Book excerpt: One of the most mysterious of authors, B. Traven spent his early life in Germany as an actor and anarchist publisher using the name of Ret Marut, then emerged in Mexico as B. Traven, a literary champion of the proletariat. This work examines his career through the production of his 16 books (twelve novels, two novellas, a work of nonfiction, and a collection of short stories), to the production of the movie The Treasures of the Sierra Madre, where he emerged this time as Hal Croves. The bibliography, with 140 illustrations and 1200 entries, provides information on the publication of over a thousand editions of Traven's books. For the first time, information on the states and issues of many editions, including first editions published in Germany between 1926 and 1960, is provided. Includes an illustrated descriptive bibliography of all of the American and British first editions. An essential tool for collectors, book dealers, and librarians.

Book excerpt: "Readers who love medieval-esque fantasy will delight in this rousing tale of rebellion.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) After a warlord slaughters her patients, Sister Alessia quits the cloister and strikes out on her own to heal the victims of a brutal dynastic conflict. Her roaming forest camp unwittingly becomes the center of a vengeful peasant insurgency, raiding the forces of both sides to survive. Alessia struggles to temper their fury as well as tend wounds, consenting to ever greater violence to keep her new charges safe. When they uncover proof of a foreign conspiracy prolonging the bloodshed, Alessia risks the very lives she’s saved to expose the truth and bring the war to an end. Book excerpt: "Trozas, here translated into English for the first time, completes the set of B. Traven's legendary Jungle Novels. Describing the conditions of peonage and debt slavery suffered by Mexican Indians during the reign of Porfirio Diaz, they form an epic of the birth of the Mexican Revolution." "The main character of Trozas is a young Indian named Andres Ugaldo, a virtual slave worker in a monteria - mahogany plantation - which is purchased by the profit-hungry Montellano brothers, widely despised for their brutal treatment of workers. The demands on Andres and his companions exceed even the usual insufferable conditions in the monteria. Trozas (the word means "logs") captures the origins of the rebellious spirit that slowly spread through the labor camps and haciendas of Mexico, culminating in the bloody revolt that ended Diaz's rule." "In the hands of a masterful storyteller like B. Traven, the portrait of Andres and his political awakening makes arresting reading. Traven evokes the backbreaking daily routine of the monteria, brings alive the players in this sordid drama, and confirms his stature as one of the narrative masters of the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before massive deforestation began in the 1960s, the Lacandón jungle, which lies on the border of Mexico and Guatemala, was part of the largest tropical rain forest north of the Amazon. The destruction of the Lacandón occurred with little attention from the international press—until January 1, 1994, when a group of armed Maya rebels led by a charismatic spokesperson who called himself Subcomandante Marcos emerged from jungle communities and briefly occupied several towns in the Mexican state of Chiapas. These rebels, known as the Zapatista National Liberation Army, became front-page news around the globe, and they used their notoriety to issue rhetorically powerful communiqués that denounced political corruption, the Mexican government’s treatment of indigenous peoples, and the negative impact of globalization. As Brian Gollnick reveals, the Zapatista communiqués had deeper roots in the Mayan rain forest than Westerners realized—and he points out that the very idea of the jungle is also deeply rooted, though in different ways, in the Western imagination. Gollnick draws on theoretical innovations offered by subaltern studies to discover “oral traces” left by indigenous inhabitants in dominant cultural productions. He explores both how the jungle region and its inhabitants have been represented in literary writings from the time of the Spanish conquest to the present and how the indigenous people have represented themselves in such works, including post-colonial and anti-colonial narratives, poetry, video, and photography. His goal is to show how popular and elite cultures have interacted in creating depictions of life in the rain forest and to offer new critical vocabularies for analyzing forms of cross-cultural expression.
