Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Catholicism Revisited' is an attempt to render Roman Catholicism more credible. The book rests on the author's conviction that a fuller and more correct understanding of Catholicism as a religion can emerge only from a radical reappraisal of the salvific role of Jesus' humanity, and of his human faith, hope and love, in line with the basic and central doctrines of the Incarnation and the Trinity. Being a Catholic means sharing in an ordinary but truly mystical way in the spirit of Jesus' human faith, hope and love, and to the maintenance of this insight and the faith-vision of reality it entails all else must yield precedence - the conventional notion of God, the necessary system of Catholic beliefs which support the faith-vision, and the Church itself. In the course of the book many fundamental issues are raised and discussed, not least the metaphorical nature of theology, the connection between faith and beliefs, the meaning and use of Catholic doctrines, the actual experience of being human. It is in the light of these issues that the author sees an urgent need to re-imagine the God of Catholicism. A born Catholic, Robert Butterworth was educated by the Jesuits and spent forty years in the Society of Jesus. He read classics at Oxford and completed his doctorate in early Christian theology at the Gregorian University in Rome. During more than twenty years as Head of Department he taught theology at Heythrop College in the University of London and at Roehampton University. On retirement from academia and from the Society he married and now lives near London. He has published autobiographical reflections on his experiences in 'The Detour' (Gracewing, 2005).

Now C. Baxter Kruger's THE SHACK REVISITED guides readers into a deeper understanding of these three persons to help readers have a more profound connection with the core message of The Shack--that God is love. An early fan of The Shack and a close friend to its author, Kruger shows why the novel has been enthusiastically embraced by so many Christians worldwide. In the words of William P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Trinity. Those three words stir a myriad of emotions. It's an incredible attribute of God, and one that can be, quite frankly, confusing. But the Reverend Gerald Skillicorn once more takes a daunting concept and makes it accessible and even applicable to our daily lives. The Holy Trinity is a picture of God drawn by the hands of early theologians. No doubt the driving force was to share their experience of the revelation of God, using their language and philosophy. They wanted God to be known in a personal way, worshipped reverently and followed faithfully. They wanted all people to know the joy-filled rewards of God's love: "the Father, who created the universe, the Son, who became incarnate and died to set humans free from the power of sin, and the Spirit, who brought the divine love itself into human hearts and minds." These three components are ONE; each of them a unique way in which God is God and acts in creation. Get to know God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, the Three in One, in a whole new way in Revisiting the Trinity.

Religious Celebrations is an alphabetically organized encyclopedia that covers more than 800 celebratory occasions from all of the world's major religious communities as well as many of the minor faith traditions. The encyclopedia provides a complete reference tool for examining the myriad ways people worldwide celebrate their religious lives across religious boundaries, providing information on numerous celebratory activities never before covered in a reference work. Offering the most comprehensive coverage of religious holidays ever assembled, this two-volume book covers festivals, commemorations, holidays, and annual religious gatherings all over the world, with special attention paid to the celebrations in larger countries. Entries written by distinguished researchers and specialists on different religious communities capture the unique intensity of each event, be it fasting or feasting, frenzied activity or the universal cessation of work, a huge gathering of the faithful en masse or a small family-centered event. The work spotlights celebrations that currently exist without overlooking now-abandoned celebrations that still impact the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a view of Christianity and Christian thinking that draws on some key thinkers from Plato to Wittgenstein and represents a thoughtful 'common sense' theology offered as an alternative to the anti-intellectualism of many contemporary Christians and to the distortions of Christianity provided by some of the most vocal critics. Seeking to make accessible some traditional Christian thinking and practices that are rooted in the desire to make the most of life, Felderhof highlights the additional Platonic corollary that unless we have learned to live well, we shall not properly understand, thus presuming the mutual interdependence of theory and practice. Felderhof portrays how Christian theology is to do with making sense of what Christians do and how generally we are best advised to live. This is an invaluable introduction to key themes for students and a wide range of readers.

Book excerpt: While many of us struggle to understand it, the Trinity is one of the most important teachings of the Christian faith. It defines God's very essence and describes how he relates to us. And while it can be a difficult concept to get our heads around, it is crucial for believers to understand how God explains his triune nature in his Word. In this book, James R. White offers a concise, understandable explanation of what the Trinity is and why it matters. While refuting the distortions of God presented by various cults, Dr. White shows how understanding this teaching leads to renewed worship and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian. And amid today's emphasis on the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, The Forgotten Trinity is a balanced look at all three persons of the Trinity. May this book deepen your understanding of this important doctrine while also drawing you closer to the triune God himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book offer a rich sampling of current scholarship on New Netherland and Dutch colonization in North America. The Introduction explains why the Dutch moment in American history has been overlooked or trivialized and calls attention to signs of the emergence of a new narrative of American beginnings that gives due weight to the imprint of Dutch settlement in America. The essays are organized around six major themes: New Netherland and Historical Memory, New Netherland in the Atlantic World, The Political Economy of New Netherland, New Netherland’s Directors: A New Look, Family Research as a key to New Netherland’s History, and Writing the History of New Netherland in the Twenty-first Century. This volume holds great interest for historians of early America and of Dutch colonization. Contributors include: Willem Frijhoff, Charles Th. Gehring, Joyce D. Goodfriend, Firth Haring Fabend, Jaap Jacobs, Wim Klooster, Harry Macy, Jr., Dennis J. Maika, Simon Middleton, Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, Annette Stott, David William Voorhees, and Richard Waldron.

Book excerpt: This festival requires us to instruct the people in the dogma of the Holy Trinity, and to strengthen both memory and faith concerning it. This is the reason why we take up the subject once more. Without proper instruction and a sound foundation in this regard, other dogmas cannot be rightly and successfully treated. The other festivals of the year present the Lord God clothed in his works and miracles. For instance: on Christmas we celebrate his incarnation; on Easter his resurrection from the dead; on Whit-sunday the gift of the Holy Spirit and the establishment of the Christian Church. Thus all the other festivals present the Lord in the guise of a worker of one thing or another. But this Trinity Festival discloses him to us as he is in himself. Here we see him apart from whatever guise assumed, from whatever work done, solely in his divine essence. We must go beyond and above all reason, leaving behind the evidence of created things, and hear only God's own testimony concerning himself and his inner essence; otherwise we shall remain unenlightened.
