Considering gems, recent statistics have shown that about 15 billion Euros are annually at stake. Nowadays, gemmology, i.e., the study of gem materials, is one of the most expanding fields in the earth sciences, positioned between academia and industry. As an applied science, in gemmology, the instruments used should be non- or microdestructive, and their cost should be reasonable both in terms of equipment and time consumption. Gemmology can also be used contribute to the development of pure science and in some cases, destructive techniques may have to be used. Taking into account the fact that gems are albeit rarely available for scientific research, this compilation of 20 articles by around 100 researchers from over 30 different institutions situated in 20 countries from around the globe, presented in the Special Issue entitled “Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Gems”, offers very good examples on the application of various methods for their study which will hopefully contribute to our better understanding of gem formation in general and will enhance scientific debates attracting more scientists from various disciplines to get involved in this field.

Together, Clarence and Donna Salmon have created a wonderful reading experience which follows one man's journey from cradle to old age using love, faith, determination, strength of character, perseverance and a great sense of humor. A true piece of Americana.

Though there have been many gemstone books published in that time, most have been concerned, understandably and rightly, with the science of gem testing and have covered that area very well. Details of the geological occurrence of many of the classic gemstones, and of nearly all those which have only recently been discovered, have been less adequately dealt with. Coverage has been restricted to a number of papers in a wide variety of geological and mineralogical journals. Gemstones hopes to get the balance right. In the preparation of the book all the journals and monographs in the field have been consulted so that the book should stand for some years as the authority to which gemmologists and others turn in the first instance. Ease of reference and depth of coverage make Gemstones both a reference book and a bench book. This report reflects as faithfully as possible the analysis and observations of the conference participants, and draws overall lessons and recommendations from that exercise, in the hope that these will be of use in future undertakings of the United Nations. Many reforms have already been initiated at the United Nations Secretariat in the wake of UNTAC. The Department of Peace-Keeping Operations (DKPO) has been strengthened and the Field Operations Division (FOD) integrated into it; the number of staff dealing with political analysis and training has increased; and the involvement of Member States, through secondment and the provisions of national expertise, has become institutionalized.
