Book excerpt: A creative job of selection and editing, this is an anthology of records of ""man's unconquerable spirit"". Mr. Adams, known for years as the editor of the N.Y. Times Book Review, has brought together deathless reminders of the ways in which man can rise to sublime heights. Here are stories of ordeals, external and internal, taken from factual records. He goes back to the Bible, to the classic historians, to those like Francis Parkman, who have recorded history, to figures who still stand for incredible achievements like La Salle, Daniel Boone, Robert Scott, John Colter, Lindbergh. At times the pieces he has chosen compass ordeals both physical and spiritual -- as in Dunkirk and Bataan, in Powell's descent of the Colorado, Herzog's ascent of Annapurna, the broaching of new frontiers by the spelologists. Sometimes the victory seems wholly in a spiritual realm as with Job, St. Augustine, Joan of Arc, and more recently Anne Frank, Betsey Barton and young Gunther. There are some little known writers whose contributions are unforgettable- as in the extract from Haniel Long's The Power Within Us. Mr. Adams has contributed -- in addition to his editorial perspicacity- an Introduction and brief notes accompanying each selection. This is a book for the many who like tales of achievement. -- From Kirkus Reviews.

Book excerpt: Agincourt is one of the most evocative names in English military history. Henry V's forces were tired, hungry, and faced a French army three to six times more numerous. However, they possessed several advantages, and English success resulted from the combination of heavily armoured men-at-arms with troops armed with the infamous longbow-- the havoc this weapon wreaked was crucial. Using original fifteenth century evidence, including the surviving French battle plan and the accounts of men present in both armies, this title discusses the lead-up to the battle, the tactical dispositions of the two forces and the reasons for the ultimate English success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DIVINE INTERVENTION OF GOD IN HUMAN TRIUMPH! Many of us may not be aware of how divine interventions work to change adverse circumstances surrounding our lives. It seems to me that God who created us in His own image also continues to shape the events in our lives. The author of this book is Rev. James Abolarin, who, by the grace of Christ, has overcome many odds in this world. Each year of his life tells a different story of how God has helped him to overcome adversities. The Lord has made him an asset in the body of Christ as he wants to teach you how to fight and succeed as you go through the journey of life. He has found out that it is never the will of God that believers live their lives defeated, but instead, they should be more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. Every new year possesses enormous challenges to many of us in this world. These challenges are very real and unavoidable. If anyone thinks that eluding these challenges will make life easier, such an individual is living in a fantasy land. Jesus came to this world. He was confronted with challenges, being the Lord and the Creator of the universe. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. ā€”Colossians 1:15ā€“20 The incarnation of Jesus as God in human flesh was to send the message of Godā€™s divine intervention in the affairs of men in order to set things straight in our lives. This has been part of Godā€™s plan for the world when He spoke to Abraham many times. Emmanuel, in the book of Matthew 1, means God is with us. It demonstrated a new era of Godā€™s willingness to save the oppressed. Over several years in my ministry, I have come face-to-face with many challenges that have dented my life both positively and, unfortunately, negatively as well. However, enlisting Christ in my battles in life has made all things work the best for me without regret. I live with full assurance of a better tomorrow and not in despair because of the confidence I have in Christ as a Christian. According to the book of Romans 8:28, all things work together for good. Just read the verse below. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Those who are not spiritually enlightened are often argued against Godā€™s divine interventions because their spiritual eyes are darkened. I have learned many lessons through life challenges and have grown tremendously in experiences because of these challenges. During my ups and downs in life, I have seen a lot of miracles. I am a prayerful man, and I am always hungry for the truth. For example, my wife and I just returned from ā€œA Deeper Life Convention of 2012.ā€ We were richly blessed from all the messages we heard, especially those that were pungently delivered by our father in the Lord, Rev. W. F. Kumuyi. In fact, we came back to the USA fired up to do more exploit for Christ this year. We have unwavering conviction that this year will be the beginning of a new thing in our ministry. Upon returning to the United States, the first Sunday worship was very good. People were happy that we came back safely, and they clapped their hands for Jesus Christ. I always consider it an honor when people appreciate their ministers in such a way. The challenge is how to deepen their love for Christ this year so they can do t

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long 1950s, which extend back to the early postwar period and forward into the early 1960s, were a period of ā€œcontainment cultureā€ in America, as the media worked to reinforce traditional family values and suspected communist sympathizers were blacklisted from the entertainment industry. Yet some brave filmmakers and actors still challenged the status quo to produce indelible and imaginative work that delivered uncomfortable truths to Cold War audiences. Triumph Over Containment offers an uncompromising look at some of the eraā€™s greatest films and directors, from household names like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick to lesser-known iconoclasts like Samuel Fuller and Ida Lupino. Taking in everything from The Thing from Another World (1951) to Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), acclaimed film scholar Robert P. Kolker scours a variety of different genres to find pockets of resistance to the repressive and oppressive norms of Cold War culture. He devotes special attention to two quintessential 1950s genresā€”the melodrama and the science fiction filmā€”that might seem like polar opposites, but each offered pointed responses to containment culture. This book takes a fresh look at such directors as Nicholas Ray, John Ford, and Orson Welles, while giving readers a new appreciation for the depth and artistry of 1950s Hollywood films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The media industries in the United States and Japan are similar in much the same way animals on earth share a similar DNA, but while a horse and a kangaroo maybe 95% related on a biological level, they are also very different - this is the way it is with manga/anime in Japan and Hollywood animation/movies/TV. Although sharing some key common origins, they developed mostly separately but influenced each other significantly along the way. That confluence is now accelerating into new forms of hybridization that will drive much of future storytelling entertainment. Understanding these common and divergent "DNA" origins, the cross-influences and the independent traits is one of many reasons why this book is so important. Through original interviews with top creators in these fields and illuminating case studies including adaptations of Japanese mangas and animes for Hollywood remakes, Manga and Anime go to Hollywood analyzes the specific dynamics of this confluence between Japanese manga/anime and American film, animation and television. In addition, it shows how to use this knowledge creatively to shape the future of global narrative storytelling, including through the educational system. It is a fascinating to any reader with an interest in the inter-related history of Japanese manga/anime and Hollywood since the Meiji period through WW2, what is happening on the cutting edge right now - and into the future.
