Book excerpt: This book explores how polarised interpretations of America’s past influence the present and vice versa. A focus on competing Protestant reactions to President Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan evidences a fundamental divide over how America should remember historical racism, sexism and exploitation. Additionally, these Protestants disagree over how the past influences present injustice and equality. The 2020 killing of George Floyd forced these rival histories into the open. Rowley proposes that recovering a complex view of the past, confessing the bad and embracing the good, might help Americans have a shared memory that can bridge polarisation and work to secure justice and equality. An accessible and timely book, this is essential reading for those concerned with the vexed relationship of religion and politics in the United States, including students and scholars in the fields of Protestantism, history, political science, religious studies and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive inside sources, including exclusive interviews with the President and Vice President, The Faith of Donald J. Trump explores his rarely discussed, but deeply important, religious beliefs and relationships with leading Evangelicals. The Chief Political Correspondent for the Christian Broadcasting Network and the "Jesus in the Public Square" columnist for the Washington Times explore the rarely discussed, but deeply important, religious beliefs and worldview of Donald J. Trump and his advisors. Donald J. Trump was raised as a Presbyterian and has praised both Christianity and the primacy of the Bible. In the Oval Office, he has surrounded himself with close advisors who share his deep faith. In this deeply reported book, David Brody and Scott Lamb draw on unparalleled access to the White House to explain President Trump’s connection to the Christian faith, the evangelical right, the prosperity gospel, and the pressing moral and ethical issues of our day. In part, the authors argue, President Trump won over evangelicals not by pandering to them, but by supporting them and all their most important issues without pretending to be something he’s not. Though the forty-fifth president is far from the perfect vessel—he has been married three times—his supporters argue that Donald Trump may be just what America needs. This book reveals how he has surrounded himself with believers who think he is the one guiding figure who can return us to the traditional values—hard work, discipline, duty, respect, and faith—that have long been the foundation of American life, and truly make America great again in all ways.

Book excerpt: "Believe me" may be the most commonly used phrase in Donald Trump's lexicon. Whether about building a wall or protecting the Christian heritage, the refrain is constant. And to the surprise of many, about 80% percent of white evangelicals have believed Trump-at least enough to help propel him into the White House. Historian John Fea is not surprised-and in Believe Me he explains how we have arrived at this unprecedented moment in American politics. An evangelical Christian himself, Fea argues that the embrace of Donald Trump is the logical outcome of a long-standing evangelical approach to public life defined by the politics of fear, the pursuit of worldly power, and a nostalgic longing for an American past. In the process, Fea challenges his fellow believers to replace fear with hope, the pursuit of power with humility, and nostalgia with history

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an increasingly polarized America fights over the legacy of racism, Susan Neiman, author of the contemporary philosophical classic Evil in Modern Thought, asks what we can learn from the Germans about confronting the evils of the past In the wake of white nationalist attacks, the ongoing debate over reparations, and the controversy surrounding Confederate monuments and the contested memories they evoke, Susan Neiman’s Learning from the Germans delivers an urgently needed perspective on how a country can come to terms with its historical wrongdoings. Neiman is a white woman who came of age in the civil rights–era South and a Jewish woman who has spent much of her adult life in Berlin. Working from this unique perspective, she combines philosophical reflection, personal stories, and interviews with both Americans and Germans who are grappling with the evils of their own national histories. Through discussions with Germans, including Jan Philipp Reemtsma, who created the breakthrough Crimes of the Wehrmacht exhibit, and Friedrich Schorlemmer, the East German dissident preacher, Neiman tells the story of the long and difficult path Germans faced in their effort to atone for the crimes of the Holocaust. In the United States, she interviews James Meredith about his battle for equality in Mississippi and Bryan Stevenson about his monument to the victims of lynching, as well as lesser-known social justice activists in the South, to provide a compelling picture of the work contemporary Americans are doing to confront our violent history. In clear and gripping prose, Neiman urges us to consider the nuanced forms that evil can assume, so that we can recognize and avoid them in the future.

Book excerpt: Obviously, this book finds its title from the slogan created by former president Donald Trump Make America Great Again. This book is intended to argue, that for America to be great, it must be Christian. This does not mean that other religions are not welcome as has never been the case in America, but rather as a country based upon biblical principles, there has always been true freedom of religion. The point being that this country was founded upon the teachings of the Bible which is why there is freedom of religion, each person is free to choose for themselves either heaven or hell. This book is divided into three sections, the first one discussing the fact that America was founded as a Christian nation and as such it grew to be the most powerful and prosperous nation on the earth. Since departing from the Bible, its teachings and its God, America is now in a steep decline. The second section discusses the 5 main institutions of any society and how that in each case, they work better when they follow the teachings and principles of the Bible. The final section is what can still be done to turn America back to its roots and back to the Bible. As Bible believers, we know the time is short and the coming of our Lord to take home His people and to judge the world in His righteousness is indeed imminent. But in these last days, lest us not be lax in the preaching of the gospel and making a stand for the things that are holy. Let us get off of our seats, onto our feet and into the streets, to be as the prophets of old and declare that thus says the Lord.

Trump exposed a deep divide in American politics and culture, one that pollsters and pundits didn't seem to realize was there. But Trump did, and he used it to his advantage in ways that surprised nearly everyone, even those who voted for him. Perhaps the biggest question on many people's minds is how, exactly, did a crass, unrepentant reality TV star and cutthroat business tycoon secure the majority of the religious conservative vote? Now the New York Times bestselling author of The Faith of George W. Bush and The Faith of Barack Obama turns his pen toward the Trump phenomenon. Through meticulous research and personal interviews, Stephen Mansfield uncovers who Trump's spiritual influences have been and explains why Christian conservatives were attracted to this unlikely candidate. The book ends with a reflection on the vital role of prophetic distance, both historically and now.

Book excerpt: This book isn't about Donald Trump but about his followers. When it comes to Trump voters, it's important to note that there are a number of different types of followers. This can be seen in their own words stating, "I would die for him," he's an alpha male that exhibited incredible leadership," "he's the greatest President in U.S. history," etc., .Thus, the big question is why? Why do these Trump followers feel this way about this man? The answer to this question is actually quite easy to understand, it's SIMPLICITY. The reasoning behind this simplicity falls into five categories, which we will explore briefly, and more importantly the various types of individuals that follow Donald Trump.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camel. Served whole and raw with the fur still on its hide has been on the menu of religious conservatives since Donald John Trump became the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican Party. Self-appointed guardians of the national morals, horrified by President Bill Clinton's receiving an illicit blowjob in the Oval Office from a naïve but willing intern, have been cramping their lower lumbar muscles bending backwards to create new and incredible ways to forgive Donald Trump for his numerous, unapologetic dalliances with women who were not his wife at the time. The tortured dance of excusal for each and every revealed and alleged wrongdoing of the chief executive continues to this day.Didn't the Bible have a few verses about this sort of behavior? The Bible? The bedrock of the Christian faith? Does anybody still believe it is the unerring word of God, to be taken absolutely literally without exception?Understanding of the Bible has evolved over the centuries, with modern evangelicals - as well as folks from other religious traditions - having a hard time coming to terms with just how to understand Scripture, apart from the category of it being absolutely true about absolutely everything. No where is this evolution more starkly revealed than in evangelical attitudes toward previous Democratic presidents and the current Republican president. It is clear that the Bible is only as the "eternal" as the morals of the people who claim it as their authority. Cherry picking the Bible, adopting the portions that sustain your political point of view while discarding that which does not, all of that which contradicts your political point of view, is perfectly acceptable. That which is politically useful and expedient is capped, that which is not his overlooked.Assuming everything that's been said and written about President Trump is absolutely true. (There is much left to be sorted out as of this writing, such as whether or not he actually colluded with Russians to win his election in 2016, the extent of his involvement with pornography stars such as Stormy Daniels, and his involvement in alleged dirty deals carried out by his longtime attorney and "fixer", Michael Cohen.) Tradition tells of Seven Deadly Sins. They are (in no particular order):WRATHPRIDEGREEDENVYLUSTSLOTHGLUTTONY Using Donald Trump's own words, the purpose of this manuscript is to review his public utterances, largely on Twitter but even before that medium was available to the public, to see how the president of the United States of America measures up against 07 deadly sense and how the so-called moral arbiters of society have rationalized those away to justify their continued support of this deeply flawed yet historically significant public figure. With that in mind, as part of this essay, the author has included sections of a retooled Bible - the King James version as reimagined for the #MAGA crowd. This essay was not intended to cause anyone shame. One cannot shame those who have no shame. It is not meant to correct right-wing religious leaders on the hypocrisy of their previous biblical utterances. If they do not already realize their hypocrisy, there is no reaching them. This essay is not a call to action nor is it meant to change anyone's mind. If the reader is still of the opinion that Donald Trump was chosen by God to lead America at this point in American history, nothing this author can write will change that assertion. It is merely a telling of the tale. That is all. It is a documentation for posterity about the topsy-turvy morals of America in the second decade of the 21st-century. Do with it what you will.

Book excerpt: This volume examines how historical beliefs about the supernatural were used to justify violence, secure political authority or extend toleration in both the medieval and early modern periods. Contributors explore miracles, political authority and violence in Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, various Protestant groups, Judaism, Islam and the local religious beliefs of Pacific Islanders who interacted with Christians. The chapters are geographically expansive, with contributions ranging from confessional conflict in Poland-Lithuania to the conquest of Oceania. They examine various types of conflict such as confessional struggles, conversion attempts, assassination and war, as well as themes including diplomacy, miraculous iconography, toleration, theology and rhetoric. Together, the chapters explore the appropriation of accounts of miraculous violence that are recorded in sacred texts to reveal what partisans claimed God did in conflict, and how they claimed to know. The volume investigates theories of justified warfare, changing beliefs about the supernatural with the advent of modernity and the perceived relationship between human and divine agency. Miracles, Political Authority and Violence in Medieval and Early Modern History is of interest to scholars and students in several fields including religion and violence, political and military history, and theology and the reception of sacred texts in the medieval and early modern world.

Book excerpt: "Millions of Americans." declared Dallas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffries in 2017, "believe the election of President Trump represented God giving us another chance-perhaps our last chance-to truly make America great again. Our job was to elect him once God showed us the way. We thank Our Lord to this day that we did. Donald Trump got elected because someone whispered in the individual ears of millions of Americans. The voice said that together in this election, we could make a difference, and Donald Trump would be that difference. The people trusted this self-made Billionaire to do what was best for America and not the bidding of slimy politicians or political donors and hacks. Donald Trump was the only candidate for president who offered Americans a breath of fresh air from the stodgy, bossy, establishment elites in both the Democratic and Republican Parties. Trump defied the status quo of rich donors controlling the government for their personal benefit. Donald Trump to many, including myself is a great gift from God himself. Donald J. Trump loves America and American traditional values. Just look at the goodness that he instilled into his own children. He is not a liberal fool or a progressive socialist tool who hates America. He is simply for America and Americans First. So are you and I if we think about it for a while. The corrupt anti-American mainstream press still does not like Trump because he represents normal God-loving and God-fearing Americans and not the fringe sectors of the country. They hate him. He calls them out as the fakes they are. They hate him because he is not controlled by anyone - Dem Party or wimpy swamp-dwelling Republicans. Neither gave Trump an inch and they undermine America by undermining our president. Donald Trump does pay attention to God and Americans are glad that he does. If Mr. Trump happened to be crossing the street and he stepped off a curb and crushed a newly fallen fully formed beautiful blue robin egg, the press would hang him for being anti-bird, anti-animal, and uncaring. Meanwhile when he ran for president, his opponent had gotten four Americans with mothers and fathers back home killed in Benghazi and the press would not even acknowledge the story. Something was wrong, and you know what it was. We needed Donald Trump and Mike Pence to bring America back to reality and truth. That's "Why Trump Got Elected!" That's why God intervened in this great 2016 election. The country's issues included oppressive taxation; legal and illegal immigrants stealing the best jobs; regulations choking businesses; huge debt and deficits shackling our capital resources; a government Obamacare system that added taxes and made health worse; and corporate offshoring, which created a weaker nation. Mrs. Clinton was ready to continue this because she supported Barack H. Obama's policies which had created the whole mess in the first place. Additionally, we have a massive energy dependency on our enemies. We redistribute wealth from producers to non-producers. We permit a huge, growing, inefficient government to operate. It continually lies, taxes too much and spends more than it has. Our government had become enemy # 1 of the people. A good plan, endorsed by Mr. Trump, along with good leaders such as Donald Trump & Mike Pence is now in place and the plan and the leaders are already saving US from Obama perdition. That's "Why God Gave US Trump!"

Why do some religious persons act on their beliefs in charitable, inspiring and deeply humane ways? Is secularism the solution to religious violence, or is it part of the problem? This Element explores the vexed issue of violence done in the name of God, looking at the topic through the lens of peace and conflict studies, religious studies and historical studies. The beliefs of various communities, religious and secular, are explored, looking at how convictions inhibit and enable violence. This Element aims to foster a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the promises and perils of religion so that readers can better respond to a world filled with violence.

Book excerpt: We live in a profoundly spiritual age, but not in any good way. Huge swaths of American culture are driven by manic spiritual anxiety and relentless supernatural worry. Radicals and traditionalists, liberals and conservatives, together with politicians, artists, environmentalists, followers of food fads, and the chattering classes of television commentators: America is filled with people frantically seeking confirmation of their own essential goodness. We are a nation desperate to stand of the side of morality--to know that we are righteous and dwell in the light. In An Anxious Age, Joseph Bottum offers an account of modern America, presented as a morality tale formed by a collision of spiritual disturbances. And the cause, he claims, is the most significant and least noticed historical fact of the last fifty years: the collapse of the mainline Protestant churches that were the source of social consensus and cultural unity. Our dangerous spiritual anxieties, broken loose from the churches that once contained them, now madden everything in American life. Updating The Protestant Ethic and the Sprit of Capitalism, Max Weber's sociological classic, An Anxious Age undertakes two case studies of contemporary social classes adrift in a nation without the religious understandings that gave them meaning. Looking at the college-educated elite he calls "the Poster Children," Bottum sees the post-Protestant heirs of the old mainline Protestant domination of culture: dutiful descendants who claim the high social position of their Christian ancestors even while they reject their ancestors' Christianity. Turning to the Swallows of Capistrano, the Catholics formed by the pontificate of John Paul II, Bottum evaluates the early victories--and later defeats--of the attempt to substitute Catholicism for the dying mainline voice in public life. Sweeping across American intellectual and cultural history, An Anxious Age traces the course of national religion and warns about the strange angels and even stranger demons with which we now wrestle. Insightful and contrarian, wise and unexpected, An Anxious Age ranks among the great modern accounts of American culture.
