Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel around the world and inside the minds of monsters in this true crime anthology featuring sixteen astonishing serial killer exposés. Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the twentieth century—but such assumptions are far from the truth. Serial killers have been around for a long time and can be found in every corner of the globe―and they’re not just limited to the male gender, either. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified. Serial killers can be anywhere. And scarier still, they can be anyone. Edited by acclaimed author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, The Best New True Crime Stories: Serial Killers reveals all-new accounts of true-crime serial killers from the contemporary to the historic. The international list of contributors includes award-winning crime writers, true-crime podcasters, journalists, and experts in the dark crimes field such as Martin Edwards, Lee Mellor, Danuta Kot, Craig Pittman, Richard O. Jones, Marcie Rendon, Mike Browne, and Vicki Hendricks. This book will leave you wondering if it’s ever really possible to know who’s behind the mask you’re allowed to see. Perfect for readers of true crime books such as I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Mindhunter, The Devil in the White City, or Sons of Cain. “An engrossing and multi-faceted anthology for a new era of true crime writing.” ―Piper Weiss, author of You All Grow Up and Leave Me

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey into the heart of dark passions and the crimes they impel. When passion is in the picture, what is criminal, what is sane, what is mad or simply bad? Through court and asylum records, letters and newspaper accounts, this book brings to life some sensational trials between 1870 and 1914, a period when the psychiatric professions were consolidating their hold on our understanding of what is human. Outside fiction, individual emotions and the inner life had rarely been publicly discussed: now, in an increasingly popular press and its courtroom reports, people avidly consumed accounts of transgressive sexuality, savage jealousy and forbidden desires. These stood revealed as aspects not only of those labelled mad, but potentially, of everyone. With great story-telling flair and a wealth of historical detail, Lisa Appignanesi teases out the vagaries of passion and the clashes between the law and the clinic as they stumble towards a (sometimes reviled) collaboration. Sexual etiquette and class roles, attitudes to love, madness and gender, notions of respectability and honor, insanity and lunacy, all are at play in that vital forum in which public opinion is shaped—the theater of the courtroom.

Book excerpt: San Francisco, a city founded in part by criminals, was once one of the most dangerous cities in America. Its Barbary coast was called "a unique criminal district that was the scene of more viciousness and depravity, but it possessed more glamour, than any other area on the American continent." "San Francisco Notorious" brings back the glamorous depravity and noir atmosphere that made it the premier location for murder thrillers like "The Maltese Falcon," "Vertigo," and "Zodiac." This book contains more than 20 compelling tales of serial killers, deadly women, con-men, masters of escape, and unsolved mysteries. San Franciscan criminals were as colorful as the city they inhabited. Take William Thoreson, a murderous millionaire who hid the nation's largest private armory in his Pacific Heights mansion. Then there's Isabella Martin, the murderous "Queen of Grudges" who tried to poison an entire town, or Ethan McNabb and Lloyd Sampsell, the "Yacht Bandits," who used a luxurious sloop as a getaway vehicle for their dozens of bank robberies. Most of these unusual cases are largely unknown and have never appeared in book form. Included are cases that are still mysteries today, including the mysterious tale of the Zodiac Killer, complete with a new analysis and a startling new theory on the murder.

Book excerpt: True Crime of Love and Passion is the first book of three novels that tells the story of three different ordinary women who finds themselves after experiencing the harshness of a man’s world. Their stories will shine the light on their tormented hearts, with them experiencing abuse and rape—finding themselves through it all. Each choice they make leads them closer to the love they so crave and the life they wish for. True Crime of Love and Passion is the firsthand account of a young woman who grew up sheltered by her loving parents. They put her though medical school and taught her how to take care of herself in the real world. After graduating, she finds a little house and job just outside of the city. There she finds herself alone for the first time in her life. After meeting a strange man in her home one evening and waking up to her father’s voice, she thinks she is going mad. She is embarrassed and afraid to know the truth behind her mystery man, who is somehow able to take control of her and enter her home without a trace. She learns that the crime of love and passion comes at a cost when her life is turned upside down as she is forced to follow a dark path of death and pain. She wonders who she can trust, and if the man she finds she can’t live without, who shows her a love like she has never known before, can handle her betrayal when she finds out she is with a child but doesn’t know who the father is—the ghost of a man or her first real love.

Book excerpt: The “fascinating” true story behind the HBO Max and Hulu series about Texas housewife Candy Montgomery and the bizarre murder that shocked a community (Los Angeles Times Book Review). Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore had a lot in common: They sang together in the Methodist church choir, their daughters were best friends, and their husbands had good jobs working for technology companies in the north Dallas suburbs known as Silicon Prairie. But beneath the placid surface of their seemingly perfect lives, both women simmered with unspoken frustrations and unanswered desires. On a hot summer day in 1980, the secret passions and jealousies that linked Candy and Betty exploded into murderous rage. What happened next is usually the stuff of fiction. But the bizarre and terrible act of violence that occurred in Betty’s utility room that morning was all too real. Based on exclusive interviews with the Gore and Montgomery families, Edgar Award finalist Evidence of Love is the “superbly written” account of a gruesome tragedy and the trial that made national headlines when the defendant entered the most unexpected of pleas: not guilty by reason of self-defense (Fort Worth Star-Telegram). Adapted into the Emmy and Golden Globe Award–winning television movie A Killing in a Small Town—as well as the new limited series Candy on Hulu and Love and Death on HBO Max—this chilling tale of sin and savagery will “fascinate true crime aficionados” (Kirkus Reviews).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will explore five gripping tales involving a crime of passion and delve into the depths of raw, human emotion. Anthony Williams, a seventy-year-old man who strangled his wife to death inside their home in Cwmbran, South Wales on March 28, 2020. Anthony claimed that he was struggling with anxiety and depression due to coronavirus restrictions, and one morning, after a particularly brutal argument, Anthony ended Ruth's life by admitting he, "choked the living daylights out of her." Although he claimed responsibility for the murder, Anthony would plead guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and receive a five-year prison sentence. William "Bud" Wilson, a young husband and father in Anderson County, South Carolina, brutally murdered his wife, Laura, on May 10, 1892. William had suspected Laura of an adulterous affair and grew extremely jealous of her in the weeks leading up to her murder. Laura had planned to leave William and take the three children, Effie, Minnie and Prue, to her father's house, the Reverend Thomas Garrett. On the morning of their departure, William used a razor to slash Laura's throat, nearly decapitating her, before turning the razor on himself. Unsuccessful in his attempt to commit suicide, William was arrested and hanged on the gallows after a failed insanity defense on October 8, 1892. Betty Broderick, a divorced, forty-one-year-old woman, broke into her ex-husband's home with a key that had been given to her by the couple's child. At 5:30 AM on November 15, 1989, Betty shot and killed Dan Broderick and his young wife, Linda, as they lay in bed. The case gained widespread media attention due to the dramatic events leading up to the murders including an adulterous affair, a custody battle, and the tale of a scorned woman that had spiraled into a web of jealousy, betrayal, and rage. Carey Birmingham, a sixty-year-old man in Spring, Texas, discovered that his wife, forty-eight-year-old Patricia, had allegedly had an affair. On December 6, 2021, the couple got into a heated argument in their driveway. Patricia feared for her life after Carey pulled out his shotgun, so she decided to record him. Shockingly, Carey shot Patricia three times on camera after telling her, "Alright, goodbye. You're going to meet Jesus; I hope it was worth it." Ultimately, Carey was sentenced to ten-years in prison after his defense attorney convinced an all-women jury that Carey's crime was driven by his extreme emotional pain after learning of his wife's affair. Rachel Wade, a nineteen-year-old young woman, discovered that her boyfriend, Joshua Camacho, had started seeing another woman behind her back, eighteen-year-old Sarah Ludermann. On April 14, 2009, Sarah and Joshua had spent the evening at his apartment playing video games and watching movies. When Rachel found out, she was livid and put a steak knife in her purse. The two young women had exchanged threats over social media for a few months and in the early morning hours of April 15th, a fight between the two escalated when Rachel stabbed Sarah in the heart. The case was highly publicized due to the young age of the individuals involved and the backdrop of a teenage love triangle gone wrong.
