as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, and Eric Clapton. During the early years of his career, he documented the work of scores of musicians through his photography and gained fame as a blues photographer. This authorized biography is the crescendo of years of original research as well as extensive interviews conducted with Waterman and those who knew and worked with him.

Ellen movingly portrays the struggles of growing up in a house divided in which she was deeply affected by her mother's religious dogma and her father's desire to play jazz. Pressured by her mother, Ellen was not only expected to devote her talents to the Church, but she was never to pursue a musician's lifestyle. Yet, being intensely influenced by her father, his music, and a need to perform, Ellen juggled a life rooted in both worlds. In the midst of this journey, Ellen discovered the best and worst that life can offer. Her story is one of triumph, failure, and, ultimately, a new beginning. Somewhere within the pages of this book, you will discover your own truth.

Book excerpt: They say there are no second acts in American lives, and third acts are almost unheard of. That's part of what makes Brian Wilson's story so astonishing. As a cofounding member of the Beach Boys in the 1960s, Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless popular music ever recorded. With intricate harmonies, symphonic structures, and wide-eyed lyrics that explored life's most transcendent joys and deepest sorrows, songs like "In My Room," "God Only Knows," and "Good Vibrations" forever expanded the possibilities of pop songwriting. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and-finally-thriving. Now, for the first time, he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and on his struggles, the exhilarating highs and the debilitating lows. I Am Brian Wilson reveals as never before the man who fought his way back to stability and creative relevance, who became a mesmerizing live artist, who forced himself to reckon with his own complex legacy, and who finally completed Smile, the legendary unfinished Beach Boys record that had become synonymous with both his genius and its destabilization. Today Brian Wilson is older, calmer, and filled with perspective and forgiveness. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his bandmates, or his own inner demons, Wilson's story, told in his own voice and in his own way, unforgettably illuminates the man behind the music, working through the turbulence and discord to achieve, at last, a new harmony.
