Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Home and family," for a woman of the nineteenth century, represented a sphere much broader than the term implies today. A woman's duties as sister and daughter continued, basically unchanged, even after she had assumed the roles of wife and mother. This created a female-centered kin network which went far beyond the fragile nuclear family, and which insured lifelong security in what men and women viewed as an essentially hostile world. The female family is vividly portrayed in True Sisterhood, where Marilyn Ferris Motz examines the lives of white Protestant native-born American women living in Michigan between 1820 and 1920 and the kinship networks to which they belonged—networks that often extended east to New England and the Middle Atlantic states and westward as far as California. The University of Michigan's Bentley Library collections of the correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other documents of numerous family groups have provided the primary resources for this study of thirty extended families. Focusing on personal interaction within the family, Motz shows women playing an active role that is not suggested by observation of residence patterns, household composition, or legal distribution of authority. The book reveals women's use of language to maintain personal relationships, to persuade and manipulate, and to obtain support. Thus the power base of the woman, her informal networks based on personal interaction, persuasion, and sense of obligation, become visible. True Sisterhood shows that women's influence was not merely a fabrication of the literature of what has come to be termed the "cult of domesticity" but was a reality within many nineteenth-century homes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a woman? The current cultural ideal for womanhood encourages women to be strident, sexual, self-centered, independent -- and above all -- powerful and in control. But sadly, this model of womanhood hasn't delivered the happiness and fulfillment it promised. The Bible teaches that it's not up to us to decide what womanhood is all about. God created male and female for a very specific purpose. His design isn't arbitrary or unimportant. It is very intentional and He wants women to discover, embrace, and delight in the beauty of His design. He's looking for True Women! Bible teachers Mary A. Kassian and Nancy Leigh DeMoss share the key fundamentals of biblical womanhood in this eight week study. Each week includes five daily individual lessons leading to a group time of sharing and digging deeper into God's Word. And to enhance this time of learning together, on-line videos are available featuring Mary and Nancy as they encourage women to discover and embrace God's design and mission for their lives. A True Woman Book The goal of the True Woman publishing line is to encourage women to: Discover, embrace, and delight in God's divine design and mission for their lives Reflect the beauty and heart of Jesus Christ to their world Intentionally pass the baton of Truth on to the next generation Pray earnestly for an outpouring of God's Spirit in their families, churches, nation and world

Lena finds solace in her art, teaching in Rhode Island, but still thinks of Kostos and the road she didn't take. Bridget lives with her longtime boyfriend, Eric, in San Francisco, and though a part of her wants to settle down, a bigger part can't seem to shed her old restlessness. When Tibby sends the others plane tickets for a reunion they all breathlessly await, it will change their lives forever, but in ways none of them ever expected. The traveling pants are gone, but the sisterhood lasts forever.

Book excerpt: The work of a coterie of dynamic women - not the brainchild of Reform Judaism's male leaders, as is often thought - Women of Reform Judaism has been a force in the shaping of American Jewish life since its founding as the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods in 1913. The synergy of Reform Judaism's universalist ideas and the women's emancipation movement in the early twentieth century made the synagogue auxiliary a natural platform for women to assume new leadership roles in their synagogues, in Reform Judaism, and in American society. These "sisterhoods" have stood for the solidarity among synagogue women as well as the commitment of these women to important social action issues. Called Women of Reform Judaism since 1993, this oldest federation of women's synagogue auxiliaries has grown from 52 temple sisterhoods to 500 and a membership of over 65,000 women, today a vibrant international women's organization. Women of Reform Judaism, in cooperation with The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Hebrew Union College Press, marks its centennial anniversary with this collection of new scholarly essays which looks back at its history in order to understand how the hopes and dreams of its founders have come to fruition. Armed with the rich archival resources of the American Jewish Archives, including Proceedings of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, 1913-1955, eighteen scholars contributed essays on the spectrum of Women of Reform Judaism's activities, including their funding of Hebrew Union College during the Great Depression, their support for Jewish education through production of a substantial women's Torah commentary designed to edify lay people as well as scholars and clergy, their promotion of Jewish foodways and art through publication of cookbooks and support of synagogue gift shops, their invention of the Uniongram as a formidable fundraising tool on a par with the Girl Scout cookie, and their efforts to safeguard Jewish continuity through support of youth activities (NFTY).

Do you suspect a past life might hold the answer to your resistance to live your dreams? Join the Lead Guitarist as he discovers his past...a past life! For two special people in this story, music lives in every breath they take. One is inspired by his guitar, the other by her Wolf-Totem-Sister. Like each one of us, they have a dream but also the blocks that always come with bringing the dream to life. Can they overcome the resistance from inside themselves and from the Universe? They can if they "let" themselves follow the signs! Spirit is always trying to help us! James Ryder, the lead guitarist, is a shaman in his own right – in the same vibe as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison and other musicians who embodied a connection with Spirit. James has “seeing” dreams and mystical happenings throughout the book, and his fiercely soulful guitar playing embodies a deep communication with another world. But he's stuck, feels trapped, his dreams hold the key if he can solve their mysterious messages. Then we have the maverick record producer, Char Montgomery, who is deeply bonded with her Wolf-Sister and was adopted by a Native American Crow Elder. She truly walks the path of the shaman. It’s integral to her life. I felt it was important for me as a teacher to bring shamanism into real world situations. We want to walk the path of the warrior in our daily life. I hope this book and my first two, "The Woodstock Bridge" and "The Shaman & His Daughter" reflect that mission. Come join me, brothers and sisters, on a great adventure!

We use these terms quite liberally; even too loosely in some instances, which is fine—until we discover that our “ride or die” friend got off the ride a few stops back. There are so many things in life that we have to dissect, but true friendship shouldn’t be one of them. When we cross that fine line between friendship and sisterhood, we should be able cherish that bond and trust that our sister is truly our keeper. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, and all it takes is one wrong turn to derail the beauty of true sisterhood. Not anymore. Today is the day that I challenge all women to stand up, take a look in the mirror, and fight back against that malignant ugliness that wants to see you and your sister at odds. Let today be the day you commit to doing the work to repair your sisterhood. Shut down the drama and reclaim your friend—your sister. You owe it to yourself and to the ladies who have come to be near and dear to your heart. Sisters fuss, they fight, but in the end, they find a way to put the pieces back together and get back to the beauty of loving one another. Oh, you call yourself her sister? Prove it. Crack this book open, roll up your sleeves, and get ready to put some work in because sisterhood is no walk in the park, but it’s so worth the journey! Are you your sister’s keeper? If not, you will be by the time you finish this book!
