Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a dreamland where roasted pigs wander about with knives in their backs to make carving easy, where grilled geese fly directly into one's mouth, where cooked fish jump out of the water and land at one's feet. The weather is always mild, the wine flows freely, sex is readily available, and all people enjoy eternal youth. Such is Cockaigne. Portrayed in legend, oral history, and art, this imaginary land became the most pervasive collective dream of medieval times-an earthly paradise that served to counter the suffering and frustration of daily existence and to allay anxieties about an increasingly elusive heavenly paradise. Illustrated with extraordinary artwork from the Middle Ages, Herman Pleij's Dreaming of Cockaigne is a spirited account of this lost paradise and the world that brought it to life. Pleij takes three important texts as his starting points for an inspired of the panorama of ideas, dreams, popular religion, and literary and artistic creation present in the late Middle Ages. What emerges is a well-defined picture of the era, furnished with a wealth of detail from all of Europe, as well as Asia and America. Pleij draws upon his thorough knowledge of medieval European literature, art, history, and folklore to describe the fantasies that fed the tales of Cockaigne and their connections to the central obsessions of medieval life.

Book excerpt: Happy Stories, Funny Stories, Sad Stories - But Always True Stories About Living with Rescue Dogs. “Tears & Laughter” “Heartwarming & Captivating.” Katie Woods grew up with animals; as a little girl, her best friend and guardian was a dog. Growing up, nothing changed and over more than twenty years, she adopted or rescued a pot pourri of dogs, from a three-legged terrier to a ten stone Rottweiler. This is the story of her journey through life with some of the mutts and mongrels who shared it; from the alluring to the alarming, the tranquil to the timid, the serene to the certifiable. Meet Katie’s dogs from over the years; Fudge, the geriatric labrador, Samson, the ten stone Rottweiler found abandoned and dangerous; but most of all, meet “The Gang of Four”, Seamus, Shannon, Minnie, and Duncan the Canine Tripod”. All Shelter Dogs, but all unique and all with very different backgrounds and personalities: Seamus, abandoned, Shannon, abused by a paedophile, Minnie, condemned for aggression, and Duncan, the puppy amputee. They bonded with each other and with Katie in a unique relationship that was “The Gang of Four.” Read their story for an unforgettable experience. Reviews: Five Stars "Tears & laughter - A 'Must Read' book" Laurie Lawrence “Brilliant! Most enjoyable heartwarming read by an author who is totally chilled and at home with her dogs and nature ........ Katie's personality shines through, which has helped me to try to "chill a little more" over my two dogs, rescued from the vile puppy farm trade. You will shed a tear or two, but you will also smile and chuckle your way through these pages. Read this on e-book, but now ordered in paperback ... no more 'battery running low' just as I'm wanting to turn the page for more!” Five Stars "A Heartwarming Read" Sandra S “Just finished this wonderful book, The Long, The Short and The Tall. A really good read for anyone especially animal lovers, it has everything, comical in parts, gut wrenching in others & so sad you could cry. Katie’s writing is awe inspiring, I felt as though I was actually there with her on her walks with her Gang of Four! I loved it & can't wait for when her life with her fur babies continues....”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this capstone book, fairy tale expert Jack Zipes has assembled what he describes as his last theoretical and critical study of fairy tales. His purpose is to create a coherent collection that pays tribute to a group of writers that he views as "survivors with a mission" whose tales inspire readers to this day. The book begins with a substantial introduction in which Zipes discusses the history of his interest in fairy tales and the motivation for his scholarship in the field. In a world filled with conflict, he writes, "fairy tales can be used for enlightenment by all of us or abused by small groups of powerful people who seek domination." The main text includes thirteen essays on notable authors of fairy tales-Édouard Laboulaye, Kurt Schwitters, Béla Bálazs, Christian Bärmann, Charles Godfrey Leland, Mariette Lydis, Ernst Bloch, Paul Vaillant-Couturier, Hermynia zur Mühlen, Lisa Teztner, Felix Salten, Emery Kelen, and Gianni Rodari-many of whom lived through revolutions and world wars or were otherwise compelled to confront political oppression during their lives. Zipes considers their cultural significance and their contributions to fairy tale literature, arguing that each deserves greater attention and appreciation. Some of the chapters have been adapted from previously published introductions Zipes wrote for the Oddly Modern Fairy Tales series, which he edits, and others are adapted from scholarly volumes that Zipes has published over his long career as a self-identified "scholarly scavenger" of largely forgotten tales. Together, they create a portrait of the political stakes that have animated Zipes's lifelong fascination with the fairy tale, and explain why readers and writers alike continue to return to this narrative form"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kurt Schwitters revolutionized the art world in the 1920s with his Dadaist Merz collages, theater performances, and poetry. But at the same time he was also writing extraordinary fairy tales that were turning the genre upside down and inside out. Lucky Hans and Other Merz Fairy Tales is the first collection of these subversive, little-known stories in any language and the first time all but a few of them have appeared in English. Translated and introduced by Jack Zipes, one of the world's leading authorities on fairy tales, this book gathers thirty-two stories written between 1925 and Schwitters's death in 1948--including a complete English-language recreation of The Scarecrow, a children's book illustrated with avant-garde typography that Schwitters created with Kate Steinitz and De Stijl founder Theo van Doesburg. Lucky Hans and Other Merz Fairy Tales also includes brilliant new illustrations that evoke the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Schwitters wrote these darkly humorous, satirical, and surreal tales at a time when traditional German fairy tales were being co-opted by the Nazis. Filled with sharp critiques of German life during the Weimar and early Nazi eras, Schwitters's tales are rich with absurdist events and insist that not everyone--and perhaps not anyone--lives happily ever after. In "Lucky Hans," the starving protagonist tries to catch a rabbit only to have it shed its fur like a coat and run off naked into the forest. In other tales, a sarcastic gypsy stands in for a fairy godmother and an army recruit is arrested for growing to monstrous size. Lucky Hans and Other Merz Fairy Tales is a delightfully strange and surprising book.

Book excerpt: Re-experience historical fact as it is woven into the fictional fabric of the Hawkins family with Xander Hawkins, an extremely wealthy man from Tennessee, who engages a New York lawyer to create a Trust Fund to provide for the continuation of his dream: the encouragement, education, and care of orphans. A. Alan Isaacs invites readers to sit in Xander’s study alongside the lawyer as he listens to stories about how the Hawkins family discovered a love for orphans and an unimaginable treasure! Over several days, the lawyer learns how more than 200 years of ‘Journaling’ from Xander’s ancestors continues to influence his approach to life. Along the way, readers can snap pictures of QR Codes embedded throughout Rooster’s Gold to effortlessly connect the written word to an internet-based resource. Readers can also fact-check Xander’s stories as his relatives encounter several of history’s heroes, such as Davy Crockett, Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, and many more! After returning from the Spanish-American war, Rooster’s son learns that orphaned and abandoned children are being put on trains in New York City and ‘whistle-stopped’ across the United States to live and work on farms to produce crops for the country’s exploding population. Witness how the stories of these Orphan Train Children profoundly impact the Hawkins’ family—and the New York lawyer.

The contradiction between French and English, between the silent and the censoring world of the convent, the make-believe world of books and folk tales, various locales of northern Ontario, Toronto, and Paris, all collapse into each other in this hybrid novel of stories that reflect the social and cultural dynamics of a woman's heritage. Through textual layering, Tostevin achieves a sense of diversity of purpose and branching growth from a multiplicity of places, voices and traditions, creating a rich tapestry, the colours of which are very much Tostevin's own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of Muslims have never been more common in the Western imagination than they are today. Building on Orientalist stereotypes constructed over centuries, the figure of the wily Arab has given rise, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, to the "Islamist" terrorist. In Idols in the East, Suzanne Conklin Akbari explores the premodern background of some of the Orientalist types still pervasive in present-day depictions of Muslims-the irascible and irrational Arab, the religiously deviant Islamist-and about how these stereotypes developed over time. Idols in the East contributes to the recent surge of interest in European encounters with Islam and the Orient in the premodern world. Focusing on the medieval period, Akbari examines a broad range of texts including encyclopedias, maps, medical and astronomical treatises, chansons de geste, romances, and allegories to paint an unusually diverse portrait of medieval culture. Among the texts she considers are The Book of John Mandeville, The Song of Roland, Parzival, and Dante's Divine Comedy. From them she reveals how medieval writers and readers understood and explained the differences they saw between themselves and the Muslim other. Looking forward, Akbari also comes to terms with how these medieval conceptions fit with modern discussions of Orientalism, thus providing an important theoretical link to postcolonial and postimperial scholarship on later periods. Far reaching in its implications and balanced in its judgments, Idols in the East will be of great interest to not only scholars and students of the Middle Ages but also anyone interested in the roots of Orientalism and its tangled relationship to modern racism and anti-Semitism.

Book excerpt: “Trapped in their cozy catacombs, the couples have made sex by turns their toy, their glue, their trauma, their therapy, their hope, their frustration, their revenge, their narcotic, their main line of communication and their sole and pitiable shield against the awareness of death.”—Time One of the signature novels of the American 1960s, Couples is a book that, when it debuted, scandalized the public with prose pictures of the way people live, and that today provides an engrossing epitaph to the short, happy life of the “post-Pill paradise.” It chronicles the interactions of ten young married couples in a seaside New England community who make a cult of sex and of themselves. The group of acquaintances form a magical circle, complete with ritualistic games, religious substitutions, a priest (Freddy Thorne), and a scapegoat (Piet Hanema). As with most American utopias, this one’s existence is brief and unsustainable, but the “imaginative quest” that inspires its creation is eternal. Praise for Couples “Couples [is] John Updike’s tour de force of extramarital wanderlust.”—The New York Times Book Review “Ingenious . . . If this is a dirty book, I don’t see how sex can be written about at all.”—Wilfrid Sheed, The New York Times Book Review
