Book Synopsis Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 1 by : Mark A. Lamport
Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions, Volume 1 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the, central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is an introductory textbook in three volumes describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Each chapter contains five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The missions of Hymns and Hymnody are to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and to provide a theological analysis of what the cited composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. It is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect is missing in accessible formats for the current literature.

When they drew near to Jerusalem, coming to the village of Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus Christ sent two of His disciples saying to them, «Go into the village opposite you; and immediately, you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it to me. If any one says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs it’.» The disciples went away and found it as He had told them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put their garments on the colt, and Jesus sat on it. In the meantime in Jerusalem, they learned that Jesus, the One Who raised Lazarus from the dead after four days, was coming to Jerusalem. Crowds of people, gathered from everywhere for the feast of the Passover, went to meet Him. Many took off their outer garments and spread them on the road before Him. Others cut palm branches, carried them in their hands and spread them on the road. And all the people, who went before and who followed, cried out with joy, «Hosanna (Salvation) to the Son of David! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord;» – that is, worthy of praise is the One Who comes in the name of the Lord, sent from God. «King of Israel! Hosanna in the highest!"

Download or read book Prayer and Worship in Eastern Christianities, 5th to 11th Centuries written by Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayer and Worship in Eastern Christianities, 5th to 11th Centuries forges a new conversation about the diversity of Christianities in the medieval eastern Mediterranean, centered on the history of practice, looking at liturgy, performance, prayer, poetry, and the material culture of worship. It studies prayer and worship in the variety of Christian communities that thrived from late antiquity to the middle ages: Byzantine Orthodoxy, Syrian Orthodoxy, and the Church of the East. Rather than focusing on doctrinal differences and analyzing divergent patterns of thought, the essays address common patterns of worship, individual and collective prayer, hymnography and liturgy, as well as the indigenous theories that undergirded Christian practices. The volume intervenes in standard academic discourses about Christian difference with an exploration of common patterns of celebration, commemoration, and self-discipline. Essays by both established and promising, younger scholars interrogate elements of continuity and change over time – before and after the rise of Islam, both under the control of the Eastern Roman Empire and in the lands of successive caliphates. Groups distinct in their allegiances nevertheless shared a common religious heritage and recognized each other – even in their differences – as kinds of Christianity. A series of chapters explore the theory and practice of prayer from Greco-Roman late antiquity to the Syriac middle ages, highlighting the transmission of monastic discourses about prayer, especially among Syrian and Palestinian ascetic teachers. Another set of essays examines localization of prayer within churches through inscriptions, donations, dedications, and incubation. Other chapters treat the composition and transmission of hymns to adorn the liturgy and articulate the emotions of the Christian calendar, structuring liturgical and eschatological time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two main, interrelated thematic units: the reception of Aeschylus' Dionysiac plays in Bacchae and the refiguration of the latter in the Byzantine drama Christus Patiens. In both sections the common denominator is Euripides' Bacchae, which is approached as a receiving text in the first unit and as a source text in the second. Each section addresses dramatic, ideological and cultural facets of the reception process, yielding insight into pivotal Dionysiac motifs that the ancient and Byzantine treatments share. Different pieces of evidence, mythographic, stylistic, and iconographic, are interrogated, so that light is shed on aspects of the storyline, the concepts, and the imagery of Aeschylus' two tetralogies. At the same time, Bacchae provides a valuable exemplum for aspects of dramatic technique, plot-patterns, and concepts refigured in Christus Patiens. This exploration thoroughly and systematically focuses on the ways in which the pagan play was transformed to bring forward new pillars of thought and innovative values in different cultural and ideological contexts over a wide time span from Greek Antiquity to Byzantium.
